I enjoyed your summary of your reading. I read many of the same texts at UEA. I recollect in the first degree we had compendiums for each course. We had to study Anglo-Saxon literature, and Middle English. Then Chaucer. In the late 1970's to early 1980"s there was an emphasis on the primary texts - but there was a paradigmatic shift toward theory and cultural studies which moved then to identify politics. I think it is important to negotiate theory and maintain your love of literature. Read also without borders. Read against your prejudices and experiment. Love your vlogs. Look forward to your Sorbonne adventures :-)

Cool source summary! I like how you include quotes. Interesting to see differences from my (comparatively limited) education in the US. Out of curiosity I tried to keep count of how many of these novels/plays sources I’ve read (in full) on my own, and came up with about 19, which is not bad. I’m always recommending people to read the full ‘Don Quixote’ - it’s fun and easy and unexpectedly modern. Added ‘Address Unknown’ to my TBR, and you inspired me to finally tackle ‘Magic Mountain’ if I can find my copy.

I have to say that I really envy you (in a cool way). I'm a double degree student in the University of Málaga (Spain) and one of my degrees is English. Here, students aren't allow to chose their courses because of a strict syllabus and short time ago, the organization decided to remove most of filology estudies in English degree; which I personally find a pity. At this moment, I'm on my third year out of five and I feel like I'm not learning enough... I whish I could have an enriching academic experience as yours. So enjoy and feel fortunate!
Speaking of Dickinson and the sociology of literature, I just read a book called “White Heat” about her friendship with Thomas Wentworth Higginson, an abolitionist, proto-feminist, freethinker, and minor literary figure but, perhaps more importantly, public intellectual of the time. Theirs was mostly an epistolary friendship - they only saw each other a couple of times - but she trusted his judgment and permitted him to publish a few of her poems while she was alive. To his credit, he recognized her genius and took part in the publication of the trove of poems found after she died. It’s by an historian named Barbara Wineapple, beautifully written and quite moving for a work of history! You might enjoy it. I have been enjoying your journey a great deal. Hey! I know this video is some weeks old, but I would like to note that you’re using your mic the wrong way. It’s not made to be talked into the top; instead, you should angle the side on which the Blue logo and the knob are towards your face. For content like this, the cardioid setting on your mic is best. It’ll mostly pick up noises in front of it (i.e. where your face is if you oriented it well) and it’ll cut out noises coming from other sides (i.e. background noises).
I thought it odd that the Hardcore Literature guy that you follow kind of complained about how many books he had to read for his Oxford degree. I would have thought that if you were going to study literature at Oxford that you probably would have already read many of the major books eg Shaekspeare already, and that he could focus on the secondary literature.
You very much overestimate the calibre of student who goes to Oxford. They're still kids who have just finished their A-levels (or equivalent) ... not genuine specialists.

The majority of writers / readers on BookTube and Twitter are at the Master's or PhD level; professional book reviewers with contacts in publishing industry. Some adopt the persona of book nerds, regular book lovers you see in the local second-hand bookstore. Don't let the appearances deceive you. Something I have picked up on over the years. While I appreciate your input, in the grand scheme, what you're doing is the basics. Very few actually talk about what course material, assigned readings they engage with for their degree at the postgrad level. Quite telling.The publishing world, despite what gets portrayed in the public is heavily tilted toward academia. Writers are belatedly starting to get the respect they deserve to the point that even Pope Francis thinks fiction and poetry are important and shouldn't be marginalized as a so-called 'minor art.'

In English, in the arts and humanities, you should probably use 'academic' and not 'scientific' for papers and study. "Scientific" is more for the "real" sciences. Also may pay to learn how to say Edward Said's name properly. "Said" is not an English name, he is Palestinian. I pronounced like you did until I heard it said properly.
I respectfully disagree. Academic papers is synonymous with scientific papers. The distinction dates back from when "hard sciences" couldn't bear to be put on the same level as Humanities. And to be fair, there was a time when the Liberal Arts were acting like AO about them being superior to "hard sciences". Anyway, scientific and academic are both valid when dealing with research papers/studies etc. Some institutions are making the distinction, others don't. I don't for an published paper on media analysis is no less scientific than one on new lead shields in experimental physics.

While there are methodologies used in the humanities, what is used often over time can change as they learn better approaches to things. Often they don't deal with "hard facts". Also, I noted within humanities because there isn't really a series of facts that you're either right or wrong on, that the grades you get for essays etc varied from department. Classics and Theology were generous in their grading (easy to get an A) whereas in Religious Studies they were more picky. In Maths you could get 100% just by answering all the questions correctly. I don't see much science in Art History... The arts were around before science and science came from natural philosophy which was one of the arts. I've never come across someone calling their arts stuff a science. TH-cam academics I follow don't use the term scientific for their work.
