Just a couple of corrections. The character designer for SO2R is not Akiman but Yukihiro Kajimoto who worked on SOA and SO6. This remake was developed by Gemdrops and not tri-Ace. But I heard that Gemdrops had former tri-Ace staff who actually worked on the original SO2. They likely know the game's system well enough. Square Enix probably had to outsource to them since tri-Ace was working on SO6. Other than that your video was spot on.
i will tell you a story about my first time playing the first one on the snes. its early 2k, they finally were able to make emulators use the snes chip that megaman x2 and 3, but also start ocean and tales of phantasia had, and i decided to give it a try. i go in, collect a few party members, go through my adventure, until i get to a city(dont remember which), i separate my party as i usually did... and then one of the party members comes to me and asks for some money. i just thought it was interesting so i lended it to him (also dont remember how much, but i think it wasnt alot). go through the city, see some of those party members doing random things, and even see that member in a table, i talk to him and he responds something like "today is my lucky day". i found it funny and continued, flash foward to me leaving the city, all members come back... and there comes the guy. he turns to me and says "thanks, here, i got lucky today". and no joke, the dude gives me around 10-20 pieces of equipment, from multiple swords, armor pieces, and other weapons. i even went back to check, and some of them were far more expensive to sell than the amount he asked me for. just so you know, that event is random, and that party member is one of the choices you might not pick. so whenever i saw people talk about how amazing mass effect was, how much of an rpg, with great party members and all that, i could help but chuckle, as NOTHING in that entire franchise will ever come to surpass that experience that the first star ocean gave me.
I was lucky enough to have been gifted a physical copy of Star Ocean 2 for the PS1 by my dad. It was one of my favorite games of all time and a cherished part of my collection. I can't wait to play the new game!

star ocean 2 was the 1st RPG i played in the PS1 and the first that I completed. I still remember countless hours levelling up the characters to the point that the healers and the magic casters can defeat the mobs in the final stage without casting spells. Rena was really good with fistfights. I like seeing her jump and punch the huge eagle/falcon mob. I agree that disc 2 was a huge jump in difficulty. I think I grinded in the mountain where Ashton can be recruited so that my Celine has Lunar Light and Clause has a good proficiency for Ripper Blast before I even attempted to complete the 1st disc.
cool to see another strocean nerd. I personally really love the insanity of 4 the most and 6 was pretty good imho. I'm looking forward to seeing more from the remake. Oh and resonance of fate is king if anyone hasn't played it.. give it a shot!
I have every version of this game tbh since it came out originally when I was about 9 and I loved second story since then. The current psp port of it on ps4 and only being in the JPN region didn’t give me much hope for a remake. Now finally I will keep this game alive for my kids and 100% this new remake!!!
I’ll be honest, seeing the announcement of this be released and how incredible it looks got me emotional. Star Ocean The Second Story is the first game I ever bought with my own money along with Legend of Mana. I still have my original version and backup that get played to this day. This remake looks so good and has me express with the possibilities of what it could bring to the series. I’ve tried to avoid seeing too much of it so that I can get reintroduced as an adult.

After playing the demo twice I'm super hyped. Honestly playing the second story was rough for me I didn't grow up with it. Played it as a 23 year old. But this remake fixed the majority of the issues I had with it and I truly believe this is gonna be amazing.

