  • Sorta fixed it, sorta didn't. Stick around to find out if I did a terrible job or not :)
(Update, later fixed this problem property by sanding the unit down to flatten mating surfaces)

I have owned 3 Corvairs since 1963. I had a new 1963, 1965 and 1969. Every Corvair will leak oil because of horizontal engine construction. The rocker arm covers leak because they can not seal tight enough to the rubber or cork gaskets due to the aluminum engine block expanding and contracting from engine temperature. They will always have some leakage at or around the rocker arm covers.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, currently have one side rocker arm cover sealed well with the blue silicone gasket (not gasket maker) straightening other side as that's the one I'm having leakage from. Thank you.

I had a 65 Monza convertible in 67. I also had a 50 mile long paper route. It finally came down to when going out in the morning, first thing I did was pour in a quart of oil. Wait and then check the oil. The seals were notorious for leaking.

I use 180 sand paper on a piece of glass to flattened that surface works perfect

I might give that a try if the leak gets worse, for now I'm okay with it.

Hey there. TY for video. I have 65 Corvair. No oil leak... rode roughly 1 hour. Parked overnight. Went take it out next day and I have large oil leak now. Checked plug, filter, connectors, and now thinking gasket. Aside from taking apart to replace gasket you have any ideas/ recommend?
    TY

When I took mine apart for a second time, I got some light grit sandpaper wrapped around a block of wood and plained the surface down.

Corvairs are notorious oil leakers. The oil leaks around the rocker arm covers. They can not seal properly because of the horizontal construction of the engine allows oil to settle at the bottom of the rocker arm covers. Replacement of gaskets will not help as the engine expands and contracts with engine temp.

You do NOT use sealer with this type of gasket
    It will cause leaks
    Good luck.

Once you have the alternator bracket out (the first time) that's the time to sand it down or spend $40 on a new one. Why do it half ass and then wonder if you should do it again or put up with less of a problem. Do it right the first time and close the chapter on this. Then Get to work on something else

@@benbencorvair9071 my experience with the alternator bracket is when I rebuilt the engine (under a friends guidance) and it was leaking at the oil pressure sender. I tried to wrap thread tape around it several times and still leaking. I ended up overtightening it. It’s cone shaped. It cracked the bracket in such a way that oil was spurring Luke a drinking water fountain right into the fan, thus getting my brand new clean engine completely caked in the dirty oil that had been used to break it in...ugh

when doing this work you will find out that a long file is your best friend. You will use it everywhere. Especially at the carb bases and where your doing your repair. And yes it was way too thick, where do you think that extra crap is going to go inside of your engine. lets hope it don't squeeze through the oil ports and plug up your crank bearings holes.

@@benbencorvair9071 There will be oil leaks from the valve covers as the cork or rubber gaskets can not seal tight because of the expansion and contraction of the horizontal aluminum engine design,. Oil leaks around the valve covers is just a common quirk of this vehicle. I've owned new 1963, 1965 and 1969 corvairs. Had the same oil leaks.
