What Makes A Good Remake?
Remakes come in all shapes and sizes, and the qualities that come together to make a good remake are far from standard. In an attempt to be pseudo-intellectual, today we're gonna dissect some recent remakes to highlight the 3 main categories of them, alongside what makes each of them tick.

Why Don't We Ever Finish Video Games?
มุมมอง 4.4K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
As gamers, we have an expectation, no, a DESTINY... to waste as much money as possible. Games cost a lot, yet we still feel the overwhelming desire to needlessly hoard unplayed titles. Is it FOMO? The need to fill a shelf with more plastic? I don't know, but let's break it down a bit.
The Game That Shaped Final Fantasy (And Why Nobody Talks About It)
มุมมอง 3.1K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Final Fantasy III is a game that has eluded me my entire life. With a handful of memories with the DS version I never connected with, it sits in the back of my mind, gnawing at my brain stem and decimating my parietal lobe. Oh well! I've always wondered though, is there a reason as to why so few people seem to have really dug into the game? While there are obvious answers to that extremely stup...
There Will Never Be Another Game Like Final Fantasy 7 Remake
มุมมอง 33K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Every so often, a game comes along and challenges what it means to be something. In FF7R's case, it redefined what it means to be a remake, presenting an uncomparable expansion on the original FF7 story. But this game is special for many reasons, some of which I've struggled for a long time to put into words. In the process of sorting my thoughts I came to the realization that: A) I'm deeply me...
Ranting About Disc Art for 7 Minutes

I swear this video didn't take me 2 months to make. I got very busy! Jeez! Get off my back! And while I get my creative flow back on track with a more complete and creatively horrifying project, have this! A topic that I'm... strangely passionate.
The Beauty of Video Game Artbooks
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
For many, video games are an integral part of life. They define your interests, your free time and even your personality. I think it goes without saying that I absolutely fall into that group, and my favorite way to cap off a game I have a connection to is searching high and low, spending more money than I have on an art book so I can brag about it to other people. Having a superiority complex ...
Why I LOVE Star Ocean First Departure
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
I've played a lot of games in my day. You could even say unlimited games! But I won't reference that, no I will not. Star Ocean is a series that has consistently remained one of my favorites since early child, playing a part in each period of my life. It's time to take a step back and pull them apart, starting with First Departure; a game that took me years to figure out why I loved it so much....
Pseudoregalia: the BEST Indie Metroidvania
มุมมอง 3.1Kปีที่แล้ว
Despite my uncharacteristically large library of games, I tend to primarily to stick to playing RPGs. That doesn't mean I don't like to branch out though, and when a little indie game caught my eye on Steam I decided it was time for a short little palette cleanser to my normally 60 hour grindfests. Little did I know it would teach me something deeply meaningful; not only do I think rabbit-cat-g...
Klonoa: The Greatest Platformer Duology Ever Made
มุมมอง 3.1Kปีที่แล้ว
Klonoa is a franchise that defines cult status. Loved by many but known by few, I figured it's about time I abuse my status as a dictator and force its existence down some throats. With a PS1 classic and a PS2 masterpiece under its belt, (alongside one of the Wii games ever made) Klonoa stands tall as one of the best duologies in video games. Whether you like what you see or not, leave a commen...

The Street Fighter 6 Experience
มุมมอง 771ปีที่แล้ว
Fighting games have always been a genre I play a fancy dance with. Having dipped my toes into arena fighters and tiptoed along the edge of Mortal Kombat, I never felt confident enough to dive headfirst into the Street Fighter lifestyle. That changes today. Street Fighter 6 is my first true, technical fighting game and I've chosen to chronicle the modest beginnings in the form of a stroke in the...
Why Final Fantasy 16's Prologue is AMAZING
มุมมอง 13Kปีที่แล้ว
A few days ago we finally got our hands on Final Fantasy 16 and the fan response has been pretty insane. With less than a week until launch, I wanted to take a minute and reflect on the beginning of the adventure this demo showed off, and why I think it's one of the best opening acts to a game I've ever played. Share your thoughts on the demo in the comments! That is an order from Supreme Leader.