SO6 is my favorite i’ve played so far (I’ve finiahed 1R, 5 and 6 and I was about 18 hours into the PSP version of 2). I preordered 2R so quickly, I’m almost certain it’ll be solid. It looks so good 👌🏻
Star Ocean The Second Story was by far the BEST game I ever played on PS1. I am more excited than I could express in words for the remake. I'm really hoping it doesn't disappoint.
star ocean 2 is peak gaming for me. i play it once every year (without following guides) so i can get different experience everytime i play it. i probably still missed many things but thats the best part of this game. this is my favorite game which defines my childhood and made me love JRPGs. i hope they don't F this up.
I hope the next star ocean game has optional characters again, it gives the game a lot of replayability and I like feeling like my team is unique to me
The Divine Force was def a good compromise between giving a bit of plauer choice but still having a full party that contributed to the plot. But i agree, maybe two or 3 optional slots
I do recall that at the end of the PS1 version you had an option of making the final boss even harder. I wonder if they'll add that to this version as well. You get another thing but it might be a spoiler so I'll just keep it to myself.
I remember the first time I played SO2 on PS1 I had no memory card. I made it all the way to the second planet and then got stuck behind a chair soft-locking the game. I simply restarted and did it all again, best game ever. I actually purchased a memory card mid-way through my second run (I left the game on overnight multiple times lmao).
Pre-ordered my copy. Played the demo for 2 hours, and 56 minutes (only allowed for 3 hours). The Octopath Traveler art style is an upgrade and it has the original music as an option as well. Camt wait till it comes out. Better beat Tears of the Kindom first though. Although I'm working on Star Ocean the First Encounter R now...
After playing the demo I can say that this will definitely hold up to what’s being shown in the trailers and gameplay. I enjoyed the changes they’ve made in comparison to the original and PSP version. It was fun for sure and the difficulty isn’t too hard nor is it too easy. Looking forward to this 🔥💯

SO has been on my radar forever but it's been prioritised ever since I saw your first video about the series, I bought all the available PS4 games about two years ago in a sale and also picked up a physical copy of The Divine Force back in May but haven't touched any of them yet. When I saw this remake at the direct I figured you'd probably be talking about it. I don't know anything outside of what your videos have told me about the game, but I think it'll be a good remake and I'll probably be buying it (not just because of my JRPG buying problem). Also I'd definitely be down to see more Star Ocean content!

honestly i'm looking forward to this remake good or bad since SO2 is ahead of only SO5 in my opinion quality wise but that is informed almost exclusively from looking back on mechanics and game design without context of playing it since i barely remember my original playthrough of the game around when it first came out (though i liked it enough to be exited for SO3 when it came out) and any attempt to go back is stunted by the lengthy unskippable story section the game starts with (1-2 hours of dialogue boxes with only one all but scripted fight is a bit of a turn off when your only there for the gameplay) so the changes to deepen the combat they seem to be trying and the gorgeous visuals alone have me sold.
Idk about Integrity and faithlessness being a big seller considering Tri Ace announced that they were insolvent a few weeks before The Divine Force came out.
The closure of Anamnesis would most likely have been the larger culprit in their financial losses. I also never said that IaF was a 'big seller', just that its underperformance was overblown when compared to the the estimated sales numbers. However I do wish we had been given more concrete numbers in that regard.
7:25 Can bug out? It's always uncompletable without cheats, because there's some soundclips you are not able to hear in a normal playthrough. Leon and Dias have voice clips for each other, even though you can't ever have them in the party at the same time. (I guess probably some kind of proof that making them route-exclusive was a later decision) Also I don't think the combat changes to Second Evolution were all imbalanced, they did serve to make some previously bad characters much more usable. Except Noel. Poor Noel. :(

