Do you know of anything coming to NC?
Happy Christmas Eve Walter! The free ccs to nacs adapter for Hyundai EVs news just hit.........I might be more excited than you were when your Lyriq got it's first sip of Muskrat juice. I am tickled pink, best x-mas gift and new year EVER! 20,000 more reasons to drive anxiety free across this great USA!
Crock of 💩 i can not charge my 2020 Kia Niro PHEV
Well done! I have the EV Dance NACS-CCS1 adapter. Came in handy, as I used my cousin's Level 2 Tesla charger while visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday
I genuinely get excited when I see a new upload from you. I truly appreciate all of your videos 😃
Thanks! BTW: Ruidoso is pronounced roo·uh·dow·sow.
Fubared it. Thx 4 correct one. Have a good holiday
Keep up the good work Walter. Thanks.
I stopped by the pilot in corsicana Texas today. No construction. However, there is an area of the parking lot directly in front of the gasoline pumps that has been marked off and separated with fencing. I also stopped by the Plano, Texas Chisholm plaza site. Chisholm plaza is a decrepit old shopping center. However, just across the street is an out of business gas station and next door to it is what appears to be an old closed Sonic. Ionna will have competition at the Chisholm plaza location. There is a Shell station across the street that is installing four electric car chargers. The chargers at the Shell station appear to be Chinese. A shipping crate had star charge label on it. The chargers are labeled "hyper fuel"
Thx! I am guessing sometime before summer it will be clear their intentions there. Have a good holiday
I have pictures of the corsicana pilot and the area around Chisholm plaza in Plano as well as the chargers going in across the street from Chisholm plaza if you're interested.@@thenetworkarchitectchannel
Ok, just got back from my Costco run down to Springfield and swung by Flying J and charged there, and went by Bucees and saw both the Mercedes and Tesla SC site. There is signage on the interstate saying EV charging for the Flying J, I did not notice any signage for EV charging for Bucees. It was good to see a sign. The charger worked as expected. I pulled in to find a Lyriq charging. I thought dang, Walter beat me to the site! It is canopy site that they extended the gas station canopy down over the EV chargers. No issues with getting the session to activate. My Tesla didn't know we were going to charge so it was cold gating from the 20-30 degree temps from the trip down. By the time the battery warmed up it was time to leave! LOL Thought I was back in my Bolt again! Oh, the price tag at Flying J, 65c per kwh! Outrageous. I have EVgo credits to us or I wouldn't have charged there. I have pics for you if you would like them. The Alpitronics are in the ground and have been activated. I got some pics of those. Tesla is at the end where the entrance is going into that ZOO and is very congested. The Tesla SCs were HOPPING today. It was almost packed and they will coming in as fast as they were leaving. It is a bad place to be able to turn into that parking lot because of the volume of traffic coming into and out of this place right at the entrance. The Mercedes are at the opposite end of the complex. Much less traffic and a much more peaceful experience over there. They are VERY NICE. But no one was charging on the Mercedes chargers. The rates are high. They put a $50 hold on your credit card per the card reader display and then release it afterwards. It is 52c per kwh + state sales tax. That is a ripoff if you are a resident of the state we already have to pay for an alternative fuels sticker so I prepay more than my share of taxes already and to get gigged for more tax at these chargers is insane. They had a couple of the chargers setup for ADA access. There is no canopy for these chargers. They do have trash cans. The Mercedes charging is slightly closer to the Bucees store so I would assume it would be faster to get inside, use facilities and get out from that part of the lot than the Tesla side. Interesting to see 2 CPO's sharing turf. I was in a hurry so I didn't get time to run inside the Bucees. So Mercedes is in fact live at Bucees in Springfield. As a comparison the Tesla SC cost for a Tesla owner is 33c kwh compared to the 52c at Mercedes. I don't know what the non-Tesla rate is at that site. But at that sort of price difference anyone who can use Tesla will. But if you are stuck waiting to get a charger and don't want to wait the Mercedes chargers appear to be very nice experience and in a nicer place!