The IMPACT of Battle Music
มุมมอง 2.4Kปีที่แล้ว
Music is an important part of any game, but battle themes exist in a different part of our brains. For many experiences they're the first songs that come to mind, defining how we remember the gameplay. An impactful battle theme is crafted in many ways, so today I simultaneously have a stroke and give some good examples. Don't call the ambulance. I am FINE! Video Credits: Dragon Quest 8 - Magema...
The Amazing Charm of Superstar Saga

You so handsome Also I hope you mentioned Suikoden 1 when it comes to bad box art
The one thing i hated about first departure the absolute most was when i played the game i ended up taking the 💩characters on my team in succession. I forgot the name of the dude who u first meet in the new area thats how bad he is, i beat his ass so easily and i never used him the whole game. I also didnt get the girl with the rabbit that lets you bypass the random encounters. If i got her i might have loved the game. I also didnt get the girl from the crystal i just kept picking up the worst of worst characters i could pick
Love the persona 4 (an actually good game) battle music at the start
I personally loved remake. Maybe even more than rebirth
I had to look at the date. For a second I thought this was an April Fools video. That game is great. Deep and emotional, with a great sound track.
genshin is neither japanese nor an rpg, what are you even talking about dude
Did we need to scream....
Yeah
Play 1 for a quick and easy entry. Follow up with 4 for great combat and to feel the connection to the first game as a prequel when humans set for the starts a la star trek. Play 2 to really cement yourself in the series. Play 6 next, and then 5. Absolutely play 5 before 3, it will feel like such an improvement in the combat system, and chronologically, 3 is the last in the series.
Xenogears disc 1 was one of the best jrpgs then disc 2 happened
i actually like the lack of boss fights because i don't combat being the focus thing
You can throw your sword, then kick it in the air to use it as a ranged weapon. Tricky, but worth it and does a crap ton of damage
Opening with Grandia reminded me that I didn’t finish Grandia 2 or Grandia 3… (To my defense, I soft-locked Grandia 2 and Grandia 3 has a brutal uptick in difficulty, especially for a middle schooler)
Kinda weird how ProJared never made a series retrospective of the games. Also, I see you did the whole game in the Game Boy game; so why didn't you play the remake on Game Boy Advance?
17:35 AHA AHAHAHAHAHA (screams & psyholaugh)
Me watching this while stationed in Germany and getting called out for being a military man
Are you using music from Y's Book?
Were you a space hamster fan
Bravely Default's 4x Boss Gauntlet thing pretty much turned me off from the rest of the series. Not sure if any of the others are actually any good or not: I refuse to play them after what the first one did.
Genshin Impact is not a JRPG, game is from China
Ok cool now do final fantasy R
Star Ocean for PS games 1-5 1 Never played 2. For P.S.2 I like it. Liking the remake of number 2 3 was okay got stuck halfway through. 4 was garbage 5 was okay
I’ll play anything tri-ace puts out in hopes of radiata stories 2
Valid
TEOT brought a lot of us in and has almost an unlimited play time.
I LOVED Tales of Arise, but I had to quit after the part where you take the Starship. It got SOOO boring.
The fact that this video ended with a “the pizzas here” truly shows how there is no game like final fantaky,
Sumo? 😂😂
dunno what you talking about. midgar tutorial and multiverse crap. game is crap stupid.
Hmm
Tails of arise combat great microtransactions suck in my God. The story and characters are awful. Specifically, rinwell pissed me off the most that last part of the game where they try to give her an arc Oh my fucking god there was no ark and he just was acting like an idiot. I was extra salty because it was a real whiplash coming off of Xenoblade 3. Just before
Great video! The one thing when it comes to the Secret of Mana remake that I wish more people were aware of is how it straight up uses assets from the Adventure of Mana remake that Square-Enix did on mobile and Vita. Granted, not everyone is aware of it's existence and I do wish that it would've been released on more platforms solely so more people would know a out it, but setting that aside, I played through most of the Secret of Mana remake (got to the final dungeon and had to stop cause I had a medical emergency and never got a chance to go back to finish the game). And I 100% agree with all of the complaints people have about it. When you compare it to the Trials of Mana remake, THAT is what we should have gotten instead of a lazy attempt at a remake. I personally don't have an issue with it being more one to one in terms of how they remade Secret of Mana, I just wanted it to be better than what it turned out to be.
