Doing whatcha gotta do to have a clean Chevy.
The 1963 Sacrifice! 3 Speed Donor.
Scrolling through Facebook market place one day and I came across a listing for 4 corvairs for sale. None of which has titles and were going to be crushed.. $400 each, I couldn't take a whole car, nor did I want to. So here is my corvair pull a part adventure! Ps: I thought I was getting a 4 speed but turns out I got the 3, still happy for what I payed!
Apologies for the video not coming out as well as I would have liked, I was in a rush. Didn't record as much as I thought I did, and couldn't return to the property to take out the glass and get a good video of the car. Enjoy!

Ow
Take a look at California Corvairs for pictures of the auto and standard cross members
Hey, if your changing your car to a 4 speed, you need the rear cross member. The standard transmission cross member has a cut out because its longer
Cool man, did you ever look into that short shifter I mentioned in your last video? How long have you been driving around with the new trans?
@@thisone. Yes I did, but I still have not worked on that engine and trans I pulled. I got another project I'll feature on the channel soon.
@@benbencorvair9071 Oh, so its not installed. I thought you were driving with the new trans at the end of your video. Cool, will wait for your new project.
That car is cleaner - less rust - than my 65, what a shame.
Sad that so many Corvairs are left to rot in the weeds. You should come the Lone Star Corvair Club meeting Oct the 12th in Round Rock.
@@redsgarage6472 Yes, lots of good classics out there rotting away. I'll mark that club meet on my calendar!
@@redsgarage6472 oh shoot that's tomorrow! Dang I've already made plans...
@@benbencorvair9071 meeting will just a couple hours during lunch.
So difficult to watch that Corvair get man-handled. Get it to Jeff at Corvair Ranch so the rest of it helps someone.
My first car was a 64 Corvair, so I love watching your videos. But seeing that that forklift manhandle the donor was painful -- like watching Grandpa fall down a flight of stairs and break his leg! Looking forward to you getting the new transmission in.
@@mediatransfers9927 Yes it hurt me to. But it was getting crushed either way.. it will live on when it's parts are in my corvair!
That rear glass is $700 new nowadays. Stainless trim...price is no object LOL. Did you remember the pedals and mounts for them?
@@Friedbrain11 Yup, my intentions were to go back and get the glass, but problems with property owner so couldn't.
Flipping it over was a waste of good body panels. Also, you should have grabbed that '64 rear leaf spring, they're worth good money to EM guys.
@@LN997-i8x I understand that but the deal I made was just for engine and trans stuff. Honestly did not think of resell value, I did leave that leaf spring there.
The one you flipped is a '60 or '61. Nowhere near a '64.
It's either a '62 with '63 front trim on it for some reason, or a '63 with '62 belt line trim. Definitely not a '60 or '61, judging by the master cylinder. Strangely, it also has '64 rear suspension.
Flipping it over, not cool
@@scottsullivan1464 I'm sure it's fine, these corvairs did great in roll overs! Haha seriously thought it was going to be crushed and didn't have a title. That's also the only way I could take the power train out.
@@benbencorvair9071 Do no harm
Didn't you overhaul the power glide for your Corvair or an I thinking of some one else? I kind of wish my '65 Monza convertible had a manual.
@@danr1920 Yes I did rebuild my powerglide, I've got the video on my channel. The powerglides are good when your already moving. But I want something that will make my tires chrip and makes my car feel more sporty!
Let me know if you still want a 4 speed transmission.
@@graffet Do the 4speed bolt on to any manual trans differential? I would really like that extra gear but with this little motor I have, I wouldn't get to enjoy it much I think. Plus someone made me feel better saying the 3 speed is more unique!
@@benbencorvair9071 you do have to have a differential to match 4 speeds, I can probably get you one of those too but its probably going to be a 3.55 ratio. The thing that kills the 3 speeds for most people is that the gears aren’t synchronous so you can’t use decompression from downshifting to stop in an emergency.
What’s the latest with the 3 speed swap?
@@robertsimmons1716 haha, unfortunately nothing. I picked up a new project that I've been spending lots of time on! I'll feature it on the channel eventually.
Nice move bowels .Should have bought the other trumpet set of duals. These soda straw peashooters aren't going to turn any heads that's for sure. Suck up your mistake sell 'em and buy the correct set.
