I love the idea of a book club. Coming from America where any higher education is extremely expensive YT has been such a great resource for those wanting to self-learn and better themselves. Even some book clubs on patreon are great and very affordable, comparatively-speaking. I really respect your desire to want to keep such positive content available and affordable for as many as possible. It sounds like you are an intuitive person with good intentions, so you will know the right thing to do when the time comes! Channels with such positive energy are a blessing.
I started studying literature at the age of 12. I'm 28 now finishing my PhD in literature and about to start a wonderful teaching career at a great Uni. i'm so excited to share my knowledge with students. I never had a back up plan- but i knew i would do everything and anything possible to get here.
Thanks for answering the fun questions! The doggo is so lovely and the background is a nice shot as well! Quite aesthetic! Your videos have always stood out to me in terms of being very aesthetically pleasing, harmonic and interesting! Interesting that you mention that you find it your hobby! It comes through very well!
Thank you for shouting out my channel and for answering my question. Proust and yoga, Shakespeare and breathing exercises-I love the kaleidoscopic flow of your thinking! Huge congratulations on 10k. Fully deserved.
You've really become my favourite channel :) I always love your insights and you always manage to make me excited to read. Most of the time I immediately pick up one of my books after I have watched one of your videos. Your presence and way of talking is also so pleasant; it is calming and captivating. I really relate to not being someone who has always read a lot. Thank you for sharing that. I chose to do a literature related degree because English was my favourite subject (even though, as in your case, the classes in high school were uninspired and of very low quality in terms of what we managed to discuss) and I felt drawn to books even though I did not have a lot of experience with reading or knowledge of relevant works. I remember being at an introductory day of one of the degree programs I was doubting between: I was sitting at a table where people were discussing books and I felt so ashamed and incompetent because I did not know any of the works they were talking about. In my case it was partly a matter of coming from a family where people did not read and where we did not have a bookshelf. In the meantime I have collected a lot of books ;) I think your videos are very valuable because it can help people like us to have access to material where literature is discussed; it can help people discover their passion for literature or develop it. It is so helpful to have a guide, and you are one. Thanks again, Maria ❤❤❤
I had no idea about your prior TH-cam attempts. Thanks so much for sharing! It's nice to hear the various unanticipated elements of this strange BookTube marathon we're on. I hope all continues to be well with you, and thank you for answering our questions!
The usual riveting trip through your deep thinking existence. With all your videos I’ve been intrigued by how you read, what you read, the subjects your studying, the notes you’re taking away from the books, the classes you will take next semeste - in essence your intellectual life. And it’s been a delight and illuminating and inspiring to observe and listen to all you’ve captured in your short films. Today, your answers (some of them) take us out of the books and into your life and you somehow got even cooler imo. Your attitude toward study, toward university, toward career…every week I watch and I finish and I say, I want to be more like her. Thank you so much for sharing the wonderful outside (glorious Vienna usually, today lovely. Orway) and what goes on between your ears and in a way your heart. It connects with me and lifts my spirit and makes me want to read better and live better. That sounds like hyperbole even as I write it but it’s true. When you connect with what a person is putting out there it can really be game changing. Congratulations on exams and subscribers and Paris and having the courage to go back to uni and share the experience. It’s all so grand.
Nice video, thank you. You're credibility and integrity comes shining through. Thank you for your time and work, it's appreciated. Sorry I missed it live.
This video is keeping me great company today, your voice is amazing and you have a very beautiful outlook on life, which I deeply appreciate. Also, as a native Portuguese speaker, I think you would be more than able to learn the language, especially seing as you already speak other languages. I would like to learn German but feel the same way about learning it as you do with Portuguese 😅 maybe it's time for us to commit to it! I am also studying Comparative Literature, so maybe in the future we could practice while talking about it? 🌟 I am learning Russian at the moment and it is not easy, but it's a lot of fun! Anyways, congratulations on 10k subscribers, you deserve each one of them!
Thank you for this video! I remember stumbling on a book called "Immediacy, or The Style of Too Late Capitalism," which is a work of literary criticism on the conditions and frameworks modern societies provide when we consume art. It seems to echo your thoughts on the challenges of studying literature. I haven't read it yet, but I thought you might like to give it a go. ^^
I cannot thank you enough for your thoughts on the book club. I could not agree with you more. Speaking for myself, I enjoy your content to the max, but if it is going to be behind a paywall, as you mentioned and I loved, I am pretty sure I will not be able to afford it, as I will have to pay in dollars, which requires a deep pocket, and I am not at all. Anyway, if you ever change your mind, I will defenitly welcome it because I always hope the best for you as you deserve it and more. Thanks and congratulations.
Pure pleasure getting to know you a bit through this video. I was surprised by your revelation that you've only recently become a serious reader. You hold forth like someone who emerged from the womb with a book in her hand. Your insights are interesting and often thought provoking, even for an inveterate reader like myself.