I've been playing the 3 hour demo and just got to the kingdom of Krosse and I know I'm going to buy a physical copy of the game. I do own the PS1 original but never did defeat the end boss so this Switch version will tide me over til they finally release the Suikoden games and the spirital successor one.
Not to keen on the new environment and the lighting looks like it needs to be adjusted for the sprites to blend in better. Now the gameplay gets me curious since the magic looks like its casted in real tme with no delay in cast and that chages everything for better and worse for so many bosses. I feel like it will be a good remake
This is my favorite jrpg I've ever played. I am stoked for 11.2 and buying a pc just to play it (I don't have one at all yet) the sneak peaks look amazing
As long as they make "Nimble Fingers" an easy skill to get at the beginning. I threw and smashed my PS1 in frustration when I had to keep restarting the game to get it. :)
About that IRC Claude/Rena have around a 50% chance to start with it Rena's game at the start has LESS Dialogue before you can check for Nimble Fingers Claude takes longer to check to see if you have that Talent or not.
I have copies of this game for PS1 (don't ask) and it's the only star ocean game I haven't played. Someone needs to slap it on a disc so it can sit in the collection
One of my favorite JRPGS EVER has to be Valkyrie Profile, I played and re-played that game when I was like 13, remember using a guide and realizing that to unlock everything in the Seraphic Gate I had to play on hard mode, at first I was annoyed, but then I discovered NEW FUCKING DUNGEONS AND STORIES EXCLUSIVE TO HARD MODE!, that blew my fucking mind, getting the true ending and all the Flame Jewels to unlock all the boss party members and their best weapons post game has to be one of most accomplishing things I have ever done in a video game, I kinda skipped the PS2 but got an Xbox 360 when I was like 17, imagine my shock when In a magazine, there was an article about Star Ocean 4, and they describe how the same people behind VP made the game, and how rad the combat system was, I had to play it, and I really liked the combat system, but the story and most of the character interactions were pure agonizing CRINGE..... I seriously don't remember much of the story beyond the Elf guy with a rapier getting possessed and turning evil at the end of the game, needless to say, after completing the game, I didn't even bother with the post game and moved on, never touched another SO game, until now, on a whim I bought the remake after watching the Nintendo Direct, cause' the game kinda had the Octopath style, and my god SO2 blew me away similarly as VP did, played for a while and after getting familiar with the mechanics and systems and missing several PA's I decided to re-start the game, in universe difficulty, had some of the most fun with a JRPG since, a very long time, also, kinda had a nerdgasm when I reached the maze of tribulations and Mission to Deep space started to play!! And when you actually had to Fight Gabriel Celeste and you can even get Valkyrie's armor set!, I'm also proud I only had to cheese the Queen Iseria fight and the Planeteer Sword fun city challenge, once I have more time on my hands I will be playing SO3 and SO1, TL;DR this remake literally gave that ratatouille flashback the jaded critic got, and made me want to play more games like it.
That will more then 2 skills at once won't happen without the Worthless Link Combo accessory you get 1 of those off of Leon before entering the Hoffman ruins and ANOTHER ONLY on the Cave of Trials 2nd floor chest but its still worthless.
SO2 was my first in the series and by far my favourite. I picked it up on PS1 knowing nothing about it except that it was a JRPG and I was starving for those after having fallen in love with Final Fantasy on PS1. It turned out to be an amazing experience and next to FFVII the best game on the platform IMO. Looking forward to this.
I pre ordered the PS5 and the Switch edition, looking at possibly preordering the collectors edition but not sure if I want to pay the $199 they want for it.
