Your ambition is inspiring and passion contagious. Polyglots blow my mind considering how difficult it's been to learn Russian, so 6 languages would be astounding to say the least. The profession/skill of translation has greatly intrigued me as well! I've yet to read Proust but plan to dig deep into French literature in 2026. Maybe when I feel moderately fluent in Russian I'll consider learning French...

god, I l o v e soap&skin!! I heard one song of theirs when I was a child, in some play in a really small underground theatre in Moscow, where my mother and her girlfriends used to take me from time to time. that play was a religious story, and “spiracle” by soap&skin was the refrain song, that played between sequences of scenes. I was so touched by the character of the vocal, the emotional intensity of their music. I was too young to know what the song is about and could only understand very few words, but the whole thing made a strong impression on me. I discovered their other albums many years later and was so excited to know it’s the same artist who wrote that very song I heard in the theater.

As for Shakespeare, perhaps he as an older man wrote parts for younger people - often infusing them with wisdom beyond their years. For that reason a little seasoning in the reader is helpful when working through the entire canon. Even a relatively simple play like Julius Caesar flies over the heads of younger audiences - despite its popularity with students. Not only trying to grasp the motive forces of powerful leaders but also integrating into one's ken things we decline to admit exist in real life.

I suppose I was about your age when I resolved to read Proust in French but it took me about 40 years before actually doing it. He plays with memory in a unique way: Allowing the ways we shape reality also to shape recall of it, which makes reading difficult. Understanding his narrative requires reading between the lines and making inferences of what is understood but not spoken about openly, and I think that is not how we usually remember. I think when we remember we think (rightly or not) it's true and unedited. Proust's memories however typically seem consistent with the way sophisticated people censor or chill their own speech. I don't know, of course, but I don't think that I'd spend so much time with one work again.

and by starting organisational skills at a young age you are able to achieve these miracles. That is amazing. I was never able to do that sort of thing, therefore I am a writer not a student of writers. Haha, that last statement was just replicating a cliche intellectual writers style trope in my own way, really I did read quite a lot until youtube addiction and other long term addictions got me addicted to desiring to simp more eloquently than Keates would if he weren't published but just as talented. My pen name would have been miraculosophicles the way interesting things happened to me on acid for the few years I did psychedelics but then due to walking the neighborhood during working hours the police began a file as people in the neighborhood worried and a few years later the mental health system barged in punched me in the face ordered me to "get fat as we don't want your type walking the streets" with appetite stimulants in my medication and put "please eat" to be said and indicated to him pleading subliminals in my families internet government and traditional preferences and now I can't seek and find living wisdom with or without psychedelics as covid stopped my mother forcing me to walk and now I can hardly stand for long enough to have a shower. But I do write philosophically, although from a little too uneducated enough place for my education is status family and extended family, on facebook without pay. So, I love listening to your channel but have noticed that you do not give your opinion or commentary on the work (maybe to remain uncontroversial) but tend to talk about the attitude of treasured moment life discipline needed to live a life of magically mundane but fairytale and living but definitely not crass commercial beauty nonetheless of constant cream of the crop ideas study and travel and reading and study again. The chosen lifestyle of millions if we could do away with this human overpopulation and evil solutions to human overpopulations and the problem of providers and great providers too often not doing anywhere near Enough to minimize evil consequences to all beings when they do great projects involving bigger scales than family. Good luck with your great channel I already enjoy it and have subscribed.

Have you watched the movie The Phantom of the Paradise? It is a retelling of Faust as a musical, it was Brian de Palma's first studio production. Set primarily in the home/lair/music production studio of Swan (Mephistopheles), it is a mashup of Faust and Phantom of the Opera. I would like to tout Robert Egger's film The Northman too. Have you seen it? Phenomenal. Retelling of Hamlet, Norse myth, Hindu metaphysics, Buddhist enlightenment, the Passion, the Edda, what's not in it? Wagner! Braveheart. Is it a bit too much? you decide. Oh Icelandic Saga, Bjork plays a witch. Willem Defoe plays a shaman. Set in immemorial Denmark, it is a shamanic retelling of Hamlet; if one knew no other source but Hamlet I think one could claim this is the GREATEST performance of Hamlet ever undertaken.

