  • Hi there and welcome to my October Garden Tour of My Carolina Garden, back yard. We're still feeling a bit summery here in Southeastern North Carolina. Temps haven't fully dropped by the time I filmed this video, so you'll still lots of tropical plants and flowers adorning my back yard.
    I have a mix of more tender perennials, as well as tougher ones that are more cold-hardy planted in my various flower beds. I am enjoying blooming Dahlias, Mandevilla, and Dianthus, as well as lots of buds on my Camellia!!
    My name is Nicole Roggeman and My Carolina Garden is located in Wilmington, NC in growing zone 8B. I hope you enjoy my back yard garden tour for October, and are getting through the wacky weather we've been experiencing alright! Fun garden tour! Loved all your plants. Thank you. Like you, I enjoy the creeping Jenny even more when it gets a darker color. Such a great and hardy plant to have in the garden. Happy growing! 👌🪴🥰

    Looking good Nicole! Love that you had a cabbage plant live for all the seasons for a year. Montauk daisies get leggy over the years…not sure how to correct that problem❣️

      Honestly, I don't really love the Montauk daisies. I mean they're fine, but not a fave. So... if they have to go, no biggie. Yes, the cabbage was a nice surprise!!! 😄

    Your gardens are still looking great, Nicole! I’m not looking forward to winter when everything looks so sparse. 😕

      Hi! I'm determined to figure out how to solve the canna problem. Next year when our growth starts fresh we'll have the answer to avoid the same fate as this year. Enjoy your weekend and thanks so much for writing!

    I've never tried growing the decorative cabbage so that was interesting to find out. I keep forgetting about my purple hearts I have in a planter, I am going to get them in the ground today lol

      Haha - I know the feeling, there's so much to remember and think about, sometimes things fall through the cracks. Purple Heart can take it though 💜

    Instead of backing off from fall gardening chores, I'm having to water again because it's been so dry. Also I am still planting clearance plants, but I love the sales. I am looking forward to seeing your greenhouse space and how you arrange your plants inside.

      It's tiring continuing to water, isn't it? It's been dry here also so I understand. So good to hear you're finding and planting clearance plants! That keeps the excitement going 😊 Have a great day!

    Hi Nicole , your garden still looks beautiful & colorful. Here in zone 7 it’s getting cold & there’s not much color left in my garden but it’s good weather for my garden clean up.

      I hear you, color begins to drop away, but the weather for working outside is better. Checks and balances in the gardening life. Thank you for your kind message!

    Hi Nicole I absolutely love the yuletide Camilla, I have a Camilla, but it blooms in late February thru March and is a deep pink almost red. Your garden still looks great in fall. I'm zone 7b, already had to pull out long pants and sweatshirts but supposed to be warmer next week so maybe I can get a lot of clean up on my beds done. This old body can't take the cold like it used to. Looking forward to where you decide to put your new plants.🥀👖🍁

      Thanks so much for your message! Our temperatures have been very up and down recently, so while it felt like summer that day, today is freezing. Here's to hoping the weather is beautiful for the work you want to do ❤️

    Gorgeous to look at as usual. You’ve had a great growing year. One question don’t think I’ve asked maybe you have covered is how often do you fertilize your mandevilla & dipladania plants. They just so many thick and intense red blooms

    • @mycarolinagarden
      @mycarolinagarden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! 😊 I would say bi-weekly for the most part. I don't keep a fertilization schedule, so it's not exact. The red has really done great!! The yellow i had last year and this and it's much less full. Not sure of the reason.

      @@mycarolinagarden I tried yellow too and you are right does not bloom as full. Not sure why. I was able to pick up a couple that are a orange peach color in 1 gallon containers and will repot and plant out next spring the bloom are very beautiful

    Nicole, do you have to do anything to your banana trees in winter? I just purchased one a few weeks back. It is in a pot and I haven't decided a permanent spot for it. What do I do with it? I'm in Richlands, NC, believe I'm zone 8b.

    • @mycarolinagarden
      @mycarolinagarden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there. If it's the basjoo hardy banana, obviously it can easily tolerate NC weather, but I would either try to get it into the ground before frost, or read up on if it will be just fine in a pot outside. I don't have any potted bananas myself, so I'd just want to be sure a pot is plenty of protection for the roots if it stays outdoors. It probably is, I just don't have experience with it. I don't do a thing to my bananas in the ground for winter, besides cut them back and just leave the trunk. I know some people wrap theirs and leave leaves on, but I haven't done that myself. I have learned not to cut the trunks low to the ground. I leave them up a few feet so I have that immediate height when they begin to leaf out in spring.