You're talking about stuff being brought from Second Evolution? I can't believe you didn't mention it as it's obvious to me, but the script and voice acting is 100% recycled from Second Evolution, at least if you choose English (as that version not only had much better voice acting, but also covered the main story and not just battles and menus). Japan has two casts to pick from - the original SS cast with a full recording, and a new cast just for this version. I like the art direction with the remake, but I have to be honest; I'll miss the anime cutscenes added in SE. They were beautiful to watch even at 272p. BTW, FD was my first foray into the series (picked it up when it first released), while SE....gosh, that had to have been my most played PSP game of all time. It certainly is one of my favorites. I must've played it like 30 times, filled up all available save slots (if you can believe it), and even with different party combinations including nobody but the protagonists. Yeah, I beat all 3 superbosses with JUST the protagonists in my party, no one else ever recruited. (Though I had to abuse the UMD ejection trick to do so in order to stop spells from going off, so...both of my UMDs are literally broken and unusable now lol)
I just can’t believe we’re only 3 months away and we still don’t have anything other than the original launch trailer. I need to know graphics/framerate/load times differences between ps5 and switch so I know which version to preorder since stores likely won’t get any copies of this unless you reserve it.
The problem with having 80 different endings is playing the game 80 times is a killer, also playing it multiple times to get a specific set of characters was sad. I wanted to get everyone in both playthroughs and let me choose who to have in battle and swap them out if they died during the battle too. Since you can only get Dias with Rena's playthrough he's the strongest character in the game when you max him at 255 he gets hidden bonus to all physical attributes and has skills that can cheap kill massive enemies. Then the other problem is if you pick Celine you won't be able to choose this specific character can't remember, but Celine is a must and so is Dias. You can have them both in the party with Rena's data, but you lose someone else during the travels, depending on who you choose. I've always hated that about Star ocean games.
You either get Celine or Ashton, the boy with the dragons on his back. Funny enough if you pick Rena in the beginning. You can stun lock enemies with Claude, Ashton and Dias ult combo moves. At high levels and skill grinding I locked the final boss so it couldn't do anything.
@@rjgraves3041 Yeah that's the problem, Celine is a must always every playthrough, but Ashton is pretty cool too would be nice to use him with celine in the party. Best party is Rena, Dias, Claude and Celine. Try getting to max level with everyone then summon Iseria Queen for a super hard fight.
@deusvlad2.083 Oh I have, at max level it was tough. Then I remembered to turn the skill off that gives you extra xp and lowers your combat ability. Then it was easy, just long because of her health bar is so massive.
@@rjgraves3041 O funny you mentioned that, I think I lost to her because I had my skill menu active to earn more exp lmao, you just reminded me how i beat her. I turned it off, if you beat her 10x in a row she comes back even more powerful even at max level everyone. I think If I remember correct each time you beat her she gets stronger until the 10th time when she glitches you dead, she's literally unstoppable then. It was a troll left in by the developers as valkyrie profile kinda has this every 10 kills of Iseria Queen will net you the Angel blade, and for every kill after that you keep getting another Angel blade.
They BOTH Suck so Celine Ashton will NEVER be in my party ever Noel Leon Precis + Welch are all PURE CRAP and won't EVER be in my party ever either. At lv 255 even with that EXP boost/SP boost per lv up turned OFF I still had Iseia queen do 9999 per physical hit to ANYBODY that is NOT Bloody armored and didn't even last for 10 seconds.
I do wonder if they’ll try to tweak certain tiny things for balance. Being able to clap the entire first disc’s cheeks with a Marvel Sword just because some old guy in Mars has a treasure chest in his pocket is as wonderful as it is terrible
probably the remaster is more tempting than the divine force for me. but if they try to remake star ocean 3 though regardless if they keep or tweak the story. improving the engine and combat based on 3rd game.... ughhhh I can play that game over and over again if they give more combat skills and crafting with more conntents. for a ps2 game the combat feels kind of satisfying for me.
Can't wait for this. I used to love the exploit in the beginning where you could famr until lvl 40 or so. Only one problem is that Starfield is coming out before.

