Roland S-1 | Solo performance | using reverb musically demo
A short performance with the Roland S-1 synthesizer. I wanted to do something where I used as many features of the S-1 as I could. So PWM, osc chopping, LFO pitch/ filter wobble, pink noise, delay, reverb, chorus, portamento....etc all went into this patch and I had a lot of fun with it. The patch begins simple with a tip tapping sound from a quick decaying filter envelope using the noise oscillator then transitions into an overwhelming and sort of haze of yelling and calling back and forth.
If enough people are interested in this patch, please feel free to let me know in the comments and I will put together a tutorial.

Roland S-1 | Polynomial-C - Aphex Twin | Melody Tutorial
มุมมอง 7K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
A tutorial for the Aphex Twin's Polynomial-C performed solely on the Roland S-1. The S-1 is a fantastic compact synth and is inspired by the Roland SH-101, a synth Aphex Twin was known to use often. This isn't intended to be an exact recreation of Polynomial-C, just my favorite part with some added improvisations. If you make some improvements to get the sound even closer to the original - I'd ...
Simple composition and arrangement on the Synthstrom Deluge
มุมมอง 1.2K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Synthstrom Deluge has been taking most of my attention the past month. It's a fantastic groovebox and synthesizer that is more than capable of producing full songs with complex sound design and arrangement. I wanted to create a video that was completely improvised including sound design, composition, and arrangement. In under 20 minutes I go from basic square waves to a multi-section piece ...
Roland S-1 | Solo Jam & Demo
มุมมอง 1.2K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've been playing around with my Roland S-1 to discover new chord progressions and I came across a trick for playing chords in a unique way. The chord progression in this video is extremely common, but it demonstrates the utility of the S-1. This "trick" uses the step loop function playing pre-programmed chords & voicings set to different steps. I will follow this video up with a more extensive...
Roland S -1 | Interstellar Tutorial | Sound design, pattern programming, & performance
มุมมอง 28K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
A tutorial for how I created my Interstellar cover on the Roland S-1. The S-1 is a very capable compact synth that gives larger hardware a run for its money. It is battery powered, works great with MIDI controllers (I personally use it with an OP-Z), and most importantly sounds great. I created my Interstellar cover with solely the S-1, as well as many other songs, and I've yet to be let down b...

After waiting four months for my, lost in the mail, OP-Z I finally got it last week and wanted to pair it with my Roland S-1. Roland S-1 | 12 Step Program | A Noise Oscillator Demo

A continuation of my solo Roland S-1 series. I wanted to show that the noise oscillator has its uses & can sound pretty good when you keep it under control(which I let go once or twice in this song). I almost didn't release this one because I wasn't perfectly happy with my perfomance and I also didn't realize my head is in half of it... But it's 1:30am and I've been trying to perfect this song ...

