- It’s the beginning of the Thor’s greatest epic, the Ragnarok story featuring Mangog, the greatest existential threat to Asgard and the universe. Host Tom Scioli (author of Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre) talks about this historic comic book that was partly the reason Tom wanted to become a comics creator in the first place. It was this story that also inspired the creation of this THORsday comics series.

They could of at least offered Thor a joint.😎
The three Hippies were remodeled by Herb Trimpe. Trimpe worked in the production department at Marvel back then, as well as freelance penciling and inking. My guess as to why could be that Stan wanted them to look more hostile and Mansonish because nicer hippies wouldn't have given Thor shit about everything except his hair and "guru" outfit. .
This issue was published in 1968 and the Tate-LaBianca murders didn't happen until the following year. No one at Marvel on the East Coast would have known who Manson was.
The beatnik vs hippie talk was really interesting.
The Mangog saga was my favorite Thor series. I couldn’t wait for each issue to come out.
I have immensely enjoyed your series of Thorsday videos, thank you for all your hard work and dedication. This issue with Ulik and the introduction of Mangog is certainly a landmark. I cannot believe we only have 24 more Kirby Thor issues to go. I'm a generation older than you since when He-Man came out I was in my final year of high school. I was reading Thor comics almost since I started to read in first grade and my introduction was with John Buscema and Stan Lee with issue 201. I knew Kirby had started before (I used to watch the 60s cartoon re-runs too) but somehow my appreciation of Kirby's art (and how much input he had in the creation of Thor) didn't hit until later. As an artist myself interested in bodybuilding and anatomy Buscema was so superior but later I realized how groundbreaking and ahead of everyone Kirby was. You just need to listen to Buscema speaking about Kirby and how influential in his way to pace, tell a story and panel design was Kirby in his own work. I know you, rightfully so, concentrate on Kirby but it is obvious you love the character of Thor and the entire Marvel mythology like I do. I hope you continue after Kirby leaves with your Thorsday series. As I grew up with Stan Lee first and then Gerry Conway in the book who I consider to be an excellent writer. Conway is a pancreatic cancer survivor and keeps a blog he has semi-active. I wish you could bring him as a guest interview to your channel. His work on Thor never gets discussed enough, its always Spider-man and the Punisher, you can find some information in Kirby Collector and Alter-Ego but not enough. I love how Conway inherited this beautiful rich tapestry of modern mythology from Lee and Kirby with pristine continuity and characterization and how well he and John Buscema ran with it. The team up with Hercules, the stories with Ego, Mephisto, Pluto, Galactus, the Destroyer, the introduction of Firelord, the return of Jane Foster, Odin's self exile to earth are some of the highlights from the comic from my childhood I never forget !
Great memories Simon. Thanks for sharing them.
Well stated
That whole sequence where Thor does his "it's not by dropping out but by plunging into the maelstrom of life" speech I remember clearly from back then, though I'm 70 now. But I'd forgotten the "the true guru thou seekest doth lie within thyselves" part. I wish I'd taken that to heart before I spent so many years exploring Eastern mysticism as so many of us did in those days!
"Dropping out" was reference to Tim Leary saying, "Drop out, turn on tune in." speech.
@@tomboughan2718 I know, I was aware of that back then. I ended up doing quite a bit of the "turn on" part myself.
I have to thank you Mr. Scioli for your incredible Thor videos. I am a big Thor collector and other than reading my comics, watching your videos is, literally, the best thing in my life. I work from home and take care of an elderly relative who lives with me 24 hours a day (and have done so for two years). I am grateful to be able to care for her but it is very stressful - that's where your videos come in. It is like hanging out with a comics buddy, but one who is so much smarter than my friends - and one who possesses such unmatched insight into my favorite comics. So, please accept my sincere thanks for your amazing videos. They make a positive difference in my life.
I am always amazed at how people first experience comics and then connect it with the entertainment we consumed as kids.
I experienced these things in a linear fashion so it's always interesting to see someone else's journey!
This is amazing, Tom. The Mangog saga is my favorite Thor story. I read it first in my 30s, and it completely blew my mind just as it did you as a 10 year old.
Certainly makes it better to see this from the eyes of a kid encountering Kirby for the first time. Notice how Karnilla has been changing. Her more angular, witchlike physiognomy is already softening and pretty soon she's going to look younger and sexier.
I came across two old 12 cent mangog comics as a kid. He was destroying Asgard and i didn’t get to see how it ended until much later. I was really afraid of mangog
Great stuff Tom, thanks for the trip down memory lane!
This is my first time seeing your videos but I can really relate. I found that Treasury edition for a decent price I don't remember the number but not much more than you, it was the early90s when their was a resurgence of Kirby admiration. I had been taking a second look at his art ,my initial encounters was early mid 80s and I didn't appreciate his brilliance at the time. But I was also blown away with this story, the oversize volume gave a more cinematic view his work almost demanded, it did change my view of comics was changed forever
That Marvel Treasury was my introduction to Thor as well. A fantastic way to first encounter both Thor and his creator, Jack Kirby. Like you I’m still a big fan of the Magog saga.
You had some interesting ASMR thing going with the audio today. Love your enthusiasm at the Thor stories, this one included!
The Thor character in Adventures in Babysitting was Vincent D'Onofrio.
Fun fact: He did Full Metal Jacket in the same year.
Great one, Tom. Hope you get to do Asgardian DD someday.
I'm thinking Marie Severin redrew those hippies...
When Tom started mentioning the hippies and the original art, I thought he was going to say Thor encountered 6 hippies, but Vinnie erased half of them to save on the inking chores.
The Super Powers show has definitely had a greater influence on Kalibak's characterization in subsequent media than the original Kirby New Gods comics.
The vault opening and Mangog stepping out is like Cthulhu being freed in "The Call of Cthulhu."
Yay
Scoks ? With sandals. Balderdash
I lived in a hippie commune in 1970 when I was six. Jack and Stan were right on. Hippies were and are flakes.
Most were, but not all.
I always thought it was funny when characters like Thor would meet kazar. Or doc Samson given there similar aesthetic.
Were they acknowledging that hella Fenrir slaknir etc are the off spring of Loki
There to giant who have no hearts
Or there’s hearts are housed some where else for safe keeping.
In side if an egg inside of a duck on a lake on top of a mountain. This renders the giants immortal. There names are gog and magog. They were tricky to slay. The legend has spread into other giant lore. They may actually be the off spring of a human and an angle
The dark side is always there

There is a were tendency in media from the past. Probably a carryover from the 50s. If know minority was around. To pick on the next best thing to an other. Youth. There was even a stab at young people in the movie with heavy conservation vibe. Godzilla vs the smog monster. Though there is a lot of killing in the movie. Youth culture was the Canon fodder. A sort of that’s what they get for being idiots vibe. The protagonist from let sleeping corpses lie. Every on he meets in his travels makes that your kind comment because he has long hair.
This is my impression of callaback as presented on Saturday morning. He reminded me of the son of Buford T justice from Smokey and the bandit. Lol. It’s probable a bad idea to present a bad ass character on an adventure show on sat morning. There is a lot of politics and censorship and in some cases pseudoscience or let’s say fake child psychology that gose into satarday morning shows. Some shows did better on after school syndication like the thunderCats and Transformers. Example is the real Ghostbusters who had a Saturday morning spot and after school syndication. Both versions feel vastly different. The Fox kids xmen is a joke and is an example of being fed garbage right off the bat. You like it but it could be better
Beatniks and hippies
Goths and emo’s