This may sound dumb but I don't really like the look of HD 2D. Something about the lighting and filtering makes them look muddy to me but most of what I've seen in this one looks okay so I'm hoping I'll like the final product. Playing star ocean 1 snes on and off rn hopefully I'll beat second story before the remake drops so I have a point of comparison
I’m from the uk 🇬🇧 and i managed to get a perfect condition star ocean 2 second story on PlayStation for £2.50 at a secondhand shop. I laughed because I knew it was worth £100.I spent another £5.00 on grandia and breath of fire 3 as well these had no idea the value 😂

SO2 is my favorite but i haven't had time to play the newest releases. I was never really good at the game so i went out of my way to find ways to break it... lol lv 100, battle suit and eternal sphere before disk 2 FTW
been a fan of the series since the PS1 days and Star Ocean 2 is still then best the series ever produced with the 5th and 3rd game being the weakest among them even with the enhanced combat and graphics they offered. I found Star Ocean 4 to be OK slightly behind the first game and it's remake then I find the 6th game that just came out to be an equal to Star Ocean 4 in quality with a slightly better story not a fan of the HD2d pixelated crap that has been coming out lately and I do prefer the look in the Star Ocean R on the switch vs what I saw on Star Ocean 2R.
Only thing that might be a problem is the source code of the original to make this game. With out it the game will be off/bad like with Silent Hill 2 remaster over to next gen or just out right losing it having to make the game from ground up with Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Im no expert on how games get made in the background but after seeing the remasters and ports over time I believe SO:TSSR will not be the same as the ordinal and most likely had to be rebuilt in some areas. Its a little sad that most game devs have not saved their source codes a lot of gems out there we wont see be remade again.
I love Star Ocean 2 and 3. They were the reason I found the original Valkyrie profile before they even merged with SquareSoft. This is something they should have done with the original Valkyrie Profile instead of making those remakes that they did and it sucked. VP1 should have been just as big as SO2. I actually hope they stopping consider to actually do that for BP because it deserves so much better than what it's been getting. And people were complaining about the voice acting or whatever I didn't give a s*** about the voice acting it was the story and it was the game play that I loved. I could care less about the damn voice acting. I'm glad I already got my coffee can't wait till it comes out. Nostalgia BITCHES!
I've been replaying the entire series again these last few months, and I have to say that SO3 was the most miserable experience of all. It has definitely aged the worst, I still don't like the plot after all these years. So here's hoping that game gets the big budget remake next. It needs it. But anyway, I honestly wish the old PS1 voices for SO2 were available as a bonus. I still miss those old voices that sounded like they were recorded over a phone. They had some iconic lines that my brother and I still quote from the PS1 days. Like Claude after a battle saying "That's somewhere around...... 80 points?" Or Ashton saying in a very dramatic voice "I'm...so.... HAPPY!" And just about everything Precis says. "Heeeere's Mr. Enemy!" "BLOOOOODY MARY!!"
Well they mentioned new sidequests throughout the game to get new gear and such. I imagine they won't be much more than fetch or kill quests, but tossing in some busywork to spice up the grind isn't to bad an idea. SO2 has enough compelling content by itself, some smaller tasks every so often might be nice.

4 had best gameplay it just had bad VA and character model animations looked like dolls with no souls. Was hard to watch cut scenes.

After playing the demo twice I'm super hyped. Honestly playing the second story was rough for me I didn't grow up with it. Played it as a 23 year old. But this remake fixed the majority of the issues I had with it and I truly believe this is gonna be amazing.

SO6 is my favorite i’ve played so far (I’ve finiahed 1R, 5 and 6 and I was about 18 hours into the PSP version of 2). I preordered 2R so quickly, I’m almost certain it’ll be solid. It looks so good 👌🏻

Star Ocean The Second Story was by far the BEST game I ever played on PS1. I am more excited than I could express in words for the remake. I'm really hoping it doesn't disappoint.
It is my favorite game and the benchmark I use to judge games. Imo the only game that came close on Playstation is Suikoden 2.
star ocean 2 is peak gaming for me. i play it once every year (without following guides) so i can get different experience everytime i play it. i probably still missed many things but thats the best part of this game. this is my favorite game which defines my childhood and made me love JRPGs. i hope they don't F this up.
I hope the next star ocean game has optional characters again, it gives the game a lot of replayability and I like feeling like my team is unique to me
The Divine Force was def a good compromise between giving a bit of plauer choice but still having a full party that contributed to the plot. But i agree, maybe two or 3 optional slots

I do recall that at the end of the PS1 version you had an option of making the final boss even harder. I wonder if they'll add that to this version as well. You get another thing but it might be a spoiler so I'll just keep it to myself.
I remember the first time I played SO2 on PS1 I had no memory card. I made it all the way to the second planet and then got stuck behind a chair soft-locking the game. I simply restarted and did it all again, best game ever. I actually purchased a memory card mid-way through my second run (I left the game on overnight multiple times lmao).

Pre-ordered my copy. Played the demo for 2 hours, and 56 minutes (only allowed for 3 hours). The Octopath Traveler art style is an upgrade and it has the original music as an option as well. Camt wait till it comes out. Better beat Tears of the Kindom first though. Although I'm working on Star Ocean the First Encounter R now...
After playing the demo I can say that this will definitely hold up to what’s being shown in the trailers and gameplay. I enjoyed the changes they’ve made in comparison to the original and PSP version. It was fun for sure and the difficulty isn’t too hard nor is it too easy. Looking forward to this 🔥💯

