History of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, Port of Los Angeles, San Pedro, California
Port of Los Angeles: An Illustrated History from 1850 to 1945 by my friend Ernest Marquez
amzn.to/49UtmIz
The Vincent Thomas Bridge had been in the news lately with pending plans to replace the bridge’s aging and deteriorating deck either late in 2025 or early 2026. Rerouting traffic for the 16-month construction project is under consideration and Caltrans is asking for public input, but no doubt there will be traffic congestion for commuters and the semi-trucks carrying shipping containers to and from the container ship terminals in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. If they go for the full closure it has been termed “Haborgeddon” and Caltrans have suggested preliminary detour routes.
The bridge connects San Pedro and Long Beach crossing over the Main Channel as part of State Route 47 and has been in existence for 60 years.
Traffic traveling south on I-110 and Interstate 710 (I-710) often utilize the Vincent Thomas Bridge as a main corridor. Average daily traffic on the Bridge is 53,000 vehicles per day, with 8.8 percent of the daily traffic being heavy trucks.
Naming of the bridge. After graduating law school Vincent Thomas went to work for Star Kist tuna as a dock boss. In 1940, he successfully became a California Assemblyman where he served for 19 consecutive terms earning him the nickname “Dean of the Assembly.” He championed and argued the building of the San Pedro - Terminal Island bridge for 19 years, he had been ridiculed as building “The bridge to nowhere.”
In 1961 the California Legislature passed Concurrent Resolution 131 naming the suspension bridge in his honor. Every weekend he returned from Sacramento and checked on the construction of the bridge.
The dedication of the Vincent Thomas Bridge was on September 28, 1963, the event was staged in conjunction with the celebration of the annual Fisherman’s Fiesta at the harbor. The 365-foot-high steel support towers stood proud over the crowd that came to celebrate the completion of the $22 million bridge. Many community dignitaries were in attendance including Assemblyman Vincent Thomas. Y
Opened for traffic on November 15, 1963. The toll was 25 cents in each direction, with the toll plaza on the Terminal Island side, Assemblyman Thomas paid the first toll. In 1983, the toll increased to 50 cents for westbound traffic but became free for eastbound traffic. In the year 2000, tolls were eliminated.

Great video. I was an engineer ran the Saugus line for 50 years. The first tunnel on the top someone took black paint and wrote Etchycoo on the tunnel portal. The name was the engineers nickname. Years ago my friend and engineer mentor was on an eastbound and ran into the superintendent s hyrail car on the steel bridge. Between the tunnels was a home on the left going west was the party house for naturists.
@@jimg6476 thanks for sharing
Engineer Jim, where did you travel to beyond Saugus?

I love the mix of history and current events. The details added to the whole story
Why thank you, I was wondering if I should have reversed the order so not to confuse viewers with modern events in the beginning
Remember it well! Used to have to service a couple of emergency water pumps & gensets in San Pedro area, then hit up Busy Bee Market @ 24th & Walker for one of the best hot sandwiches in Los Angeles area! Never had to go over to Terminal Island for any reason but the bridge is part of the area skyline. Interesting stuff, thanks for a great video, Robert!
Cool memories Mark, thanks for sharing. Happy holidays!
Thank you for this video. I love traveling over the bridge.
Glad you enjoyed it, it was a fun journey learning about its history and construction
Went over Vincent Thomas bridge numerous times when I was stationed at the US Naval Station on the USS Hollister (DD-788). Now the naval station and adjacent shipyard are a huge container yard. Only the Navy mole still reminds me of the area in the late 1970s. PS - only the Titan, better known by nickname Herman the German (US Navy designation YD-171), a large floating crane currently serving in the Panama Canal performing heavy lifts for lock maintenance survives from the US Naval Shipyard PS2 - looking forward to going to the new Ports of Call.
Thank you for sharing and your service in the U.S. Navy. I recall photographs of Herman the German, glad it is still in service in the Canal zone.
I just got off the phone with a very dear friends son who was living in Cambria when this attack happened. She still has the newspaper clipping of the attack. Seems strange that our country has kept this story so quiet. War was war on our land no matter what type of ship it was. Thankfully all of the men survived.
@@hopieelliott6053 how special to hear, yet another first person memory, I feel honored to meet the last two known survivors, a friendship with Richard Quincy for 20 years R.I.P.
About 50 years ago I worked for Classic Catering and we had a function in Huntington Harbor for Xmas on the night of the parade of boats. I remember it well for one thing the man throwing the party tipped the crew $20 a piece!
Looks like a good time, had our boat parade here at Lake Havasu in the bridgewater channel last night(where the London Bridge is), lot of people! Thanks Robert, all good here!