It was good to hear they are putting the hammer down to get these things in the ground fast!
Yeah, this crew means business. Happy holidays
@@thenetworkarchitectchannel I have some pictures for you of the Mercedes site at Bucees and of the Flying J in Springfield if you would like those. I posted an update to your Mercedes vid. Happy Holidays
Thx! You can also email to me if easier. Walter dot h dot schulze at gmail dot com
@@thenetworkarchitectchannel You have mail. Let me know if you need additional pics.
I stopped at Hope Hull, AL location about a month ago when I bought my new Equinox EV. The first one quit working for some reason so I had move my car to another charger. I didn't have any issues with the 2nd one.
Thanks Walter for asking the CEO about plans for Canada. I live in Ontario and the fast charging infrastructure along our major freeway (401) is terrible with broken chargers and very few chargers above 200 kws. BC and Quebec do it right so I hope Ionna targets Ontario for their rechargeries. PS I enjoy your Pilot Flying J updates. I will be using them next week on my snowbird trip to Florida.
You’re welcome & safe travels to the sunshine state. Happy holidays
I personally wouldn't be using a charger that isn't UL Listed
You are not alone. I personally do not mind and will provide any updates if problems are found. We are using this as our daily charging src for one of out two EVs now, so it will get a lot of use. Thx for watching.
@@thenetworkarchitectchannelI appreciate the open, honest content. I just worry about differentiating the good quality products from the junk
@@metal_horses568 in the case of EVdance, I personally would not call their products junk. I have used 3 & interacted with their staff. The operate a customer svc dept and the marketing contact I interact with is obviously professional. Neither have I had anything but good success with their products. Specifically the 80 amp Tesla tap has been working like a champ better than the lectron. I respect others may hold a different view of the company and their products. My interaction have been positive.
@@thenetworkarchitectchannelThat's good. I just hope the internals hold up. Hopefully getting UL Listed is in the works
Walter, The breaker for your 14-50 outlet doesn’t look like it is a GCFI model. That should have been included in your $1000 install, and may have been required by code if installed after your local authority updated to the latest National Electrical Code.
Thanks! I just checked and it was 2021. It was both permitted and inspected, so maybe that was not code back then.
$1000 for 14-50 just two feet from the breaker? Wow, I would expect $400-500 for that. However, the latest NEC requires a GCFI breaker for outlets used for EV charging. That adds enough cost to make a hardwired EVSE less expensive in total than a 14-50 plus portable EVSE.
thx for adding the color.
Three times now I’ve heard both the CEO and the infrastructure guy say “all locations will be a minimum of 12 chargers with a few exceptions”, and yet all I’m seeing is 10 and 8 at what is so far known.
I know, right? Where's all these twelves they keep talking about... Happy holidays
I have a 40amp circuit but currently just running a old 16amp Clipper Creek I had for 10 years. I have other higher amp units but I like the older one for its small super thin charging cord. I charge 3 cars with it.
Didn't know Emphase/CC made a sixteen. They make good stuff. Like the Sears Roebuck of the charging industry. I bet it outlives the three cars twice over.
@@thenetworkarchitectchannelnot really any more but its a good time to restart making them as California will require 16 as a min in all homes.
Love the focus on local businesses. #shoplocal
win-win-win. Local business gets a store front. Charging customers get local fare. iONNA has site maintenance easily taken care of without having to manage staff. Smart thinking, which seems to be prevalent in that crew. Thx for watching.
Thanks for the content, Walter
My pleasure!
$1000 seems excessive for such a short run being next to the electrical panel like that.
Just checked. $883. We did get it back in taxes next yr though.
Thanks Walter. I have learned so much with your videos. Thanks again. 👍🏽
Happy Holidays. Thx for watching.
I can’t believe it. Sulpher Springs, Texas opened today, after sitting idle for over 6 months. My trip to kids is now all Pilot/Flying J
I saw, Exciting!!! Orange too. Maybe Anthony? nah, that is too much to ask for. Happy Holidays!
