Roland S-1 | Roygbiv - Boards of Canada | Bassline Tutorial
A tutorial for Boards of Canada's Roygbiv bassline performed solely on the Roland S-1. The S-1 is a fantastic compact synth and is inspired by the Roland SH-101, a synth Boards of Canada was known to use often. If you make some improvements to get the sound even closer to the original - I'd be curious to hear about it!

A Roland S-1 recreation the melody of Squarepusher's track "Theme From Ernest Borgnine" performed solely on the Roland S-1. The S-1 is a fantastic compact synth and is inspired by the Roland SH-101, a synth Squarepusher was known to use often. Roland S-1 | Solo performance | using reverb musically demo
A short performance with the Roland S-1 synthesizer. I wanted to do something where I used as many features of the S-1 as I could. So PWM, osc chopping, LFO pitch/ filter wobble, pink noise, delay, reverb, chorus, portamento....etc all went into this patch and I had a lot of fun with it. The patch begins simple with a tip tapping sound from a quick decaying filter envelope using the noise oscil...

Simple composition and arrangement on the Synthstrom Deluge
The Synthstrom Deluge has been taking most of my attention the past month. It's a fantastic groovebox and synthesizer that is more than capable of producing full songs with complex sound design and arrangement. I've been playing around with my Roland S-1 to discover new chord progressions and I came across a trick for playing chords in a unique way. The chord progression in this video is extremely common, but it demonstrates the utility of the S-1. This "trick" uses the step loop function playing pre-programmed chords & voicings set to different steps. I will follow this video up with a more extensive...
Roland S -1 | Interstellar Tutorial | Sound design, pattern programming, & performance

A tutorial for how I created my Interstellar cover on the Roland S-1. The S-1 is a very capable compact synth that gives larger hardware a run for its money. It is battery powered, works great with MIDI controllers (I personally use it with an OP-Z), and most importantly sounds great. I created my Interstellar cover with solely the S-1, as well as many other songs, and I've yet to be let down b...

After waiting four months for my, lost in the mail, OP-Z I finally got it last week and wanted to pair it with my Roland S-1. Today I learned that my S-1 has a lot of hidden features that I didn't know about...
the S-1 is a ton of fun. and this was a great video about it.
Thank you! It is a lot of fun and I'm glad you liked the video. Stay tuned for more!
Yoo this is sick, would love to see you try to replicate one of the soundtracks from dune using the S-1
That's a great idea! Someone else (maybe you?) commented this on another video so it's on my list, but admittedly I'm behind on my planned videos!
Thanks for sharing, learned several things.
Thanks for watching! So glad to hear that
Thank you for your video I was looking forward to seeing it and for your explanations I learn a lot from you. I received the S1 and the J6 and I still have a lot to learn. The J6 seems simpler. With the S1 I'm still having trouble synchronizing it with Ableton Live. Happy new year to you, keep up the good work!
Unfortunately I don't use Ableton so I can't help with that! Do you use the J-6 to control the S-1 or do you use them both as sound sources? Thanks for watching!
@@markyounqThanks for your reply, I bought the J6 and S1 at the same time. I'm just starting out but I find the J6 much easier to use. That's why I prefer to start learning with the more difficult one. Your videos help me a lot. I've tried synchronizing the J6 and S1 but as soon as I press play on one or the other, both start playing... Perhaps there's a mode where you can deactivate this function, which will play only on one of the two devices without both starting up. I hope you've understood. In any case, you've mastered it perfectly.
Amazing
Thank you!
Thank you very much for your video, why do you press the Hold button 5:25 please?
To extend the note to the next step in the pattern! Thanks for watching!
@@markyounq💯
is it worth buying as something to carry around with my roland p 6? It seems kinda limited.. no modulation? I love what you did thogh bra
Sorry for the late response! The S-1 is by far my simplest piece of gear but it's also the one I've finished the most music with. I use it not to create polished layered tracks but to get ideas down and embrace the restrictions. The whole point of these solo S-1 videos is to show these amazing tracks that were created using gear that is ever more limited than the S-1 (e.g. the Sh-101). Thanks for watching!
Sick. Is this a newer mode? Are those fx applied live to tracks
Yep! I can't remember which FW performance view was added, but it's one of my favorite additions to the Deluge
BRAVO 👍
Thank you!!
Super 🎉❤
C’est vraiment incroyable tu as beaucoup de talent bravo 👏 je serai tellement heureux si tu peux nous faire un tutoriel comment tu as réussi à arriver à cette tonalité splendide 🎉❤
Merci beaucoup!
Could you explain a bit more on the hold function? It’s not working as simply on my device as it seems here
Have you updated your FW? I think I recall some people reporting the Hold function not working for them as well. It is meant to hold your note for another step in the pattern. Sorry for the delay in my response!
Simple and stunning 🙏
thank you!
That was awesome! Such a powerful little thing. Must be a whole lot of fun to play.
Thank you! Yes it's a really fun piece of gear
Nice one!
thank you!
👍👍 S-1, T-8, and even J-6 are legend-destined.
I've only used the others in the store, but they really are such a good and affordable set!
@markyounq Absolutely! All worth far more than the money they all cost, imho.
Whooski next plz
I will try!
That was lovely! Thanks!
thanks for listening!
Awesome music!
Thank you!
Very very cool. You play will a lot of the features of the S-1 that I want to learn about. Yes I would like a tutorial about this piece.❤
Nice. I will look up this Squarepusher.
Thanks! I have to admit, not all of his music is for me but a lot of it has grown on me in the past couple years.
He's incredible. Start from his 90s stuff
Hard Normal Daddy is a gem, so many bangers
@@JCDmartel I've been a fan a Squarepusher for a couple decades. Many legendary tracks.
Agreed. Have a deep dive. He has done so much good stuff. Feed Me Weird Things is a gem, I love Hard Normal Daddy, Big Loada, Selection Sixteen and Burningn’n Tree too off the top of my head. Some banging EPs and odd compilation tracks as well. Just don’t get put off easily. Some of it is really bonkers, but his great body of work is well worth exploring. He’s one of the true greats of music.
🎉
fun :)
Thanks :)
I'm really enjoying this series.
Thanks! I've got a few more lined up already but let me know if you have any requests -- tutorial for this one coming soon(
Fantastic video with this in depth explanation. Just got this synth and this tutorial helped a lot (btw how did you record the audio? Just going into an interface?). Also the song re-production is superb. Keep it up!
Thank you! I'm glad to hear my tutorials are helping people. I have the audio out running into a Zoom F1 -- then I either feed it directly into Reaper or just record directly to the Zoom.
awesome!
Thanks for watching!
Lovely stuff
Thank you so much!