Seeing you "making a living" through your love of literature makes perfect sense. It's not about the vulgar necessity of making money; that's just an unhappy fact that we all have to face. What it's really about is sustaining yourself by living your passion. What incredible good fortune that would be. Millions of people can only dream of doing that.

Helloooo regarding Shakespeare. I bought Royal Shakespeare Company editions of all of his plays. They are excellent in that there are really good notes, and information about past performances etc. And I paid peanuts for them secondhand on World of books or whatever. So I have a whole collection now for very little cash. Anthony and Cleopatra is my favourite 🤩

'North Stars' is my new way to describe my goals.....SMART goals never worked lol. I think people with goals as ambitions as ours cannot be time-bound. I have always refused to translate poetry from 'dead' authors. I don't mind translating anything else, though I have never translated works of fiction that possess too many phonetic devices. Nonetheless, I'm currently translating a poetry collection from Brazilian Portuguese to English and I had to consult the author multiple times -basically every other poem- to make sure I knew what he meant was correct. Are you recording the audiobook in English? Fantastic video as always xoxo

Bonjour Maria ~ thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas - Shakespeare says best how I feel: wonderful wonderful and most wonderful wonderful and yet again wonderful! re: 1st goal and how to express your feelings on Proust and Soap & Skin ~ what immediately came to my mind was Rilke (mitchell's translation) 1st stanza of 1st Elegy: Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels' hierarchies? and even if one of them pressed me suddenly against his heart: I would be consumed in that overwhelming existence. For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure. 40 years ago, my first day at university, browsing the shelves at the library, I randomly chose this book wondering who is this Rilke? What are the Duino Elegies? I read this 1st stanza and slowly sank to the floor, sobbing. I knew each word in the stanza, but had never seen them in that order. A great fear and sadness that if I read further, I'd never again be able to read it for the first time. And these were the surface feelings. I was overwhelmed and consumed by the beauty of his words. I know it sounds soooo dramatic, but it's the truth. About 10 years later I read the 2nd stanza of the 1st elegy, but have never read further. You've given me my first goal for 2025: read all of Rilke's Duino Elegies and The Sonnets to Orpheus. It's time. So thankful I found your channel in 2024. Thank you for your quietly strong and thoughtful voice! ✨💜🍀🙏🏼

Hi Maria, I would highly recommend you purchase the third series of the Arden Shakespeare editions of each play. They are quite affordable for what they offer, scholarly (long thematic introductions with discussions on themes, adaptations, history of the text, nuances to consider, and filmic and actorly details that you can refer back to once you have read each play), full of footnotes on each page for every challenging word/turn of phrase/reference that is used by Bill, and actually used quite often by actors and people involved in theatre. Some may say that these editions are too difficult, obscure, or overly detailed for the average reader, but you are not an average reader; I am sure that the Arden editions will be helpful to your journey of reading Shakespeare. If it means anything, I have used these editions for my own foray into Willy's work. Read the play, read the introductions (they are often over 100 pages long and explicate the ideas and themes of the play so well through wonderful commentaries), watch a couple of the adaptations, whether they are theatrical or on film, and then move on to the next! It is a very efficient process, and surprisingly not very time-consuming either.

Thanks for the recommendation 🙏🏻 I think they're still between 8 and 15€ per book if I'm seeing it right. Maybe I can find them secondhand somewhere because what is included sounds amazing. But the price is still quite high I find.

Improvisation is the hardest part of acting, had problems with it myself at the beginning. But its so essential to let go of your ego and live in the present, accepting and reacting to what happens around you, and relax not caring for the outcome and how foolish you may appear. Its hard to get totally out of the comfort zone like that, you should do it little by little with a group of people and a teacher you learn to trust and know. It took me two/three years in the acting academy to finally come to that place of freedom and it has served me in all areas of life. This is exactly why im hosting my own personal acting course for beginners: to help people get out of the comfort zone and find themselves in a safe space. You really come to know yourself deeply doing this kind of work with the body, emotions etc.

Finally I found a channel for my messy brain. I don't know English but I think I'm gonna be a great English poet in future. Love you lucidity