Thanks, Walter! When I had my NEMA 14-50 installed about 8 years ago with a 4' feed, it cost me $200. I guess it helps to hire a local electrician in a small community.
I pulled the receipt. In $2021 it was $889. We got it back due to taxes the next year. There was some provision in that tax cycle. I think we got taxes back too for the even older Tesla hard wire one. In the years since, it has paid for it self if in nothing more than weekly chore trips to fill up at the gas station I use to do. Have't done that in I can't even remember how long. Happy holidays Eric
Nice work on the video and the interview! Glad to see that Ionna is coming to fruition and that it wasn't just an effort that fizzled before getting anything done.
I am glad that it's happening. Looking forward to seeing more of these.
I could not find any mention of a temperature sensor in the 14-50 plug, which I believe is important to prevent connector damage or fire. The website mentions thermal protection on the mainboard of the charger, but does not say anything about the plug.
Good point. I am unsure. They do have a support line if you ever wish to hear the answer from them.
Take all the progress we can get!
Since you have two EVs, it makes sense to have a 2nd level 2 "charger" in the garage. And it makes even more sense to have one of them portable, for when and if you are on a roadtrip. I had to install a second "holster" like you did in a stud, but I bought one that let's me plug it in from the side so that it doesn't stick out so far. I noted, by the way, that you use the same J1772 adapter on your HPWC that I have on mine. I might recommend that my daughter take a look at EVDance's solutions for her new (used) Ioniq 5.
I like their 80 Amp tap. The lectron got hot. The EVdance does not. Stays ambient. For portable, both the Cadi & Volvo have portable that came with them that I keep in the two cars, so in our case no need there. I like the way this turned out. It was a fun video to make. I like being able to do home work like this and in the EV passion of mine was double points. Have a good holiday.
This IONNA progress makes my day! And speaking of days, Happy Solstice to you, Walter!
Same to you! My wife and & made it to 25 today. We are going to see the nutcracker and have a nice dinner. We were married on the solstice under what was known as a super moon. I am very fortunate to have been married to her all this time. Best decision of my life. Happy holidays.
Really appreciate your efforts with the updates Walter. One thought about the Garner, NC site... There may be a need for a soil remediation if the tanks come out. This would extend the project's timeline. If anyone with experience in such matters would care to provide some insight into this, it'd be very welcome info.
The iONNA higher up at Apex said they had to do that at Apex too. I am thinking it is just a rabit trail on their ghant that they bake in when needed. This crew is all business.
That Brockville ON station was ready and waiting for more than 7 months, I think it was waiting for the power connection
Have a 32 amp level 2 charger - all I need. 40 amp circuit. Can derate to 24, 20, or 16 amps.
Yeah it's plenty sufficient for home use. If it was a destination charger, like work, 48 or higher would be great to accommodate more EV owners. My employer has 6 older chargers in our lot maxing around 29a at 208v and it can be a pain when some hog it all day.
I agree. As long as I can charge to what I need while eating dinner and sleeping, doesn't really matter. Thx for watching. This was a fun one to make.
Hi Walter, great videos. Have you seen the ConnectDER behind the meter? I think it will save people a lot of money. If you could go more in-depth into ConnectDER? That would be nice.
It is a smart solution. I am thinking SoC TH-cam will be a better outlet for that though.
My concern now is, does the grid surcharge fee, make it impossible for smaller operators to make a profit and hence will slow down independent players from joining the market? Ionna is starting off great. Really surprised.
I am thinking there will only be big players in the short term until independent c-store operators start in earnest. The bar has been raised so high here it is hard for startups to reach.
Thanks for the video. It might be a good idea to get an infrared thermometer and check the temp of the outlet (and the breaker) from time to time. It's just another layer of insurance. The connections can work loose over time and have high resistance, leading to excessive heat and possibly a fire.