Thanks Mark, couldn't image if there was a combined large swell that day, still spectacular to watch from above
$1300 to remove all. Dirt cheap. For that you get a man without the most basic PPE which I’d a helmet, and a put yourself as the homeowner up for a lot a liability in case of an accident
Great video. I was an engineer that ran the coastline for years . always enjoyed traveling through VDB base. Saw many missile shots. Enjoyed seeing the mockup of the Space Shuttle on display..it was beautiful. The Space Shuttle was going to be launched in a polar orbit instead of an equitorial orbit from Cape Canaveral. I have a copy of the book entitled Tragedy at Honda about the naval disaster in 1923 involving the US Navy destroyers.
@@jamesg2609 thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge of the region. I remember during the Cold War no photos were allowed even though the train passes by each day with passengers taking pictures
I worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as an engineer. I made many trips over the Santa Paula branch. In later years when the branch was closed due to the bridge washout at Saugus during the heavy rains. I also worked at the movie ranch at the old Blue Moon Saloon where the film Throw Momma from the Train was filmed. This line was the original mainline from Los Angeles to Montalvo and westward. The section of track from Oxnard to Chatsworth was built later in the early 1900$. thanks for the great video.

This video is an amazing piece of work! The line from Santa Clarita to Ventura was actually part of the main line between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The construction of the tunnel near Santa Susanna/Chatsworth made it possible to bypass the Santa Clarita/Ventura line with a much shorter distance, but it was still in use as a backup route until a bridge washed out near Castaic in 1979. When Valencia was built up in the 1990s, the right of way east of this Iron Horse was built upon with condos and a shopping center. This may be a mistake just in case rail travel is developed.

@@extraordinarymoments Yes, one thing I thought the crew did was incredulous., they carried oil to HAWAII then steam cleaned the tanks and carried food grade liquid back to the States. What an incredible type of work.

These attacks happened up and down our West coast, this is why the Japanese/American enternment camps were made...to prevent those allied with Japan from helping a possible total US invaision.. Seven subs made attacks on our WEST COAST that struck fear to civilians and Government people alike. Yet most attacks were kept secret rom the rest of America..
So very true.. Your words were told to me about one of the reasons why the interment camps had to happen. One of her dearest friends was a young Japanese student that attended the school she went to in Cambria. She said that it was a very sad day and one she has never forgotten. 😢
@@hopieelliott6053 THE SADDIST PART WAS THE REAL REASON THE GOVERMENT KEPT IT AS A SECRET!
Now I’ve known of a ship that had been sunk by the Japanese in WW2 off our coast but didn’t know the name of it until couple of years ago when I visit the maritime museum in Morro Bay. It’s pretty amazing that the torpedo didn’t manage to set off more catastrophic damage given how deadly they were, let alone that everyone had survived.
@@Ro6entX yes truly amazing luck for the crew that the torpedo struck in the section of ship that either the cargo of oil or crew quarters were located
It's hard for those of us born post WW2 to comprehend our world at war, to know what it is to be afraid of attack...that's why these stories are so important. Our grandfathers and grandmothers knew. And we need to listen. I'm in Portland Oregon and this is the first time I've learned that two ships were sunk off our coast! We have the best, most well trained and armed military in the world! Well done. Now can we do the same with education? We're failing, badly. Our military is protecting some very ignorant people.
Well stated, I have photograph of my mom reading the newspaper when the war ended, my dad built ships during WWII. I explored another shipwreck the SS Coast Trader that was torpedoed on the Washington/Canada border. The I-25 shelled Fort Stevens in Oregon was equipped with an aircraft hangar that housed a seaplane the dropped incendiary firebombs in the Oregon forest.
@@extraordinarymoments Incredible. I could probably ask any Oregonian about this and I'd bet money they've never heard of it. A big THANK YOU for educating us. We really need to know, and it isn't being taught in school. Thank you for the work you put in, greatly appreciated. 🌹
