Beautiful Fall Garden Makeover | Seasonal Color & Decor in My Carolina Garden
I have just finished a beautiful Fall garden makeover and I can't wait for you to see it! I have added seasonal color & decor in My Carolina Garden, using some clearance plants, some DIY project items, and flowers I already had in my yard. I added some new mums and some sweet potato vine. The flowerbed I worked on is my rock garden, and I couldn't be more proud!
My name is Nicole Roggeman and My Carolina Garden is located in coastal North Carolina, in growing zone 8B. I hope you enjoy my new Fall flowers and the changes I'm beginning to make! Actually, while I used to have gorgeous Peonies when I lived in NY, I've been in coastal NC for 10 years now and have had little to no success with them here. Hopefully you find other plants you're interested in where I can actually be of some help!! 😃

    How pretty & fresh your garden looks! We have the same taste in plants & flowers, have an inground pool & going for that tropical vibe. (salt is in our blood.) 🌴🌸 I also have 3 palm trees around the pool. I am in middle GA same zone as you & the heat & dryness has been a nightmare this summer for us. I can barely keep up the watering. I have to say it always looks like things are barely making it if they are getting a lot of sun. Thankful for the few shade trees we have. I, too, have issues with those leaf rollers in my cannas to the point I dug most of mine up & gave them away…except for my bengal tiger favorite. I potted some of it up & that seemed to help keep the leaf rollers out. (I’ve gotten to where if I have constant problems with a plant, I get rid of it.) I love your concrete pelican. I have one, too!❤ I have a Bougainvillea (variegated) that I overwinter in the garage along with my plumeria, tropical hibiscus, collection of crown of thorns & a couple of philodendron plants. Sometimes I’ll run a heater when the temps get below 40. Ok, I need some elephant ears. Wow, yours are happy! Thank you for the lovely tour! You’ve given me some ideas. ❤ Your new gardening friend🌻😊

      I am so thankful to have gotten your message! It's nice to talk to people who have a similar gardening style, and it's nice that we're in the same zone! I really feel for you with the heat & dryness. The first half of the year here it barely rained. And the sun is so intense, it feels like you'll never keep your plants alive. We installed drip irrigation this year and it changed my life. I 100% agree, if a plant has too many problems or is hard to care for, I don't want it. I love beautiful things, but they have to be easy, too. 😁🌺

      First, thank you! ❤️ Secondly, my biggest piece of advice when thinking about the layout of your tropical garden, keep the size of things like jumbo elephant ears in mind 😂 Seriously, I love how mine came together, but my elephant ears are bigger than I expected for my space. Have a great day! 🍁🌺

  • @texastropics

    The Cordyline australis you have is the one sold most commonly as "Red Star". Cordylines are a long term zone 9 plant, with the standard green form being the hardiest. The more colorful they are the less hardy they tend to be. 25F is about as low as the colored ones can go without sustaining damage, so I assume you haven't had too cold a winter. I have had them die to the ground and come back in spring with temps as low as 19F. These are proper trees, so it's very interesting that you took one of the branches (not a pup) and were able to propagate it.

      @JudySeidle Hi Judy! Awe I love that you got some yucca to enjoy! I also love that it produces pups to make the cost even more worth it! Ah yes, you do what you can... it's always something in the garden 😁 Have a great day!

    Great points made at the end of this video! I love dianthus but had a hard time growing this year but I will try again because the beautiful red color was stunning.

    Is the Vermillionaire a perennial for you? I’m in zone 8a and have mine in containers because I didn’t think they would survive winters in the ground.

    • @mycarolinagarden
      @mycarolinagarden 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @pd5244 yes I've had mine in the ground for years now. I understand they're hardy zones 8+, so we're on the line. I mulch the root area, but honestly, have never done anything special with them.

    I have to ask about weeds.. do you use weed barriers ?

    • @mycarolinagarden
      @mycarolinagarden 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't use weed barriers. I find the mulch breaks down and weeds love to grow right on top of the barrier, so it's pointless in my opinion. I'm a weed picker. Like I do it when I'm having coffee, or just want to daydream. My biggest weed problem is dollarweed - super hard to get rid of.

    Your garden is beautiful & I fell your upset over deer pressure. I have it so bad since I live in the country. I’ve had to rethink everything I plant. They enjoyed all the roses on my rose bush because I had ran out of spray. But it’s all ok they’ll bloom again next year & I’ll stock up on spray. Thanks for the tour

    Empathize with you Nicole! My garden is a buffet for the deer. I am also in coastal NC ..same zone. I am learning the only plants they don’t like are my many Cannes Lilies,Butterfly bushes, Zinnias …lol unless they are super hungry), Veronica plant and of course Marigolds! Argh!! Love your vids! :)

      @gillyanne4019 argh - so frustrating! They also don't seem to touch my Blanket Flowers, even though I could use the help deadheading 😅 Seriously though, it's always something in the garden. Thanks so much for your message! 😁

      We were crazy people and fashioned a weird pulley system to get it into our pickup truck 🤪 I made a video about it last summer, something about an insane garden share, I think. 😂 My family all knows how crazy I am for big rocks, so they were all in on it 😅❤️

    I really like your grasses. I'm trying to move things around and come up with a better layout. Once I do that I want to start adding more grasses. You are making me want to go buy more mums!! LOL I'm definitely adding more blanket flowers next year. Just seeing all yours still blooming like they are is so nice. Having color in the gardens this time of the year is awesome! I think I bought the most sterile crepe myrtles in the world. I would love for mine to have babies, but in the 15 years I have had them, not one, seriously not even one! :D

      @sharonhart1232 Holy cow, no crape Myrtle babies in 15 years!? That's so crazy, even my wonky one gives me babies. 🤪 The garden can keep you guessing, no doubt about it! I support you adding more blanket flowers 😁🌼 Seriously though, it IS nice to have late-season color.

    Did your Dragon's Breath perk up? I want to do the same with my dragon's breath popping up in weird areas, like cracks in the driveway! Love this video, I need to catch some of your enthusiasm!

      Yes, the Dragon's Breath perked up! Took about 2 days of watering, but now it's standing on it's own lol. So funny how it pops up in random spots like driveway cracks, but luckily it's a color we can identify as something to keep! 😁 Thanks so much for your message - I appreciate it!
