Those who keep complaining about this knew what you meant by this; it's these type of pedantic comments that make Rock Snobs so insufferable. Keep up the great work.
I think the guy being quoted was referring to how John was during the recording of this album. Obviously on by the way, he was using all kinds of effects
This album is mainly distortion, chorus, and wah. 3 pedals doesn't make him a pedal guy. Unless you're talking about a different album than the one this video is about lol.
great video! love to see how the techniques were used back in the day ]:) so much dry and they let more to the guys "if it sounded good, leave it like that"
The final mix of this album was little too compressed imo…there was another version I heard (the front cover was green instead of orange) that was an uncompressed version, which sounded amazing. Everything was so much clearer and you could hear all the nuances on the playing. Great album.
If you wanna pull at hairs, Jack Sherman was their guitarist on their debut album along with the supporting tour, not Hillel. Hillel and Jack Irons chose What Is This over the Chili Peppers thinking that band had a better shot. So the first record we got Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez on the first 2 records. We got Hillel for 2 records and Jack Irons for 1.
The reason the album is so narrow and mono is because Jim Scott sent almost every instrument to a single STA-level compressor. That piece of gear baked everything together nicely and is a huge part of the overall sound.
I can't stand errors like these. It always feels like the video has been created with little to no effort. However we all are humans we make mistakes but this mistake would have been avoided by checking Wikipedia or something. Takes two minutes. Jeez.
@@tk-hf4oz I think you'd be surprised how much effort actually goes into making a video. My primary aim with these is to document methods of recording for engineers and producers. I was aware he wasn't their first guitarist and by 'original' member I meant original member of the classic line up so the semantics are a little off for sure , just an honest mistake.
@@mixingmasteringonline, even so, you can surely understand that without qualification, if you state he was an original member, then people are going to take that, quite reasonably, as being a founding member.
I would love to watch a video from this channel about Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I already watched Funky Monks documentary several times but it would be nice to know deeper on the technicality
I'm still oddly bitter at how weird and bad this album sounds. I get the vibe they were going for, but one person's "raw" is another person's "unpolished". IMO, Californication sounds kinda trashy. Wishful thinking, but IMAGINE how amazing this album would have been, if Brendan OBrien was behind the boards, and it was recorded back at the Laurel Canyon mansion. The songs of Californication, with the sonics of BSSM...
It's raw but has an overly compressed mix/master. I think the song writing and playing really shines through, but yeah, a bit of polish would have worked nicely
I remember listening to One Hot Minute when it was released, and thinking it was a decent album, but of course, it got a bunch of bad reviews by a bunch of sad little people.
One hot minute is an excellent album. My friends was one of my favorite sons in my teenage years. I liked Aeroplane as a kid. It is a lot darker than later albuns.
The worst mastering/recording I have in my CD collection. Because of RIck Rubin's idiotic idea of digital over compressing sound, this album has a tremendous amount of audio distortion. If you have a revealing hi-fi system you will get pissed off after a few minutes of listening to the crackling noises.
All that shit John would talk about being a great musician for him to be in a band with someone who uses autotune. You can hear it really bad on by the way too.
Better is obviously your opinion and not represenative of the majority. Check the number of views on all the songs of your favorite album vs. the views of the songs on the Californication album. Most of the OHM songs can't even reach 1M views😂
I'm aware John Frusciante wasn't their first guitarist, by 'original' member I meant original member of the classic line up.
I understood. People just like thinking they know more 😒

Yes, he’s not………………………………………………………not 😂
I think the guy being quoted was referring to how John was during the recording of this album. Obviously on by the way, he was using all kinds of effects
@@tastelesstouchwrong all around. This guy has had one of the biggest pedal boards since the late 80’s!
I think he referred the fact he didn't use to many pedals at the same time at least in that period/recording session

Suggestion, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness!
Great suggestion!
YES!
If you're taking requests... ;)
NIN's The Fragile would be an epic! 2yrs of Alan Moulder and Trent Reznor sequestered. Brilliant!

yeeeeah
Love this channel so much! Thank you guys!!!
Thank you! Really happy to know its appreciated.😀
Another banger, brother! Cheers!
Thank you!
John Frusciante was not the original guitar player. Hillel Slovak was.
Yeah, it's even more complicated than that
Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons were founding members, but they didn't even play on their debut album, which lets face it was, and still is, horrendous.
Was about to post this, dude lost his credibility 10 seconds into the video.
If you wanna pull at hairs, Jack Sherman was their guitarist on their debut album along with the supporting tour, not Hillel. ah yes, John "not really a pedal guy" Frusciante
His pedalboard for the Californication tour just had distortion, fuzz, phaser, wah, and chorus. At that time, that was true.
It’s a masterpiece
The reason the album is so narrow and mono is because Jim Scott sent almost every instrument to a single STA-level compressor. That piece of gear baked everything together nicely and is a huge part of the overall sound.
Amazing video!

"Original member John Frusciante". Damn, we're off to a great start 😂

Thank you, really glad you enjoyed it! 😃
I thought for sure flea used a fuzz pedal for all around the world. That’s wild that it was just how he played to make it sound that way.
One Hot Minute is my favourite album. The guitar is smooth, bass and drum tight. Lots of Color . Californication is my second favourite
Great presentation! than you.
Thank you!
JF wasn't an "original member" as stated at 0:10
Can one more person please let us know that John wasn’t an original member?
😂
Please do By the way album
5:20 "John is not a pedal guy" see how that turned out
That is what the engineer said on that time when John just used 4 o 5 pedals
@ yeah he was not crazy with pedals but I think it all started with BTW. John let his creativity speak there
😂
Is there a slide solo on the track "Easily"?
Sounds like he’s bending the string rather than a slide.
I would love to watch a video from this channel about Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I already watched Funky Monks documentary several times but it would be nice to know deeper on the technicality
I'd really like to do that one, I'll be looking into it..

Talk about coming back even bigger than you originally were.

He’s not an original member. I know other people have stated this, but i wanted to reiterate it.
Why

John isn't an original member.
yeah guys let's have one more person comment how john isn't an original member, all at once please
I’m pretty sure he wasn’t an original member! 😅
Hey! Slovic was the original! I hate everything and everyone!
Guys come on...Hillel is a technicality. He was no syd and didn't have the magic John did
Hillel Slovak was the original guitar player
Jack Sherman first album though
@@jimwhite4270 yes sorry forgot that
Jeff Buckley - Grace or slipknot would be a good one
Cheers, going on the list! Grace is already on there. Really looking forward to doing that one.

He ripped Corpse Party 98 Soundtrack 09 (it came out in 1996.. dont believe me? Look it up :)
Cool! I hadn't heard this.

Not to mention Californication was purely released in mono.
I'm tired of Rick Rubin screwing up masterpiece albums.
Also Frusciante wasn't an "original member". Far from it. By my count, he was their third guitarist.
True, more ‘like classic line up’ member.
one hot minute was so gay...thought we lost them forever
"he's not really a pedal guy" - ha! if not he, who???
John Frusciante is not even remotely an original member.
True, more ‘like classic line up’ member.
He was on the memorable and well known stuff. 'nuff said.
just sad its so awfully mastered

their earlier records are so much better. Newer stuff is just not for me. Its pretty bland imo
After that guy ditched them in Japan I lost all respect.
It’s a great record that sounds like shit thanks to the mastering job. It’s really unlistenable.
Needs a remix/remaster.
One hot minute > any album recorded with Frusciante afterwards
This album killed their potential!
„Raw energy“ on Californication…? It‘s the epitome of lukewarm pop music…
