Joshua Tree National Park | Sunrise | Landscape Photography
For this trip, I travel back to Joshua Tree National Park near Palm Springs in California. This is an amazing place with a variety of desert landscapes. Created in 1994, it makes it one of the newer parks in the National Park system. It’s desert landscape, strange rock formation, and grand vistas make this a popular destination - especially in spring and fall.
I started with sunrise in the Cholla Cactus Garden on the southern side of the park, and then moved further north to the area around Arch Rock and beyond. The conditions held-off just enough to give me some excellent opportunities before the rain started right after I finished.

Columbia National Wildlife Refuge | Wildlife | Ice Age Flood Terrain
มุมมอง 2006 หลายเดือนก่อน
For this video, I travel to eastern Washington state to the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is located within the Drumheller Channels - which are a central part of the story of ice age floods that inundated eastern Washington. These floods - more than 100 in total - were part to the story of Glacier Lake Missoula and the ice age floods that ripped across the area from Montana at ...
Winter Waterfalls | Challenging Wet Conditions | Snoquerna Falls
มุมมอง 243ปีที่แล้ว
Snoquerna Falls is located in the White River Valley in Pierce County Washington. I had to deal with some pretty challenging conditions - to include rain, snow, ice and exposure. The hike to the falls is pretty straightforward - with parking at the Camp Sheppard trailhead. When I left the parking lot, it was right at freezing, 32F, but as I increased in elevation, the temperature also increased...
Backcountry Cooking | Early Winter | Trangia 27 with Gas Burner
มุมมอง 7Kปีที่แล้ว
For this video, I head back to the Carbon River just outside Mount Rainier National Park. Instead of landscape or wildlife photography, I break out my Trangia 27 Cook System to make some lunch during a snowstorm. I explain the various components of the Trangia system - and for this episode use the "gas adapter" to use a standard gas cylinder vs the traditional alcohol burner. The winter conditi...

In this video I venture to the upper White River valley just outside Mount Rainier National Park. This area is easily accessible and usually a treat regardless of the season, but I expect the winter snows will blanket this area in the coming weeks so this was my last opportunity. I was able to find some contrast in the trees with some challenging compositions. I also ended the morning with some...
Heavy Snow Winter Camping | Photography | Pulk Sled | Mazama Ridge
มุมมอง 2.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I am returning to Mazama Ridge at Mount Rainier National Park. This has become an annual trip for me - as this is my third year going here in the winter to photograph. For this trip, I departed Paradise with a mix of clouds and sun but managed a significant change in the weather later in the day with heavy snow, wind and cold temperatures (18F / -8C). While I was forced to shelter in the tent d...

In this video, I am with Morten Hilmer to photograph birds at Mount Rainier National Park. We had been photographing wildlife in Yellowstone National Park the prior week, and came to Mount Rainier to capture some birds on a gorgeous winter day. I was overdue to do some ski touring this winter. I have wanted to check-out the Nordic Center at White Pass for quite some time, so I decided on a mid-week trip to avoid the crowds. There was light snow when I started, but it gave way to party sunny skies with intermittent clouds. I stopped at a summer horse camp for some coffee - using my Trangia Spirit Burner and Trangia Triangle Stove. Skis...
Winter Camping | Landscape Photography | Pulk Sled | Mount Rainier National Park

I really wanted to start 2021 off with a trip to the winter backcountry. One of my favorite places to go is Mazama Ridge in Mount Rainier National Park. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated disruptions, there has been a significant increase in visitation to our National Parks. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. To lessen my impact and to add to my solitude, I opted to go on a...

Lovely scenery, I am especially impressed with the long distance shot of you snowshoeing in up the mountain - that's a long way to walk to place a camera unless you have a drone. i run into newbies all the time on the trail who don't carry any type of emergency gear except a cell phone and maybe an energy bar or two... the trail runner crowd is the worst for this, most of those people don't carry anything at all thinking they will always make it back to the car... once, i was 7 miles up a trail and ran into a girl with an empty water bottle, she asked me where the nearest water faucet was... i'm not making this stuff up, it really does happen.