@@mikeycee1947 🤣 "soda straw peashooters" I've actually grown to like them. Plus I don't want to be one of those guys thats got a loud exhaust on a slow car. Car turns heads as is, I don't need loud noises to get peoples attention.
Is that an Eelco/Cal Custom gas pedal ?? Love it !! Do you have the volume knob for the radio ?
@@ervinthompson6598 I'm nit sure of the brandz got the pedal and dimmer separate on ebay. I did find some radio knobs off a junk radio. Had to grind them down a bit to fit.
I have the rtobone style pipes sitting in my basement for the last 5 years. everyone I've talked to says they are way too loud and really drone. Was thinking about cutting the trombone tips welding harley mufflers which I have sitting i my father's garage . Reading the comments, I suspect the lower shrouds can be reinstalled after adding these?
@@paulschofield1531 That's sounds awesome, yes I was able to install my bottom shrouds with this set up.
Ha! "My back hurts." Corvairs are fun to work on, but bending over to their low engine placement does come at a price. 🤣
4:50 shows you not only took spark plugs out but the pushrod tubes too. I bet you were fighting the pushrod tubes the most as they are pressed in. I am in the middle of doing this to diagnose my low compression on 2 cylinders on the drivers side.
I've done many projects solo, and it can get frustrating with repeated steps, misplaced tools, improvising, etc. I can imagine that trying to film and narrate the work would be difficult. Thanks for the video, and I hope you enjoy that Corvair!
@@259Den3 What's difficult for me is trying to organize my thoughts and words so that it sounds good and well done for the video, as well as getting video clips that kinda flow. I feel like my videos can be unorganized or choppy. Thanks for your comment!
Maybe next Corvair you can get a stickshift and convert it to a five speed so you have low rpm’s at highway speeds.
@@davidkornblatt851 I would like to have a late model corvair! Maybe one day.
@@benbencorvair9071 you can really hop up the LM Corvair so it becomes a domestic911
I recommend Clark’s disc brakes because upon repeated stops less brake fade.
On drums I think you have brake shoes right?
If you need a 4 speed transmission I can hook you up, I know a guy who has tons of them laying around in a pos greenbrier.
@@graffet I'll keep that in mind! Thank you.
@@benbencorvair9071 he like helping us “new gens” so if you just pay for shipping and buy him a coffee I’ll get it shipped. They weigh about 70lbs and I’d ship it from Seattle WA. I can send you pictures of the insides and spin it too.
The other thing you can do is put the Mustang 2 front suspension and steering package on it so it could handle a little better.
See if you can get the ralleey spyder round gauges instead the plain old gauges.
@@davidkornblatt851 Yes!! That would be awesome.
Try "aviation form a gasket" let it sit on gasket surfaces for a couple of hours, gently tighten down, good as done. Works great on warped/uneven surfaces, turns paper-cork gaskets into a silicone-like surface. Aviation Form A Gasket never sets up fully, which makes it great for collant and oil mating surfaces; one important criteria have a good layer gasket surface while setting up, and do not overtighten area you want to be leak free
@@dmcnamara9859 Thank you! I'll definitely give it a try. I have since taken off the alternator/filter assembly and tried decking at again on a flat granite table. I got very flat but it only slowed the leak down. It may also have something to do with having to over size the bolt holes, maybe the holes are not exactly straight and there is binding causing slight warping once installed..
@@benbencorvair9071brush 1/16 inch ish layer of Aviation Form A Gasket on mating and gasket surfaces allow it to setup a couple hours prior to recommended torque spec. It won't leak any more if you follow that be patient procedure.
boy, that's sweet n sour, not ketchup haha lol
Old timer Chevy tech here with lots of Corvair experience, Nice work on dropping the entire powertrain. That is the proper way and great job on the trans rebuild! Did you replace the torque converter?
@@izzydizzy1115 Thank you! I wish a had a better rig to drop it but I made it work. I reused my torque converter.. should I have replaced it??
@@benbencorvair9071 Yes you should have since it's almost impossible to clean all the gunk out of the old converters. It might be wise to do a few transmission fluid exchanges going forward, just in case the new fluid gets contaminated. I enjoy your videos. Brings back a lot of good memories! Not all Chevy mechanics from that time period liked working on Corvairs. I personally did and owned several of them.
