Bringing Plants Inside for Winter | Overwintering Tropical Plants

- Bringing plants inside for Winter is sad. Now there's no avoiding the fact that the gardening season is over, and plants need to be taken care of in a more temperate environment. Today I'll be overwintering tropical plants like Dipladenia and Tropical Hibiscus, as well as removing pups from plants like Kalanchoe, cabbage and mangave.
You've seen me plant Mandevilla or Dipladenia (it's true, I interchange the words even though I shouldn't) in the waterfall in my poolside gardens, and now it's time to remove them. *Sigh*...
My name is Nicole Roggeman, and I garden in zone 8B in coastal North Carolina. Even with a more mild climate here in Wilmington NC, I still have to take tender plants indoors or bring them into my greenhouse when the temperature drops to around 40 degrees consistently.
I'm not done sharing garden inspiration or gardening tips even though the gardening season has come to an end. Stick with me and My Carolina Garden as we journey on with more projects in the garden, making garden decor, root new plants, and talk about overwintering others.

Your collection of “free plants “is gorgeous! I do not like cold weather either! What do we do when we get sad because our gardening time is slower? Go buy plants! I always buy pansies up to December and sometimes some small evergreens to put in my garden here in SC! You should do a segment soon by getting ideas from your viewers on ideas to bring happiness in our winter months!🙌🏼Have a great day!
What a great video idea - how to bring happiness to a gardener's life in the winter. Love it! You're so right - buying plants is the therapy I go for, too. Thanks so much for your message! Have a great day! 😁❤
Thanks! You're doing a great job!!!🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Thank you for this sweet message!!! 😁❤

Very interesting...and useful!!!❤
Great to hear - thanks so much for your message!
Hi Nicole, You got a massive workout today!! Sorry you have to store in your house and then move them again. Hope the greenhouse will be restored soon. great video. 🌺🥰🌺
I appreciate this - I know, nothing like a little extra work. But it will all get done soon and then I'll be crying that it's winter 😂 Have a great day! 😁❤
Hi Nicole🌺 . You worked hard and you are amazing how you take care of these plants in winter if you cover the mandevilla in winter it ,can survive . How beautiful is the banana I will plant one in my garden . Have a bless day .🌻🎄🌻
Thank you for your kind message, as always. Since the bottom of my waterfall is empty (for storage) I was afraid the roots would freeze from the bottom. At least digging these up was pretty easy. Have a wonderful day! 😁❤
I look forward to winter. I like taking advantage of a rest period (after I get all the leaves blown into the garden beds) & especially not having to water. Omg at the watering I had to do this summer!
That's absolutely fair. It's definitely great to get a rest period after so much work all gardening season. Watering is such a huge job!!! Took me 25 years, but adding drip irrigation this year was amazing. Not sure if that's possible for you at all, but I do feel your pain. Have a great rest of the day!!
Hi Nicole love your baby bananas. You’ve inspired me & I’ve learned so much. I have harvested seeds from my vinca & echinacea & am propagating coleus. I’ve also repotted several plants & brought in my house to overwinter in my garden tub 😂(finally a good use for it). I always watch your channel first & it’s so refreshing to see a channel that’s about saving money. Great job 👏
Awe, this message put a big smile on my face!! First, I appreciate the support and kind words. And it makes me super happy to hear you've learned a thing or 2 from me. But your comment about the garden tub - you know I relate!!!! 😂 Thanks so much for writing! Have a great day!!
Those baby bananas!!
😂 Your messages give me a good chuckle. I know what you mean about not having the desire to get out and do things sometimes. That's the only good thing I want to say about winter - it forces us to rest up a bit after a long growing season. Red and yellow are awesome, dynamic colors!! Have a great rest of the day!!
hi nicole, great video. i love the banana's on the tree. i have a tree but, i have never had any banana's on it. i'm going to try and overwinter some of my plants this year. maybe they will make it. lol thanks for sharing with us. hope you have a great day!!!
This is the first year I've had so many bananas. Last year I had 2 smaller bunches, but the trees are about 7ish years old, so it took a while lol.
Overwintering some things is worth a try - you never know what you might be able to save. Have a great day!! 😁❤
@@mycarolinagarden hi nicole, i just went out and check my banana tree and i have baby banana's. i proble would have never check but by watching your video i check. thank you for all of your tips and info. i am so happy. not exactly sure how long i have had mine. thank you again.

That is so fun!! 😁😁
💨🍃
Those bananas are amazing !!!
Thanks! A nice fun treat to have them! 😁
Un film de calitate!!!
Nicole, I am in Charlotte NC and I had banana trees for the first time this summer, not sure when I am supposed to cut them down.
@joannepifer4505 Hi there! Not sure about you in Charlotte, but we just got our first hard frost last night. The foliage on the banana trees turned brown as today went on. At this point, you can cut the foliage off at any point, the only thing I recommend is to not cut the trunks to the ground. Cut them to the height the foliage was coming out of. This way, in the spring, new leaves will emerge from that same height 💚
@ thanks Nicole, I also heard you should cut them at an angle so the water doesn’t pool at the top
@joannepifer4505 honestly, I'm not that particular myself. I've had them now for about 6 years, and I just cut them as I see fit without much worry. Some people cover theirs for Winter, but I've never done that and I've grown so many, I've had to give many away.
@@mycarolinagarden thanks a lot!! Love your videos!!
Guess I should have waited for today’s video. Lol
Hey, Nicole.I'm here and sneeze ferry.I know that you guys are in North Carolina. Can we use lemon cypress outside
Hi! I haven't had one myself, but they should be perfect here! They thrive in zones 7-10 and we're 8b, so that's a great match. Just give it plenty of light 😊
Do you have a cutting of the tickle pickle coleus I will pay for or tell ,me where to get thanks Judy
@judywright5424 I will absolutely let you know when I see it again! I made one successful propagation, but my parent plant doesn't look like it's going to make it. I'll keep to posted.