Roland S-1 Inspired by the documentary Tones Drones and Arpeggios: The Magic of Minimalism, I've been working on some minimalist pieces for my solo Roland S-1 series. The amount of variation you create is incredible, i picked up a few ideas a to try out watching you. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, a tutorial would be very nice
Good to hear! I'll add it to my to-do list -- thanks!
Incredible what you have done with only one patch and a bar.
Thank you! Often with my S-1, that is my goal -- to maximize what I can do with just a single patch/sequence. Thanks for listening!
When will Roland address the product defect of having no MIDI Volume (CC07)? Roland has not released a MIDI synth in the last 40 years without this essential and fundamental feature. Roland - Please wake up and put it into a firmware update!
我不知道你扭啊扭的具体改了些什么,就是觉得不好听,蛮无聊的。感觉是为了改点什么扭啊扭的。
Sorry you didn't like it that much! I do feel like I could have done more to break up the pattern, or made some changes faster, so it wouldn't have repeat so many times. Thanks for your input & listening!
This is very cool, it'd be great if you could make a tutorial, thanks!
Thanks for listening to it! I'll try to put together a tutorial soon
Very cool. Love to learn how the patch was done. Thanks.
Thanks! I'll put something together
So cool!! Love your demos, just got an s-1 and this is so helpful
Thanks for watching! Glad you find them helpful! I'll be putting out more tutorials soon!
That’s a beautiful patch
Thank you!
@@markyounq replicated and saved on my S-1, Thank you.
tysm very great tutorial
Thank you! Let me know if you have any requests!
Sounds like Phillip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi
Interesting! Phillip Glass is one of my biggest inspirations so I'll take that as a huge compliment!
🔥🔥🔥🫡
Thanks for watching!
From another world 👌🏻🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for listening!
That thing is a little powerhouse, for as simple a synth as it seems to be. You sure know it inside and out!
It really is! Thank you for watching!
Desoipte being a modular junkie I love these compact series. Beside j6 have all of them.
I really enjoyed this.
Thank you! That means a lot to me
Impressive! 😍
Thank you very much!
Not correct
Are you saying it's "not correct" that this is a Rhodes piano-esque patch inspired by everything in its right place? Or are you saying it's "not correct" to use a Roland S-1 at all? 🤔
You're a loser. That's correct.you have no friends. Also correct
Yeah right 😂😂😂😂
Exactly what ive been looking for, thank you, its sounds even better in life.
So glad to hear that!
Thank you Mark, this is a brilliant tutorial, it inspires me to dig deeper 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching
Not only is it great to play some RH on my gear, I also learned a lot about my S-1 from this, thanks!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you learned something from it!
@@markyounq something else I (re)learned is that after making changes to a pattern (which includes any changes to the sound), you have to WRITE them to memory (SHIFT+16), or they will be lost, just like my EIIRP pattern. 😞
You're making me realize in all of my tutorials I never explicitly say to save anything! Maybe that's just my trick to make people rewatch the video...😂
The original is on a Prophet 5, isn’t it?
I think so. I actually went through a lot of different attempts at the sound but thought this replicated the feeling the most. But that's why I didn't make this a full tutorial about the song, more just the sound I created. Hope you enjoyed!
Simple patch too, sound comes from the snappy envelope.
Wow so interesting! I need an S-1 asap! Subscribed for more! 👍
Thank you for watching! The S-1 is a lot of fun for something that can fit in a pocket
So good!! You are a wizard!! ❤
Thank you for watching!
Man... That sounds amazing. I love how the reverb makes it sound like chords playing. Definitely going to copy this one. Thanks!
The S-1 reverb is so good! Thanks for watching
This is awesome! Very helpful to hear you go through every setting like that. I get my own weird ideas about what they all mean to me, but it's nice to hear someone else explain (e.g. osc draw, and your take on reverb settings, chorus etc.). Especially in the context of a specific patch like this. So.. Thank you! Well done.
Really nice job you made of that.
Thank you very much!
Wow wow wow thats amazing!!!
Thank you! Glad you liked it
excellent work. this is amazing
Thank you very much! Hope it was helpful
so nice! could you imagine creating an in-depth video about your sounddesign approach with the s-1? :)
Thank you! I've got a few video ideas for sound design...maybe rolling them into one more in depth video would be smart! Thanks for watching!
@@markyounqyeahhh that would be awesome. Or maybe a workshop? 😊
@@markyounq i have a t-8 and s-1 and recently did some templates in google sheets for saving the settings, if you plan on doing more of these videos hit me up i want to work them out and use them more. sort of a copy of the steps and knobs with values to save etc.
@@alebenages745 I would love to do a workshop, but I need to get back on a semi-regular posting schedule before I even consider it...
@@shiggy_447 I'm planning on doing more in the near future. I'd be curious to see what you have going on in Google Sheets -- I don't have the T-8 but that seems like an awesome combo
Hi! Great video! I've tried to replicate this and it's all sounding the same right up the reverb part - once I enable that it all seems to crash together and the reverb totally dominates the sound in a bad way - massively saturates the volume too. Any ideas what could be wrong? EDIT: It's my audio interface being super weird! All fixed now.
Glad you managed to fix it! Thank you for watching
wow!!!! wonderful
Thanks for listening!
So well explained, love you wrote the info on the right!!
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful for you!
I love minimalism. Thank you very much.
Thank you for listening!
What is the power bank you use?
It is the Otterbox 20k mAh
Great wave !
Thank you for demonstrating the S1’s ambient potential 🙏
Thank you!
Has Roland decided to fix the product defect of this unit having no MIDI Volume (CC07)?
Thanks so much for making time to share so much. You’re the best!
Thanks for watching! I'm very glad to help
Lovely work on this Mark !
Thanks so much! I hope it was helpful
Beautiful!! I hope you soon post the how to do it! Can you produce soundscapes on the S1 sounding like Stars of the Lid?🙏
I’ve been watching and learning before I buy. But what about speakers set up. How’s that work, what to use.?
I just use headphones a lot of the time. Mine are Bose QC35 IIs
I am a simple man, I see a deluge, I like & subscibe.
I love this thing! Hoping to get more videos out on it in the near future
One of the recommended videos I got below this one is called Bad Gear and it's about this synthesiser, lol.
The S-1 is ticking all of the boxes...
Thanks for sharing. I have two S-1s and am enjoying making ambient tapestries with the them. But you have tapped into a whole new section of their abilities! I am going to be studying your video.
Thank you for watching! Two S-1s is an interesting setup - are you using two for extra voices or do you patch them differently? You could create some interesting duophonic patches in unison mode which would probably sound really big.
@@markyounq I have tried many experiments. Detuning one in relationship to the other and tweaking them to a variation, like more res or the envelope filter dialed differently, creating a rich texture, and then running every through an Eventide Space Reverb in Shimmer Mode with pitch decay and harmonic fifth spacing. Another experiment is to have the bpm at 40 and the other at 80 bpm (or 60 bpm and 120 bpm). It has an effect similar to playing notes one octave apart, and then doing the Space Reverb.
I recently got a J-6 and am mixing it into one of the S-1s and the combination is creating very good compositions. The J-6 chord progressions actually use some of the effects of the S-1 and this allows the chords to blend with the S-1 sequence very well.
@@Raku777 seems like you're making some awesome sounds! Love to hear it

Hi, I know it might sound stupid, but how did you connect the S1 to the audio interface?
Not a stupid question! In this instance, I'm just running my S-1 into my Zoom F1 and recording straight there. If I wanted to use the Zoom as an audio interface, I would just plug it into my computer using a MicroUSB cable and then you can stream audio from S-1 -> Zoom -> PC
Immense sounds 👌
Thank you! Glad you liked it