I came here from your video on what you learned in your first year of literary studies. My mind feels so nourished taking in so many new ideas and concepts. I always wanted to study literature at school! While that isn't possible anymore, could you share some ways to dive into literary studies for those of us well beyond school? As you suggested, I am already subscribed to Benjamin hehe! I'm so curious about the social history, theories, analysis and criticism, movements, etc of literature.
Made it to the end - inner circle :) Great video and congrats on all the subscribers! As for book club - the mom in me is telling you to wait on that - you'll be moving to Paris and will have your hands full with that. I would recommend waiting until you are through with your Paris experience to really immerse yourself there. I'm sure we'd all be quite content with reading related Paris vlogs . Having said all that, you do whatever makes your heart sing.
Haha this made me smile! I recognise your face from comments on other videos and the "mom" thought was just fitting :D I really appreciate your thoughts and I think you're right. If I do a book club, I'll leave it here on youtube. There's already so much going on in my life. No need to start more projects that just make things complicated and overwhelming. Thanks for the support, I really appreciate you 🙏🏻 All the best to you!
This is my second time seeing you and I liked your way of speaking and calmness. Thank GOD you decided to make a TH-cam channel on studying literature because I am about to take my masters in English literature and I am not a native speaker of English. I’m in fact saudi 😅 I have a request and I hope you take it into consideration. Could you please make a TH-cam video where you explain the literary theories of English literature in a simple way using a simple language? I would also LOVE a video about how to make a literary research because whenever I want to learn how to do it all I see on TH-cam or websites is how to do scientific ones! And I know both types of researches follow the same steps and strategies, but still 😩 So I am begging you with all of my heart to do a video where you do a detailed explanation of doing a literary research.. Loads of love, II know my comment was long sorry for that. 🫣🤭
After studying and completing three degrees in literature, I found your vlog was so refreshing. It was as the Danes might say so hygge, and at the same time so insightful. As to Emerson a big yes. Thoreau too. I know that the former editor for Amazon books James Marcus has completed a book on Emerson. Thank you for a wonderful vlog - hope the numbers climb with the caveat the content remains the same in style and presentation :-) . A writer I would recommend (if you have the time) Lin Yutang and his "Importance of Living" (1937).
My first serious reread at about 11yrs of age was Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, my imagination was just on fire recalling all my earlier experience of the colours and inventions that were Mr Wonka's permanent journey in retaining childhood and the magic of youthfulness and having all of one's opportunity ahead of oneself, oh and, of course, the taste of chocolates: a life love of mine!
Lovely video! 😊 Re: Jobs with a literature degree - I have studied literature & linguistics to a Masters degree and loved it so much. Then I worked in marketing for 4 years and now I'm going back to uni for a tech degree. I figured that I love language as a subject at uni but not so much working with it. Mainly because the job market for the more interesting Jobs (like publishing or academia) is quite competitive and this is not for me. There are plenty of jobs in marketing but I actually hate selling stuff to people 😅. So I decided I want to earn my money doing something else. But I do not regret studying language - it gave me so much joy and I felt like I HAD to do it. 😊
Beautiful background. Look forward to hearing your opinion on contemporary Norwegian literature. RE: biggest challenge of learning lit - Inspiring words - making the most out of what's in front of you. I wish we didn't have to remind ourselves of that all the time. RE: How taste in books evolved - completely agree. I didn't start reading until I was perhaps 27? Before then when I would read it was just in this naive sort of scope where I'd look for answers to specific questions and dart back and forth with no real glue holding anything together. RE: Career when studying lit + future Plans: Agreed. And again purposeful/inspiring. We need to allow ourselves the chance to be happy when it comes to our future plans. Maybe it wont' be a sure thing but if we don't put all of ourselves in what we want to do, how can we expect to be happy? RE: Other Music - Wish you had a list somewhere for some of these artists to check out! If you're into Lana Del Rey, you should check out a film called Paris, Texas. It's fantastic and I imagine it inspired her song. RE: 10 Books: Great picks, especially #1. Emerson is underrated. Congratulations on your success. Happy your hard work and stick-to-it-ness has paid off. Maintaining this channel AND studying simultaneously must be incredibly demanding. Be careful you don't burn the candles at both ends by adding the book club. Appreciate your videos
Very interesting video, lots of food for thought. Thank you so much for sharing. After going through the questions submitted in your community post, I decided not to ask any because mine were either already there, or too specific; I thought they would not be of general interest. Also, I knew the answer to many of them from many of your previous videos. When I find a channel like yours (I have found a handful) I make an effort to watch all the videos in order to really grasp what's going on, what kind of life-course is being shared (so far I've watched about 50-60%). Another very important feature of those channels (including yours) is the comments section; I come for those as much as the video itself. This is a very good indication of the quality of the content: the quality of the comments. Which kind of brings me to a question that just popped in my head: do you ever get bad or abusive comments? How do you handle that situation? You don't have to answer that, of course. As a former student of literature (BA in English language & lit., unfinished/dropout from a Masters in Comparative Lit., and former university teacher in those fields [!]), I would say this: the practical usefulness of literary studies is very very limited, but it will make the student very good at performing many other things. What are those things? Well it's up to the student herself. In other words, we are talking about a very specific, particular skill. It doesn't matter whether you stay in academia, become a teacher, translator, publisher, even a writer, or just for self-discovery. I used to tell my students that a literature student is a professional reader; her job is to read, and, most importantly, give some account of that reading. It is this account that matters, in my opinion. To give an account of something is to tell a story (dar cuenta de algo es contar una historia, in my native Spanish). Not necessarily in words, mind you; a particular, specific behavior would be the bare, but ESSSENTIAL, minimum. It's fair to say that I wouldn't be writing this or about this if it weren't for you. It's not your fault, it is not your responsibility, but you are certainly the cause. Books work in mysterious ways... "Sei ein Mann und folge mir nicht nach."