SO has been on my radar forever but it's been prioritised ever since I saw your first video about the series, I bought all the available PS4 games about two years ago in a sale and also picked up a physical copy of The Divine Force back in May but haven't touched any of them yet. When I saw this remake at the direct I figured you'd probably be talking about it. I don't know anything outside of what your videos have told me about the game, but I think it'll be a good remake and I'll probably be buying it (not just because of my JRPG buying problem). Also I'd definitely be down to see more Star Ocean content!
Just here to say...this...is a perfect port/remake. Absolutely perfect. I love it so darn much! I still own my physical copies of the PSX/PSP and now I own this one physically.
this looks awesome! i cant wait to buy this, i own the ps1-psp copy's and im going to go buy this one, this is my all time favorite star star ocean game. and the updated graphics with original sprites is F,N amazing! and if this is going to be more like the ps1 version with a splash of the psp, that just makes me more hyped for it.

honestly i'm looking forward to this remake good or bad since SO2 is ahead of only SO5 in my opinion quality wise but that is informed almost exclusively from looking back on mechanics and game design without context of playing it since i barely remember my original playthrough of the game around when it first came out (though i liked it enough to be exited for SO3 when it came out) and any attempt to go back is stunted by the lengthy unskippable story section the game starts with (1-2 hours of dialogue boxes with only one all but scripted fight is a bit of a turn off when your only there for the gameplay) so the changes to deepen the combat they seem to be trying and the gorgeous visuals alone have me sold.
Idk about Integrity and faithlessness being a big seller considering Tri Ace announced that they were insolvent a few weeks before The Divine Force came out.
The closure of Anamnesis would most likely have been the larger culprit in their financial losses. I also never said that IaF was a 'big seller', just that its underperformance was overblown when compared to the the estimated sales numbers. However I do wish we had been given more concrete numbers in that regard.

7:25 Can bug out? It's always uncompletable without cheats, because there's some soundclips you are not able to hear in a normal playthrough.
Leon and Dias have voice clips for each other, even though you can't ever have them in the party at the same time.
(I guess probably some kind of proof that making them route-exclusive was a later decision)
Also I don't think the combat changes to Second Evolution were all imbalanced, they did serve to make some previously bad characters much more usable.

I've been playing the 3 hour demo and just got to the kingdom of Krosse and I know I'm going to buy a physical copy of the game. I do own the PS1 original but never did defeat the end boss so this Switch version will tide me over til they finally release the Suikoden games and the spirital successor one.

Not to keen on the new environment and the lighting looks like it needs to be adjusted for the sprites to blend in better. Now the gameplay gets me curious since the magic looks like its casted in real tme with no delay in cast and that chages everything for better and worse for so many bosses. I feel like it will be a good remake

As long as they make "Nimble Fingers" an easy skill to get at the beginning. I threw and smashed my PS1 in frustration when I had to keep restarting the game to get it. :)
About that IRC Claude/Rena have around a 50% chance to start with it Rena's game at the start has LESS Dialogue before you can check for Nimble Fingers Claude takes longer to check to see if you have that Talent or not.
I have copies of this game for PS1 (don't ask) and it's the only star ocean game I haven't played. Someone needs to slap it on a disc so it can sit in the collection
One of my favorite JRPGS EVER has to be Valkyrie Profile, I played and re-played that game when I was like 13, remember using a guide and realizing that to unlock everything in the Seraphic Gate I had to play on hard mode, at first I was annoyed, but then I discovered NEW FUCKING DUNGEONS AND STORIES EXCLUSIVE TO HARD MODE!, that blew my fucking mind, getting the true ending and all the Flame Jewels to unlock all the boss party members and their best weapons post game has to be one of most accomplishing things I have ever done in a video game, I kinda skipped the PS2 but got an Xbox 360 when I was like 17, imagine my shock when In a magazine, there was an article about Star Ocean 4, and they describe how the same people behind VP made the game, and how rad the combat system was, I had to play it, and I really liked the combat system, but the story and most of the character interactions were pure agonizing CRINGE..... I seriously don't remember much of the story beyond the Elf guy with a rapier getting possessed and turning evil at the end of the game, needless to say, after completing the game, I didn't even bother with the post game and moved on, never touched another SO game, until now, on a whim I bought the remake after watching the Nintendo Direct, cause' the game kinda had the Octopath style, and my god SO2 blew me away similarly as VP did, played for a while and after getting familiar with the mechanics and systems and missing several PA's I decided to re-start the game, in universe difficulty, had some of the most fun with a JRPG since, a very long time, also, kinda had a nerdgasm when I reached the maze of tribulations and Mission to Deep space started to play!! And when you actually had to Fight Gabriel Celeste and you can even get Valkyrie's armor set!, I'm also proud I only had to cheese the Queen Iseria fight and the Planeteer Sword fun city challenge, once I have more time on my hands I will be playing SO3 and SO1,
TL;DR this remake literally gave that ratatouille flashback the jaded critic got, and made me want to play more games like it.