thank you for listening!
I can't believe you got that close! Good Job Brother!
thanks! I hope you found it helpful
Thanks!
Just saw this after replying to your other comment -- thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the tutorial, let me know if there are any specific topics or songs you'd be interested in me making a tutorial for.
@ Hi, Mark. You are welcome. I have started to learn a bit of music theory by myself (from books and tutorials on TH-cam) right after I bought the S-1 and then later, the J-8 and the T-8. I also bought a small Arturia keyboard controler. I enjoy learning music this way and finding good sources of information and inspiration is important. Your work certainly adds to this enjoyment. I will let you know if something comes to mind as a topic for a tutorial. Thanks for this offer and everything else.
Hi Mark, this is a very well done tutorial. I have followed it step by step ;) and this is where I really learned how to sequence on the S-1. I also own the J-6 and from what I learned from you, I have now a pattern that plays the harmony in sync with the S-1. All that because of you. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for your kind comment - I'd love to hear it performed with the J-6 as well! I'm working on a few more tutorials right now -- the next one should come out in about a week/week and a half
@@markyounq I’m looking forward to watching the next one you do. I also will try implementing your other tutorials that I’ve been watching for some time. Thank again.
Sounds cool especially after the 3 min mark, good work!
Thanks! I wish I had gotten to that point faster. It really changes up the song
Why is there no support for MIDI Volume (CC07) in the Roland S-1? Did they really screw up this badly? Really? This means that the S-1 cannot be used in an automated mix
Unfortunately, I don't know. I use the S-1, primarily on its own so I haven't run into this issue. If I ever talk to a Roland rep, I'll be sure to bring it up
Can the S-1 do triplets?
It cannot sequence triplets, to my knowledge, but both LFO & arp mode have triplet modes. You can set the envelope to trigger from the LFO, so you can kind of make it work.
Hi Mark, very nice!! How were you able to do that? (if you can reveal the secret xd)
I made a full tutorial on how to make it exactly! You can find it on my channel!
Love what you are doing with the S-1, what an amazing synth.
Thank you! It's a lot of fun in a small package. More tutorials coming in a week or so!
@@markyounqoui j’ai hyper hâte 🎉❤ merci beaucoup
The amount of variation you create is incredible, i picked up a few ideas a to try out watching you. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you - I'm always glad when I can help people learn their synths better!
Yes, a tutorial would be very nice
Good to hear! I'll add it to my to-do list -- thanks!
Incredible what you have done with only one patch and a bar.
Thank you! Often with my S-1, that is my goal -- to maximize what I can do with just a single patch/sequence. Thanks for listening!
When will Roland address the product defect of having no MIDI Volume (CC07)? Roland has not released a MIDI synth in the last 40 years without this essential and fundamental feature. Roland - Please wake up and put it into a firmware update!
Sorry you didn't like it that much! I do feel like I could have done more to break up the pattern, or made some changes faster, so it wouldn't have repeat so many times. Thanks for your input & listening!
This is very cool, it'd be great if you could make a tutorial, thanks!
Thanks for listening to it! I'll try to put together a tutorial soon
Very cool. Love to learn how the patch was done. Thanks.
Thanks! I'll put something together
So cool!! Love your demos, just got an s-1 and this is so helpful