I loved the idea of a book club, especially here on TH-cam where you can reach a broader audience. Also, really interesting q&a. Looking forward for more content and news about the book club. Tschüss :)
I am really glad you mentioned Dürrenmatt. "Die Physiker" is one of my favourite works; it's probably the one I quoted the most in Ethics and German classes, whenever I worked on essays/exams/presentations. Also, as in your case, being exposed to authors-like ETA Hoffmann and Stefan Zweig-was definitely an upside.
Lovely video! I most enjoyed 41:16 -- never would have guessed you were into extreme metal! How interesting. I'm not sure how to spell all the bands you mentioned, could you write out the list you mentioned?
Lovely channel ❤ It's so nice to find people who adore words and literature. Thann you for such nice content. One technical question: I also have blue yeti moc and I plug it in laptop, so where do you plig it, also lap top or camera? Thank you
@Strange Lucidity I also used to mostly listen to Metal music when I was in High school. Now I’m going to start a Creative Writing program online soon. I’m thirty seven years old, and I love Lana Del Rey. We have some things in common, lol.
Hello @Strange Lucidity, what equipment do you use to record yourself. Example camera, microphone etc…… I would greatly appreciate as I am currently attempting to start a book reading channel. Thank you Gabriel V.
Thanks for this video! Relatively If you are interested in languages (you also mentioned Russian), I advise you to study the Ukrainian language. The Ukrainian language is very pleasant, melodious, lyrical, even beautiful, it has a large number of words and synonyms. By the way, the band DakhaBrakha is a Ukrainian band. I myself understand, read, write and can speak Russian, Ukrainian, English. Tried to learn German. But Ukrainian is the best!
There’s a 1983 British movie called Educating Rita. It was nominated for three academy awards. It is about Rita, a hairdresser and who wants something more in her life (not just marriage, babies and going to the pub on the weekend with her husband), so chooses to go to university to study literature. It changed her and (I think) for the best (she became more cultured and thrived as a person). I recommend this movie. Thank you for this Q & A. It’s wonderful to see your TH-cam channel growing (it’s the fastest growing channel that I’m subscribed to). A thumbs up 👍
@@v0tb I feel sure Maria is happy to be helping you learn a language, I'm betting she will use her qualifications that she's currently working towards to be an educator, maybe for people with learning difficulties even. Take care and good luck with your learning
@Vyborne I guess she had tough choices between questions and, probably, many people didn't get an answer my friend, don't take it personally, her video was already nearly an hour, twice the length of her typical uploads
@@ScottChamberlain-j9m Well, I would like to donate to her channel but she never answers my questions so I don't think she's so serious about people donating.
@@strange.lucidity hello Maria . Sorry for the delay. I was trying to recall my questions, and then went on vacation. I recall that one of my questions is about the Robert Musil books: “ The Man without Qualities.” A friend gifted me that book when I was just starting university but it just sat on the shelf. The woman who gifted me the book was my best friend. I don’t think you’ve read it but what are your impressions of it as an Austrian literature student (as the author was Austrian). Originally I thought the Musil work is too large of an undertaking so I am curious to hear from someone who has , at least, heard of people who have read this. I’m getting more acclimated to the idea of long works as I have the first book from Proust which you love but also I picked up Knausgard as well; though admittedly, I haven’t read either yet. You were kind enough to send me the link to the French narration of Proust in a comment off one of your videos ( if I can find it again). By the way, I have a certificate from the university in Paris ( amongst others) you are attending in the fall; looking forward to hearing about it in English or français. Danke. Tchus!