That will more then 2 skills at once won't happen without the Worthless Link Combo accessory you get 1 of those off of Leon before entering the Hoffman ruins and ANOTHER ONLY on the Cave of Trials 2nd floor chest but its still worthless.
SO2 was my first in the series and by far my favourite. I picked it up on PS1 knowing nothing about it except that it was a JRPG and I was starving for those after having fallen in love with Final Fantasy on PS1. It turned out to be an amazing experience and next to FFVII the best game on the platform IMO. Looking forward to this.

You're talking about stuff being brought from Second Evolution? I can't believe you didn't mention it as it's obvious to me, but the script and voice acting is 100% recycled from Second Evolution, at least if you choose English (as that version not only had much better voice acting, but also covered the main story and not just battles and menus). Japan has two casts to pick from - the original SS cast with a full recording, and a new cast just for this version.
I like the art direction with the remake, but I have to be honest; I'll miss the anime cutscenes added in SE. They were beautiful to watch even at 272p.
BTW, FD was my first foray into the series (picked it up when it first released), while SE....gosh, that had to have been my most played PSP game of all time. It certainly is one of my favorites. I must've played it like 30 times, filled up all available save slots (if you can believe it), and even with different party combinations including nobody but the protagonists. Yeah, I beat all 3 superbosses with JUST the protagonists in my party, no one else ever recruited. (Though I had to abuse the UMD ejection trick to do so in order to stop spells from going off, so...both of my UMDs are literally broken and unusable now lol)

I just can’t believe we’re only 3 months away and we still don’t have anything other than the original launch trailer. I need to know graphics/framerate/load times differences between ps5 and switch so I know which version to preorder since stores likely won’t get any copies of this unless you reserve it.
The problem with having 80 different endings is playing the game 80 times is a killer, also playing it multiple times to get a specific set of characters was sad. I wanted to get everyone in both playthroughs and let me choose who to have in battle and swap them out if they died during the battle too. Since you can only get Dias with Rena's playthrough he's the strongest character in the game when you max him at 255 he gets hidden bonus to all physical attributes and has skills that can cheap kill massive enemies. Then the other problem is if you pick Celine you won't be able to choose this specific character can't remember, but Celine is a must and so is Dias.
You can have them both in the party with Rena's data, but you lose someone else during the travels, depending on who you choose. I've always hated that about Star ocean games.
You either get Celine or Ashton, the boy with the dragons on his back. Funny enough if you pick Rena in the beginning. You can stun lock enemies with Claude, Ashton and Dias ult combo moves. At high levels and skill grinding I locked the final boss so it couldn't do anything.
@@rjgraves3041 Yeah that's the problem, Celine is a must always every playthrough, but Ashton is pretty cool too would be nice to use him with celine in the party.
Best party is Rena, Dias, Claude and Celine.
Try getting to max level with everyone then summon Iseria Queen for a super hard fight.
@deusvlad2.083 Oh I have, at max level it was tough. Then I remembered to turn the skill off that gives you extra xp and lowers your combat ability. Then it was easy, just long because of her health bar is so massive.
@@rjgraves3041 O funny you mentioned that, I think I lost to her because I had my skill menu active to earn more exp lmao, you just reminded me how i beat her. I turned it off, if you beat her 10x in a row she comes back even more powerful even at max level everyone.
I think If I remember correct each time you beat her she gets stronger until the 10th time when she glitches you dead, she's literally unstoppable then.
It was a troll left in by the developers as valkyrie profile kinda has this every 10 kills of Iseria Queen will net you the Angel blade, and for every kill after that you keep getting another Angel blade.
They BOTH Suck so Celine Ashton will NEVER be in my party ever Noel Leon Precis + Welch are all PURE CRAP and won't EVER be in my party ever either.
At lv 255 even with that EXP boost/SP boost per lv up turned OFF I still had Iseia queen do 9999 per physical hit to ANYBODY that is NOT Bloody armored and didn't even last for 10 seconds.