I was thinking the same. It will be the primary going forward. Maybe add to content of 40 amp vs 32 amp. Happy holidays
Absolutely. I keep one near my setup and check at the plug, the outlet the EVSE and handle. I also check the EV dance extension ends since I use those 2x a week
I went this route after pickup up a 2nd OEM Volvo EVSE for my XC40 Recharge. One stays in my trunk and the other is permanently plugged into Leviton's upgraded EV rated Nema outlet on a 40a breaker.
@@diydrivenGA You're a professional. The only thing that needs to be checked is the connections.
@layking9228 I'm not
Is Ionna planning anything for Canada?
Yes, I linked the event vid where I interviewed the CEO and asked him that exact question
@ just getting caught up with all your uploads! Its impressive how fast they got Apex online. 2 months is wild. Here a grid connection is 8-14 months!
I agree. Btw, I’m off TH-cam till next yr. Stay safe out there.
@ thanks. Have a great holiday
I'm really jazzed at the opportunity you and your kiddo had to visit IONNA! It's cool to see so many sites well-underway to being built. I'm wondering if it would be helpful to have a national map with pips (similar to your PFJ updates) to help contextualize the buildout both geographically and over time. Like, what would the first national map look like in January vs July vs December?
Yes, I am way ahead of you. Gonna to move in the map pip direction prob in Jan. Their pace is picking up and we are no longer talking about a handful with each one on a slide. I am kinda hoping iONNA puts something out I can use from them instead of making one myself.
Thanks Walter! I’m really ready to see that “Coming Soon” list explode! A map like Rivian does would be awesome. Maybe? They seem to be SLOWLY emerging from their “stealth mode”. This IS happening fast. So glad too!
Right now, I am a little ham-strung. I hope they put out a map or something. The tile method on their web-site is gonna become impractical pretty soon. Have a safe holiday.
Hi! great video! - What adapter do you use for NACS to J1772 on the wall connector? Thank you.
I have both the Lectron and EVdance. I regularly use the EVdance. It is rated for 80 amps. The Lectron gets hot.
@ thanks! Ever tested either with an E-GMP car? The website it’s non compatible with ev-6 but ok with ioniq 6. Which is confusing.
Walter, The 16 A portable EVSE is not just Level 1. It can be used with a NEMA 6-20 outlet for a 240 V L2 solution.
Is Las Vegas, Nevada even remotely a possibility?
dead certain, just not sure when. 30k is the water mark of the TesSC. Everywhere there is one of those is the same number of these.
@@thenetworkarchitectchannel Tesla has ~28k stalls as of December 2025. Many of those Superchargers are 40+ stalls. I have to imagine that IONNA won't continue with these 10-12 stall sites for long, especially since they don't bring in enough traffic to sustain whatever business is located there.
@@anthonyc8499Rivian will begin their build out in earnest starting next Year but of course Wawa and Buccees have charging in addition to regular fueling of course and Tesla is now coming out with induction charging. Add to this #Aptera starting production next year and might not even need to charge your vehicle depending upon how efficient that solar powered vehicle in fact is. There are former pure play bevs that went bankrupt in Arcimoto and Electromechanica plus an all electric motorcycle in #zero_motorcycles and the Fiat 500e for lease in Colorado for zero dollars per Month $0.00 per month for 27 Months long story short there is already no lacking of charging infrastructure in the USA and expect this to turn into a massive glut for 2025 #evgo add to that charging infrastructure for aircraft now in the USA as well #beta_technologies 😊😊
Is there an App for Ionna? I can't seem to find it.
nope. Still waiting.
According to what I've seen from the site review videos of the Apex, NC Ionna Rechargery on TH-cam, there will be a dedicated Ionna app coming but no specific date specified yet.
Can pay by Chargepoint app
Huber Heights is not that far from Springfield.
Yeah, that seems strange to me too. Go figure. Its a big country and they are clustering there. Maybe a big GM Exec or someone lives near there. ;-)
