Third Time Lucky - remote camping and panoramic film photography in Girraween National Park
Hello my friends,
Welcome back to the channel!
I was super stoked to make this video. It is another trip to Girraween National Park, but I am attempting to shoot a particular subject for the third time!
The first two attempts were unsuccessful, so fingers crossed for third time lucky!
I hiked in and set up camp at a lovely spot by the creek, and then set off for my photo.
My goal was to photograph Mt Norman with black and white Infrared film with different colour filters on the lens, and then stack the scans together in Photoshop to create a faux Aerochrome style image.
Mt Norman is the highest peak in Girraween, so I feel like it deserving of a good photo!
I really hope you enjoy this short film. I was very keen to make it, and very much enjoyed the process, and my solo time in Girraween!
If you did enjoy it, please let me know in the comments, and give it a like!
I'd also really love it if you'd subscribe to the channel, if you haven't already!
Thank you again, and see you soon!

Hello my friends, and welcome back to the channel! I know it has been some time since I posted last, but I am back. In this video, my wonderful wife, Leah, and I got away for a weekend on our own. So what do I do? Bring the Hasselblad! I got up early one morning and just wondered down near the beach at the resort with the Hasselblad and shot some Kodak! There wasn't any sky interest (clouds) fo...

@@MeasuredLight you can drive so far up then basically on hands and knees but not rock climbing stuff. You could easily carry a back pack to the top. The tracks are old timber cutting tracks we camp near them then walked, climb to the top. On peaks crossing side is almost a shear cliff down. Best way to get there is Wyatt Rd near flagstone then turn right at the end of the road and just keep left on the road through a couple of gates till you get to the top. If you go right on the track you’ll end up at Peaks crossing and a sealed Rd.

Thanks for watching, Craig. Mostly I shoot one frame and move on. If the conditions are tricky to meter, I will sometimes bracket, though. In this one I shot the same scene twice due to the changing light as the sun rose :)

@MeasuredLight thank you, I have the GX617 and find myself bracketing and using a whole roll on a single scene as I can't use the focusing ground glass for another scene. I am still getting my head around the hyperfocus scale to be able to get pin sharp images without the ground glass.

@3goldfinger Thanks for watching! The average cost of developing and getting scans is about $30 per roll. Cost of purchasing fresh colour film is often $20-30 per roll. And B&W is probably about $15. I'm hoping to get back into developing B&W at home again soon.

I must admit I like the Mamiya lenses better than using the Hasselblad. They are just a bit easier to use on the GFX. I also have the Olympus PenF and my 12-40mm 2.8 Pro lens pretty much lives on it. It is my go to camera for grab shots and street photography.

I more or less only use the 17mm and 45mm F/1.8 lenses on the Pen. E-M1 MkII with 12-40mm F/2.8 pro is what I use every day for work though. The Pen-F is truly a lovely little camera!!

Very informative!!...whats causing the strange patterns in the fore grounds at the 7.05min mark? ...or is it just my monitor?

      @MeasuredLight 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Nah, not your monitor. I edit videos with Premiere Rush, and it seems really bad at images with pushed shadows. That file was pushed a lot in post to try and get close to the GFX haha

Hey, enjoyed this video! What tripod are you using?

Hey Ian, thanks for watching!! I actually really enjoyed shooting these photos, even though it isn't what I usually shoot! The tripod was a Neewer one. I can't remember the exact model, though, as I no longer have it. The legs were pretty good, but I really didn't like the head.

Just the video im looking for. Currently in the process of selling my hasselblad for a mamiya 6 and shoot some panoramic with it. From the few times i used ektar, its surprised me with how well it does with landscape so i definitely enjoy this vid and got idea of what to expect! thanks, it was an enjoyable video!

Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😀 Ektar is definitely my most used film stock! Beautiful saturation and contrast for landscape shooting, and next to no grain when exposed well.

May I know which brand or model of your shuttle release cable? Any recommendations? I just got the same camera and considering to get a release cable. Thx.

Hi Angela, thank ls for watching 🙂 I would definitely recommend a shutter release cable for this camera. I'm afraid I don't know the make. It's one I got given without any packaging. But I do know the Gepe brand ones are very good.

Working with the 617 panorama format, requires an understanding of when the pano image works, however, that said, rules are made to be broken, I have had some amazing/unexpected results over the years, by breaking the rules, but always had beyond stunning landscape results by sticking the the F617 rules. Fuji provided a centre filter for the WA lens for good reason, it is necessary for even exposure on film, unfortunately a lot of the few cameras floating around, don't have them, due to owners/new users, who are clueless, however, a certain amount of adjustment can be had in post. One also needs to keep the camera clean, not in the dusty condition, the one in the clip is in. The main reason for this, is because dust is your enemy, when it comes to scanning. Your choice of film/filters is also very significant for the 617 format, especially if you want to do landscape photography/get the tonality/quality the camera is capable of. The Fuji centre filter acts as a handy underexposure control for positives (best film for the format, but requires more technical ability) of course you can adjust up a bit for negatives. Filter factors need to be checked, if you're shooting as fuji's engineers intended. Anybody contemplating working with this camera, needs a different working MO than used with DSLR, A slower, more methodical/contemplative approach, that is common in large format photography, is the ticket. I recommend ND grads by Lee or above but not Cokin, due to CC. Line up the filter/use BT to hold it in place. I use a Hasselblad flextight to scan 617, in truth the flextight/fuji 617 have become exclusive friends over the years. Good luck to anybody with the Fuji 617, if you learn how to get the best out of the camera, you will never part with it, that said, 80% of owners typically sell them/move on, because they are an expensive one trick pony, but what a trick it is! The Fuji 617 (all versions) is a very special camera for people with special vision/photographic skills.
