    If earning serious money means that you need to either produce something or deliver services in a tangible manner, the jobs that do neither feels hollow or less than essential perhaps. What could be considered as façade or tread-milling jobs among this modern society. But life is very intricate like how somebody’s treasure could be another man’s trash (and vice versa), you just don’t know who appreciates your work till it really disappears. So have dignity for whatever profession. It'll become your avocation one day and then it won't be "pointless" anymore.

    You could probably parody any job, a lot of the times in jobs you're really there to keep people honest, stop society falling into chaos etc. Think about it, what did most people learn in the first years of school? Almost nothing, really. Probably socialization/displine was the most important lesson we learned, IMO. But I'm not just picking on teachers. My Father worked most of his adult life at an oil refinery 37 years total (!). It was an easy enough job, they were overstaffed probably three to one, they even had a blow up mattress in the control room so that one out of the three could sleep. Yes it could be dangerous (one worker was killed when a pipe exploded one time), but more or less it was a real Homer Simpson type job- The alarms (to signify overpressure) allowed workers to not pay attention, they then adjusted a knob to reduce pressure. Later on, computers virtually did the monitoring job for them. BUT, they HAD to be there, just in case something went wrong, there was a fire etc (they were trained as firefighters too).

    If 30~40% of jobs are bullshit jobs and we have high unemployment and underemployment, does that not mean that if we reduced the work shift durations (for jobs that don't REQUIRE long shifts, of course) by 50% (4hrs/day) and eliminated bullshit jobs, we'd have reduced unemployment and underemployment while also reducing bullshit jobs?

    • @TheLouisZhao
      @TheLouisZhao 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes that's a great point. Evidence does suggest that our economy can be maintained with reduced overall work hours assuming no one is doing pointless work. Japan actually tried to change their work days to 4 days a week but very few companies went with it. It seems we need a cultural shift about work in order to achieve this.

    I used to work for an insurance company. They used to promise that we could make 40,000 a year, but it was physically impossible to even get half that. It was so ridiculous. Any time someone wanted a homeowners policy, it was like pulling teeth to get a pathetic $50 commission. Constant phone calls to clarify what roof someone had, what rooms they had, and so much nonsense of endless calls with the customer, and then you had to sit down with the supervisor at the end and waste time on Google to see if you can find pictures of their house online. And then 3 days later, the inspector screws it all up because he found a hot tub or extended deck in the back of the house and then you have to start all over again. Worst job I ever had, I now make six figures working for myself, creating physical things with my own hands and not some bs product or service.

    What you are actually describing, is the relational nature of the human mind. Like you described how you get stressed, is by comparing yourself to others. This is the stress of fear of loss of relationship. You do all these things to be part of the group, you compare yourself to others and think if you do not do all these things, you would not be accepted. And not being accepted would signal loss of relationship, and the most dangerous situation possible of being alone. Your dog would also become scared if you the relationship to his owner would be in danger. But your dog does not evaluate its relationship based on the same metrics as you do. Your dog instead follows your orders and does not transgress you, in order to keep the relationship. This is psychoanalysis, object relations theory. It also explains people who are not able to stop thinking, its called obsessive neurosis.