Im considering doing this to mine.its been over a year.are you still pleased? Was it worth the money? A lil over 600 now with shipping
@@melissajones-zv8cd if you have the time and skill to fabricate your own dual system with muffle and resonator (like these) it might be more cost effective building your own. @@benbencorvair9071 cool man, I just got this thing a couple days ago. Wow! This is going to be fun. A pancake motor. This is my first Corvair.
@@Edward-r5h3i good luck sir, I bought mine on a whim, sight unseen, from CA to TX. It has been a fun journey, and I have learned a shit ton in the process.
I had a 3 speed trans in my 62 corvair. That was the only thing I didn't like. After I sold it the new owner came to me with a 4 speed trans/axle assy to have installed. I did it and that made that car perfect. With the 3 speed there was way too much rpm drop. Shifting to 2nd made it rev too high, like when passing another car. Just my real world opinion.
@@meanmechanic9 I appreciate your opinion! It's still going to be a long while till I get around to installing it, maybe in that time I can source a 4 speed.
Well done, Ben. Just watched your video and I agree, the new mufflers sound great.
welcome back bud, looking foward to the new engine install
One of the most critical and tricky parts of this job is the installation. Too bad that you didn't show how you got the tank back in with the filler neck already attached. Skipping over how you did that made the video 50% useless. Shame shame.
Yeeaahhhhhhh 🎉
you need to do that with a vacuum gauge?
The tool I place on top of the carburetors is a uni-syn tool. Must have to make sure both carbs are synchronized and pulling equal vacuum.
I love Corvairs and it is good to see ya back. Getting it back to right is a test sometimes but worth it. I would recommend against the inertia switch as they are a problem unto themselves. An oil pressure switch is a better option. I wanted to put bumper guards on mine LOL. I would never drop a Corvair...not a wise idea.
@@Friedbrain11 I appreciate you sharing your opinion! I'll definitely look more into inertia switch vs oil pressure. If I like my car better without the guards I'll message you and we can work out a deal! A static drop would definitely kill the drivabilty, maybe I just do half inch? Or I win the lottery and those hydraulics on it! Haha!
👍👍👍👍👍 Awsome I’ll be watching
Oil leak? You mean rust prevention 😂. Glad to see an update from you.
Haha, you're not wrong!
Thanks for the update. You will definitely get more enjoyment with the manual transmission. Going back to my roots we just bought a '62 Spyder after years of vintage street rods / hot rods. My first car was a Corvair back in upstate NY. Moved to S.CA and picked up and raced Corvairs. Still have 55 Nomad,'74 D100,'15 cts-v but having a ton of fun with the Spyder. My '62 is the same color combination as yours Looking to find a LM Corvair w/auto for my wife now.
I hope I have the pleasure of driving a Spyder one day! Thanks for the comment!
Beautiful Corvair! I have a 62 coupe with the 102 engine and 3 speed transmission and I really like the 3-speed actually. For one thing, it makes the car a bit more interesting since you don’t tend to see 3-speeds as often. But also, the top gear in the 3 and 4 speed transmissions are the same ratio, so it’s just the distribution of gears that is different. I’ve heard that some prefer the 3-speed over the 4 for normal 95 and 102 hp engine use and that the 4-speed really only makes a big difference with the 140 hp and turbo engines. I’m currently working on getting my Corvair to run properly again and your videos have been helpful to me. Cheers
@@liamcoyne4708 Great to hear others options on the 3 speed and 4 speed! I read something similar on a forum. Either way I'm excited to make the swap, it will feel like a whole different car!
Have you driven a 4-speed 95hp to compare, or only the 3-speed?
@@jeremiahsummers8054 I’ve driven both, the 4-speed was in a Spyder turbo I went to look at. The 4-speed was nice when I was pushing the car hard but for normal driving, my 3-speed feels just as good. I love it though, I don’t feel like I’m missing that extra gear or anything.
Did you grab all the accessories for the trans swap? Shifter/cables/clutch pedal assembly/ that tube to shift the gears/ the throw out bearing assembly/pulleys and all that jazz? I recommend looking at the shirt shifter option Clarks sells. In my opinion Corvairs have a long throw shifter. I bought a parts car that had one and never looked back. Also make sure that diff is a true 64 diff for the rear sway bar bracket. I made the mistake of buying a 64 parts car that had a 63 diff when hunting down a manual swap.
