  • Subaru's bread and butter is all-wheel-drive (AWD) wagons, and this for the Impreza's 2024 redesign, the sedan is gone, leaving the wagon as the only option for the seventh generation of this compact. Subaru has also brought back the RS (rally sport) moniker to the Impreza, shoving their bigger 2.5L 4-cylinder BOXER engine under the hood for a bump in horsepower and torque. This guy makes 182-hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, and it's just enough to have some pretty solid fun. The RS is the enthusiast-focused trim, but the manual is notably absent from this and any other trim-level. Can this utilitarian Subaru actually provide some fun? Let's take a look.

    Apologies for the sound issues during the drive! What do you think about the return of the RS? Should it have had a manual?

    A good review! I see there is a small black button to the right of electronic parking brake, any idea what is it?

      Thank you! That's just a blank next to the brake. As far as I can tell, it's not used on the Impreza at all, so it must just be a shared trim piece with one of the other models.

    It's a 'good car'. I test drove one, and it was impressively quiet, handled very well, very good interior (IMO), but was slow, and the CVT wasn't helping with any fun. I wife tore me a new one for even considering an auto with 125hp less than my old car, and that I would be bored in a matter of months. When the dealer put up a photo of an older couple buying an RS, she made sure to point it out, and tell me it's for old people. A week later when I bought a 2023 WRX Premium, and was explaining how the RS got full screen Android Auto and the WRX doesn't, she quipped immediately that's because old people need the bigger screen. LOL. (p.s. I resolved this by using an AAWireless dongle and using Android Auto over Car Play functionality, until Subaru finally do an update).

      Ha, fair enough! There are some pretty badass older people driving CTRs and Blackwings and such, and I still think it'd be nice if the WRX had full screen AA, but I see where you're coming from ha. Yeah, I was impressed with the RS overall. Yeah, it's slow, but it's fast enough to have some fun as long as you can wring it out, but that's where the transmission becomes an issue. How are you liking the VB?

      You and your family need to get off the roads.

      @@cgmiddle really? I've never made an insurance claim for myself. I've been driving almost 30 years across multiple countries. Good luck with your keyboard warrior skill set.

      @@GearboxCarReviews VB is a good car. It is no STI (Which I had before it), but it gets the job done. The chassis has a lot of potential, as does the engine. Things that could be better 1) steering is too light, but accurate 2) suspension is too harsh. Needs refinement. 3) slider brakes suck for feel, definitely need go. uprate to at least 4 pots IMO.
      Engine is good, but get used to the low revs in first gear especially. I would advice uprating the pitch mount and maybe some transmission mounts to improve shift engagement.
      I'm liking the car more and more. I would put it as a tuners playground car. The 2024 adds chassis stiffness and the TR gets some nice bits, but I think the TR is over priced. It would be WELL worth the price if it had an STI trans IMO.

    i wanna see what happens when everything is electric , what will you manual fans complain about ...just get some other car if all you want is a gearbox ... i mean the rest of the car shouldn't matter , suv, truck , get that if you wanna row all day , Mazda has the mx whatever or the type r if you wanna , need 4wd get an older subi with a box if all you need is that .

      I get where you're coming from, but this video is about a specific car in a trim level that's marketed toward enthusiasts who generally prefer either a manual or a non-cvt automatic. And as I mentioned in the video, the car overall is great, that's just the one thing holding it back a little. It's not an "all I want is the gearbox" complaint here.

    • @npatricksmith
      @npatricksmith 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Except it's not marketed toward "enthusiasts". Only TH-camrs who are looking for something to complain about say it's for enthusiasts.

    • @GearboxCarReviews
      @GearboxCarReviews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Subaru refers to it as the "enthusiast-focused trim level" in their media materials.

    • @npatricksmith
      @npatricksmith 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can say that, but no one who this car is *marketed* toward gets media materials. If you look at the mainstream marketing of this trim (website, commercials, press releases, dealership literature), Subaru is not marketing this toward some vauge "enthusiast" demographic that TH-camrs want to please. (At least you didn't say "hot hatch")

    • @GearboxCarReviews
      @GearboxCarReviews  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @npatricksmith youtube and car publications are part of their marketing though. If Subaru gives a car to the media to test and the PR department gives out materials to the media that say it's enthusiast-oriented, that's not TH-camrs just saying it to complain, that's Subaru trying to market to enthusiasts.