I do wonder if they’ll try to tweak certain tiny things for balance. Being able to clap the entire first disc’s cheeks with a Marvel Sword just because some old guy in Mars has a treasure chest in his pocket is as wonderful as it is terrible

Star ocean 3 has a great combat system, finnicky at first but with an unreal skill ceiling

This may sound dumb but I don't really like the look of HD 2D. Something about the lighting and filtering makes them look muddy to me but most of what I've seen in this one looks okay so I'm hoping I'll like the final product. Playing star ocean 1 snes on and off rn hopefully I'll beat second story before the remake drops so I have a point of comparison

I’m from the uk 🇬🇧 and i managed to get a perfect condition star ocean 2 second story on PlayStation for £2.50 at a secondhand shop. I laughed because I knew it was worth £100.I spent another £5.00 on grandia and breath of fire 3 as well these had no idea the value 😂

been a fan of the series since the PS1 days and Star Ocean 2 is still then best the series ever produced with the 5th and 3rd game being the weakest among them even with the enhanced combat and graphics they offered. I found Star Ocean 4 to be OK slightly behind the first game and it's remake then I find the 6th game that just came out to be an equal to Star Ocean 4 in quality with a slightly better story not a fan of the HD2d pixelated crap that has been coming out lately and I do prefer the look in the Star Ocean R on the switch vs what I saw on Star Ocean 2R.

Only thing that might be a problem is the source code of the original to make this game. With out it the game will be off/bad like with Silent Hill 2 remaster over to next gen or just out right losing it having to make the game from ground up with Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Im no expert on how games get made in the background but after seeing the remasters and ports over time I believe SO:TSSR will not be the same as the ordinal and most likely had to be rebuilt in some areas. Its a little sad that most game devs have not saved their source codes a lot of gems out there we wont see be remade again.

I love Star Ocean 2 and 3. They were the reason I found the original Valkyrie profile before they even merged with SquareSoft. This is something they should have done with the original Valkyrie Profile instead of making those remakes that they did and it sucked. VP1 should have been just as big as SO2. I actually hope they stopping consider to actually do that for BP because it deserves so much better than what it's been getting. And people were complaining about the voice acting or whatever I didn't give a s*** about the voice acting it was the story and it was the game play that I loved. I could care less about the damn voice acting. I'm glad I already got my coffee can't wait till it comes out. Nostalgia BITCHES!

I've been replaying the entire series again these last few months, and I have to say that SO3 was the most miserable experience of all. It has definitely aged the worst, I still don't like the plot after all these years. So here's hoping that game gets the big budget remake next. It needs it.
But anyway, I honestly wish the old PS1 voices for SO2 were available as a bonus. I still miss those old voices that sounded like they were recorded over a phone. They had some iconic lines that my brother and I still quote from the PS1 days. Like Claude after a battle saying "That's somewhere around...... 80 points?" Or Ashton saying in a very dramatic voice "I'm...so.... HAPPY!" And just about everything Precis says. "Heeeere's Mr. Enemy!" "BLOOOOODY MARY!!"
So, what all new content do you think they are adding?
Well they mentioned new sidequests throughout the game to get new gear and such. I imagine they won't be much more than fetch or kill quests, but tossing in some busywork to spice up the grind isn't to bad an idea. SO2 has enough compelling content by itself, some smaller tasks every so often might be nice.