@@thisone. Yes! I'm 98% sure I grabbed all the parts I needed for the swap! I'll look into short shifter kits, thanks for mentioning. The diff is a true 64 or at least had the provisions for the "leaf spring" I'll start working on a video where I pull the parts from that car!
@@benbencorvair9071 Also I tried the electric pump and that clicking noise drove me nuts. They have to be right near the tank in order to push the fuel and not pull fuel. So cant put it in the engine bay. At least thats what was only available when I tried. Good luck, car looks good. Makes me want to work on my 64 again. Its in pieces right now.
@@thisone. I've seen a pretty clean corvaur fuel pump install done on TH-cam, I don't remember if he complained of noise but I plan on copying that install. Fuel pump mounted next to tank.
Great looking car. I have a 64 Vert in the same color. You're definitely on the right track with the inner door plastic. That is exactly what the factory used. It would be sealed to the metal of the inner door with a noodle of "dum-dum". A modern equivalent would be "Duct Seal" for HVAC systems. The door fuzzies along the lower window line are great for anti-rattle, but they really don't make any attempt to keep water out. Also great to ensure all your drains are clear. This counts for the not only the front and rear windows, but also the grates along the cowl. If you spray water along the top of the window/cowl it should be verified that it's coming out the bottom. The cowl drains out a very large round hole on the underside of the fender behind tire. The area is very prone to filling with debris. The front windows drain out the bottom of the door. The back windows drain out through a round rubber "valve" in the floor into the sill where another rubber flapper in the backside of the sill allows it out. Of course if any of these are blocked then water is going to sit and rust along with evaporate in that Texas heat creating high humidity that will make any cardboard product swell and degrade. Really great to see you enjoying yours so much. Maybe look up a period window "swamp cooler" to give you some cool air. Thanks again.
@@darinwink-ou4qk Thanks for the advice! I think I've cleaned out the rear drain holes before, the door drains are clear and the cowl ones are also clear, I remember cleaning out the cowl drain and Sooo much dirt and leaves came out of there! I briefly looked into those classic style window swamp coolers, less expensive than AC kits but I think I'll end up installing an AC kit, that way I have cool air even if I'm sitting in traffic!

@@melissajones-zv8cd I wish I was met with a bigger engine and a 4 speed in the parts car I stripped. Oh well at least I'll have a fresh engine and manual transmission!
Hey BenBen! Sounds like You have allot of plans for the 64; I was kind of worried at the beginning of the video you sounded a little discouraged, & sounded like you were ready to throw in the towel. Well speaking for myself it took me 7 years to get my 65 Corsa turbo done, & I had a few set backs along the way, But I did see it through. My only regret is I've taken on some other projects that have taken away time on my 3 Corvair's like 1959 M-F 50 tractor which I want to do a repaint on as well put in some new gauges. Every thing else is done on it the only problem is it's a working tractor so I have to wait till the right time when it's not in use to finish it. Then there's my 1999 C3500 dump truck that I use year around which only has 53,000 miles on the clock, & I don't use it this time of year because the A/C doesn't work, But I just ordered a new compressor with a clutch for it which will be here next Monday so I'll be putting that in. I have a 07 Trailblazer that needs a few things done to it before I sell it with only 72,000 on the clock, & a 08 Cobalt Sport Coupe that I'm going to put for sell as well with 83,000 on the clock, & Ill be putting some new tire's on this month, But I'm going to hold on to it a little longer because it's very fun to drive, & is very reliable. Long story short I'm retired but you can still only get so much done at a time; So I hope next year to be focusing on the 3 Corvair's, & one of those is going to be put up for sale. Thanks for the update, & I'll be looking forward to your next video; Oh by the way have you given a name for your 64? Take it easy.
@@ACF6180T I've stumbled across some project cars on FB marketplace that I was close to going out to look at, but I lack the space for another project! You sure have a lot to work on with yours haha. I have not named my car and don't think i will. Thanks for the comment!
@@benbencorvair9071 Yeah; I had 3 Corvair's when I moved here 28 years ago then I bought the 67 Convertible, & sold the 60 700 because I needed more room. I also bought a new tractor in 2018 so I have two tractors now; I just like to have back up on some things. I still want to get a 65 or 67 Monza Sport sedan someday, But that would mean letting go of another Corvair?
