My Granny gave me a Joys of Jell-O cook book back in the early 1970s for Christmas. She inscribed it "Have a Happy Time making Jell-O." I did. That was the first cookbook I ever got.
Our Christmas dinner was baked ham and potato salad. Christmas cookies were dessert. Everywhere we went visiting family on Christmas had the same thing. One year my Aunt made macaroni salad with sewer pipe noodles. My mother was shocked never stopped talking about. LOL 😂
We never had a special Christmas dinner back in the ’70s, it was just a regular day as far as meals are concerned. As for Thanksgiving, we as always had it at our oldest uncle’s house along with the rest of the family and it was at noon not nighttime. It was always a big spread with everyone bringing something. As for turkey I don’t remember that either, we were mostly beef, chicken, pork, and venison. My mom baked a turkey one time and said never again. A few years ago a friend cooked a deep fried turkey and it was delicious, much better than baked. The rest of the dishes are still part of our family’s Thanksgiving.
Growing up in the 70’s we had turkey for thanksgiving and Christmas. Now we have turkey for thanksgiving and Chinese for Christmas. Thanks to a Christmas Story
I haven't heard of most of the things listed as typical 1970's Christmas foods. My family either re-created the Thanksgiving turkey dinner or went real fancy and had a large canned Dak ham. It was an honor to be the one allowed to break off the key and open the can. Typical sides like stuffing or mac & cheese, a relish tray and either banana pudding or jello parfaits which was chocolate pudding layered with cool whip or Redi Whip and topped with a cherry. We used the best wine goblets for presentation. Imported German cookies, my grandmother's fruitcake and a bag of fruit filled hard candies were common too.
Prime rib is king ! Rare with lots of garlic. Pecan pie with loads of whip cream and hand made dinner rolls with lots of real fresh handmade butter.. Perfection at its best!