I would say it would be fine for you to post book club videos behind a paywall temporarily and then make them publicly available after a period of time. It's commonly done with movies, some of which go to theaters first, then come out in DVD format later. Books coming out in hardback first for a period of time, and only later in paperback, is another analogue. That way your patrons would feel special for having private access to your work first, after reading with you, and your work would also be widely published for the non-paying public.
@@timelston4260 I said earlier I could not afford to subscribe, but that doesn't mean I'm against Maria optimising her income, so this is a fabulous suggestion, thank you, cos I didn't know it could be done the way you describe
Wow, Dead Can Dance is one of my favourite bands of all time 🤍 PS: I highly recommend Fernando Pessoa, in case you haven’t read his work? (as you’ve mentioned an interest in the Portuguese language) 😊
There are more and more very bright young English people choosing not to go to University due to the Tuition fees here, which is just so so sad. They don't want to start out in life and work saddled with £30,000 and more of debt.

Tschüss :)
Maria's Blueberry Muffins are a whole vibe!!! Check out that video...
Truly, I think from now on there should be a blueberry recipe in all my videos!
Thank you for such an interesting video 😊
I am really glad you mentioned Dürrenmatt. "Die Physiker" is one of my favourite works; it's probably the one I quoted the most in Ethics and German classes, whenever I worked on essays/exams/presentations.
Also, as in your case, being exposed to authors-like ETA Hoffmann and Stefan Zweig-was definitely an upside.
I absolutely love Dürrenmatt, he's such a genius! Thanks for sharing! ✨
Bathory, Ulver, Burzum, and Bohren. You have great taste. Will check out Soap&Skin. I recommend Tangerine Dream - Rubycon and Phaedra albums.
So it seems I am considered inner circle :)
Thank you
Viva la literatura Hispanoamericana: Ecuador, Perú , Colombia, México, Brazil, Argentina....
I love Bohren!
great video - what music do you play on the piano and/or sing?
I loved it when you mentioned Portuguese. Are you more interested in (or curious about) Portuguese or Brazilian literature?
@Strange Lucidity I also used to mostly listen to Metal music when I was in High school. Now I’m going to start a Creative Writing program online soon. I’m thirty seven years old, and I love Lana Del Rey. We have some things in common, lol.
Make a speaking-only-german video
Maybe you could use the TH-cam membership and then realease the bookclub video 1 or 2 days earlier for members.
I'll give it a thought!
Hello @Strange Lucidity, what equipment do you use to record yourself. Example camera, microphone etc……
I would greatly appreciate as I am currently attempting to start a book reading channel. Thank you Gabriel V.
Thanks for this video!

If you are interested in languages (you also mentioned Russian), I advise you to study the Ukrainian language.
❤
And how far along in Proust are you now? I remember finding your channel way back from the first Proust video you made
also - i am about 3000 plus pages into in search of lost time. have you done any videos on this work?
if you want to try essays try: take a look at Michel de Montaigne and Francis Bacons collection of essays.
A thumbs up 👍
Thank you for the recommendation of this movie. I looked it up and watched. Loved it❤❤❤
I like your cover photo.
Paywall the discussion and social aspect of the club, publish the high effort vids.
Hi
I use your video to learn English because you’re so quiet ❤
@@v0tb I feel sure Maria is happy to be helping you learn a language, I'm betting she will use her qualifications that she's currently working towards to be an educator, maybe for people with learning difficulties even. Take care and good luck with your learning
@@ScottChamberlain-j9m Thx bro
My questions never get answered...well, one question got answered at the beginning but not anymore. How were the questions submitted for this q&a?
@Vyborne I guess she had tough choices between questions and, probably, many people didn't get an answer my friend, don't take it personally, her video was already nearly an hour, twice the length of her typical uploads
@@ScottChamberlain-j9m Well, I would like to donate to her channel but she never answers my questions so I don't think she's so serious about people donating.
What was your question? Maybe I can answer it here? :-)
Hi.!.. may i ask what level you're in now, degree? 😊
How old are you?
Wow, Dead Can Dance is one of my favourite bands of all time 🤍 PS: I highly recommend Fernando Pessoa, in case you haven’t read his work? (as you’ve mentioned an interest in the Portuguese language) 😊

You can learn and speak English language if you watch everyday as this tipe videos.

Hej har du godt
There are more and more very bright young English people choosing not to go to University due to the Tuition fees here, which is just so so sad. They don't want to start out in life and work saddled with £30,000 and more of debt.
I was astonished to learn that University is free in Austria. It shows how different the world is outside the UK.
@@peterbenson123 Margaret Thatcher and Reaganomics... such an infuriating and sad story. Turning high education into a commodity was and is an ongoing tragedy.
Please, read brazilian and latin american literature: Machado de Assis, Roberto Bolaño, Júlio Cortázar, disseminate our literature in your country
Adalbert Stifter? Avoid that one. Not worth the time. I can sample an author and determine if they were a prophet or not.
