  • For this trip, I venture on a four-hour drive to the North Cascades. Given this is a holiday weekend, there are massive crowds at the Rainy Pass Trailhead for the Heather Maple Pass loop. Managing this amount of people is a challenge in any time, but during the COVID-19 pandemic it is especially challenging. While most had face coverings and wore them, some did not. Keeping physically distanced on the trail wasn’t too much of a challenge, so the overall exposure seems low.
I was rewarded with really nice light on some distant larch trees, and the late afternoon view of Lake Ann was very nice.

Great shots of the larch. Enjoyable video. It is funny how good a freeze dried meal tastes on the side of a mountain.

Thanks. It was a unique experience with all the people. Challenge to stay responsible and distant, but most people were very accommodating.

Your first two photos I think are my favorite photos I’ve seen of yours. The backlit light and the mixture of colors is really great.

Thanks! I hope you are doing well. The amount of people on this trip were crazy, but its good to see everyone wanting to get out and experience nature. The larch trees were really nice and the contrast of colors did make for some nice photos. Stay safe.

Nice video Tim. I told a friend that Heather/Maple pass is becoming the North Cascades version of the Snow Lake hike. It seems like everyone has to be up there now. I'm curious how many times did you have to move your tripod once you had it set up? I could hear people talking in some of your shots and then saw the folks standing down the trail from you. Hopefully it wasn't too much of an issue. Thanks for posting. Steve R.

If one is looking for solitude, better to go mid-week. Move the tripod - with all of the outtakes - maybe 10 times! :o Not an issue - everyone has equal right to be there.