Sadly you can never experience the fact that there was nothing out there like this.. it was new and AMAZING... we had FF for Nes but this was the 1st for Gameboy and it was AWESOME!!!
damn there are some unexpected title/franchise in here 😅, made me want to try them out see if i will have the same opinion as you. Great video!
I didnt think it was that bad. Like yeah its not amazing or anything but it was fun for a gameboy game. Also I love the music in this game lol
This game really set the stage for Link's Awakening and the Oracle Games; as well as setting a solid precedent of story/plot before the golden quad of SMRPG/FF VI/CTrig/Earthbound hit. Granted, it looks rough TODAY; but it was an experience in it's time. I'd always wished they'd make an NES port of this.
Edge Maverick is the Jesus of Star Ocean.
I like Remakes of FFVII, but i still hope that someday, Square would wanted to milk it more and they would create True Remake, and all fans, normies will be pleased and Square as well. They could do that, cuz it's VII
I also know the twist of till the end of time... And I don't know how I feel about it...
The Gold Standard for remakes will always be The first Resident Evil remake for me. Created not because of a cash grab and or/creative bankrupt motive rooted in today's nostalgia industry, but because in the span of 6 years the hardware advanced so much that a game made with so much compromises of the early 3D hardware of PS1 could be remade to be movie-like with deeper mechanics, the entire content of the original game, and new content added at the right spots in the history. The same director created the game he wanted originally, which made it possible to respect and improve the original's vision, artstyle and overall vibe while not being a carbon copy. The remakes of today are money hungry reimaginings or quasi carbon copies (because muh censorship for modern audiences are the only differences). The industry completly lost its "sauce" and muddied the concept of Remake, perfectly executed by Capcom in 2002, to be basically the same thing in the movie industry. A cashgrab directed at people with low attention spans and with no respect to the original or interesting and substantial new ideas.
after finishing ff7r, i stoped buying squaresoft games. the story changes are some modern multiverse bs. dont think they are capable on writing good storys. just some nice nostalgia graphics and boring filler sidequests. as far as i know it got only worse in rebirth. good for people who liked it. i think they have no taste.
Kirby super star ultra is the best remake of a video game I've seen
I considered using that as an example. top tier
People who bash FF13 only do so because they are too unintelligent to understand it
One of my favourite games of all time (Dead rising, which is made by capcom) recently got announced that it’ll be getting a “deluxe remaster” and it had me thinking about what makes a good remake as it it’s being labeled as a remaster? But it clearly feels like a remake and I came across this video. It was a good watch
I have to say Crash and Spyro look accurately as they were from their original trilogies. Toys for Bob made it possible.
I think hd-2d remakes completely misses the point of how to remake a 2d game.
As soon as you said 9 > 7, I knew I could never subscribe to you.
okay!
Live A Live ❤
So true
Living in germany I actually had the Daddy Nier Version and thought for a looooong while I played the one and only version. Was great, though. Except for the throphy material grinding. Never play the Replicant version. Was it really that different? Just thought you play Bro instead of daddy.
There are a lot of minor changes to the combat, movement, stuff like that. Overall improvements to the flow
Frankly the idea of remakes for any creative endeavour is, to put it crudely, creatively bankrupt. Don't get me wrong I have thoroughly enjoyed many remakes like Resident Evil 2 but outside of accessibility I struggle to see the creative value of remakes OVER making something new. (I obviously see the monetary value though) But even when it comes to the standpoint of technical limitations, that argument doesn't really hold up as for one the final work is a product of its time and limitations, it's a part of its identity and you will never be able to please every original fan for any remake. Almost every developer was not even considering certain technologies of today to implement in their work in the past. For example it's not a technical limitation for OG FF7 to not have voice acting, that wasn't even a consideration. You really don't see this almost disrespect to the history of a medium outside of videogames. No ones telling anyone to wait for a remake for a film, book or anime they'll just tell you to experience it now. I loved playing FF7 Rebirth and it's currently my GOTY but I can't help but lament that this could of just been a new game instead.
Rebirth, my favorite game of all time for all the ambitious things it did right.
