I'm here to share my love and enthusiasm for motorcycling, and to inspire folks to ride. I put a particular emphasis on the older rider, since I think we're underrepresented on TH-cam, but BugMoto is for everyone who enjoys calm, non-revenue-driven, inspiring and introspective motorcycle content. I'm not here to sell you anything except the pure joy of riding a motorcycle.
I ride a 2024 Triumph Scrambler 900 and a 2024 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro.
Previously I've owned a 2017 Triumph T120 Black, a Suzuki GS500e, and a Honda CX500. I have also owned a a 2023 Vespa GTS, a Piaggio Liberty 150, and a couple of mopeds.
My name is Dan but I go by Bug. I live in Portland, OR. I'm an expert in only one thing: my own happiness.
For more info, or just to say hi, email: bug@bugmo.to
Note to potential sponsors/partners: I DON'T DO dedicated product reviews but I'm happy to talk about and feature products that I truly believe in as part of my videos. Email me and let's talk.

Coming Back to Motorcycling After a Long Break
If you're an older rider just getting back into motorcycling after some time off, some things may have changed since you last rode, but a lot has stayed the same - it's still one of the most therapeutic things you can do for yourself.
Once you twist the throttle and feel the wind in your face, you'll be hooked all over again.
Here are some tips and thoughts for folks returning to motorcycle riding after taking time off the saddle.

❤
I started riding at 15, now I’m 71, I’ll quit riding when I’m dead, not a minute sooner.
The last time I got back into riding I spent a summer going to every Demo Ride event from every dealer in my area. I remember Harley had two that year and I literally tried every bike they made. I tried everything under the sun from Victory, BMW, Triumph and even Ducati which I would never buy. Everything except sport bikes which don't interest me. It really showed me what I did and did not like and cost nothing except my time. I ended up with a 1800 VTX. Planning on doing the same this summer and buying in the following spring.
North Idaho is a great place to cruise. I'm 66 ride 2001 Honda VFR. With Givi windshield xtra on top provides excellent wind protection. I ride by myself don't have any riding friends. I now have 74,000 on. Riding clears my mind refresh my soul, feel alive and life is better after every ride.
Thanks! that was a fun reflection on riding as we age and why we still do. I look forward to your next video and commentary.
Enjoy my friend !🏍️
Amen. Returned a couple years ago. I'm 70. Started with a 350, now riding my favorite from years ago. A 2023 Bonneville T120. Great fun riding and maintaining the bikes. A lot better than the recliner and tv!
I ride alone,enough said.
What aftermarket mirrors do you have on there? They look pretty sweet.
Your voice is calming, intriguing, easy to listen to, and your content always hits the spot. Thank you.
Jerry's "Ride like a Pro" courses are worth their weight in gold. Even after 45 years of riding i still use the parking lot exercises after a week or two off the bike. He's an ex motorcycle cop who has been doing motorcycle training courses for many years. I think it was 15 years ago I found him. Your Triumph looks great! I fell in love with the Bonneville line 2 months ago at a rally and demo rides. My knees barked badly with the mid controls... but I found the Speedmaster had forward controls for comfort and all day riding like i enjoy. One future day, I may own one for my next bike. Enjoy the miles - we are Blessed to get to ride!!!
Thanks for the video and the perspective on this bike. I also have wanted a motorcycle since I was a kid but it either never worked out or I had to many life demands to pay for one. Now at age 52 I cannot stop thinking about motorcycles. I have ridden bicycles my whole life but now that bicycles cost as much as motorcycles I am looking for a safety class to get my endorsement. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Four wheels move the body, two wheels the soul. What ever makes you Happy-End.
Great video! …. 70 and still enjoying the road!
I got back into riding a few years ago after a 25-year hiatus. I now ride most days, even in the winter of the pavement is dry. I enjoy longer day and weekend trips, but even a 60 minute ride at the end of a stressful day puts me in a great mood. I am grateful to have re-discovered the joys of riding!
I have been back on my bike after a 14yr break, due to family commitments and so on, I am 59yrs old I am enjoying my bike riding more than ever, I did watch some videos on you tube but at the end of the day I am riding my way and not pushing myself, great channel you have its a credit to you 😅🇦🇺
Yt videos : Reg Local(uk expolice instructor. His How to pass an advanced motorcycle test playlist is superb) Moto Jitsu out of San Diego also excellent
I took a 2.5 decade break myself to be a * responsible adult* I went back to riding 5 years ago after scoring an early retirement deal. I caught the adv bug and bought a KlR 650. Found out after a few months this that I had to ride 200 miles of asphalt to find 29 miles of dirt. I traded off the KLR for a Honda NC750DCT. A joy to ride on the roads with enough off-road ability to tackle the dirt roads and forest trails I encounter. At 67, I ride with a healthy amount of caution. I typically ride the speed limit or less when I can . I avoid rush hours and night riding. I’m extra cautious right now because of the deer activity. I like to say that I’m not old cautious because I’m old, I’m old because I’m cautious
Absolutely loving my Royal Enfield Classic 350 after a 35+ year gap from my last bike (59 yo). Hope my late-mid-life crisis lasts! I thoroughly recommend it.
Saved. Your philosophy on life and riding is yessssss. Thank you!
Nice video. I gave up riding in the 80's. Could only afford 1 vehicle and got tired of riding through the winter, so I traded my harley for a car. Got back into it 5 years ago with a Yamaha 650. Then moved up to a Deuce. It's my main way of staying sane.
Well I did about everything wrong. After riding from age 12 to 33 I hung it up for 29 years. At first because I was too busy. Then I'd start thinking about getting a bike and hit a deer. 3 times. At age 62 decided I was feeling half dead anyway without a bike. Purchased my new Moto Guzzi V7 Special and rode it off the dealers lot into traffic. First ride in 29 years and I must say it wasn't very relaxing. Now after 1100 miles I have my riding legs back. I try to ride every day. I don't ride around dusk in deer season. And always anticipate that that car is going to pull out in front of me or cut me off. Be able to stop or avoid it. That has saved me 3 times already.
Deer are a big problem in my area. They're worse than drivers because they're completely unpredictable and usually only seen after it's too late...
@@BugMotoChannel I never got my foot to the brake petal with the 3 I hit. They just magically appeared out of nowhere in front of the car. But one guy I know saw a deer standing in the bushes on the opposite side of the road. It ran out across the road and jumped into the wind shield of his GoldWing. They tend to be most active in the late afternoon during the fall season here in New England.
Great video mate, coming back to two wheels from my quarter of a century hiatus was as scary as hell at first, but at 59 i am now riding a 1600 cc, 800 lb cruiser and loving every minute of it. Keep up the terrific content👍👍
Blind spot mirrors are a very good, and cheap, idea. You can usually buy a set for under $10. I've always had them on any vehicle, from trucks to motorcycles, I've owned and it's amazing how much extra you can see with them.
I gotta try that. I have them on my truck and they are indeed useful.
I’m 63, started riding at 9, motocrossed in the 70s, in college in the early 80s all I had was a 750 Suzuki. Quit completely in ‘92 to raise kids, but always kept my endorsement. Saw an ad for the modern Bonnevilles in 2012. Bought a T100 a month later. Three major changes in those 30 years: The dramatic increase in the deer population (clipped one so far, many near hits), the rise in distracted drivers due to cell phones (a daily death cheat) and the even more incredible rise in the wafts of dope smoke streaming out of cars on the road (rare is a ride without being in someone’s pot plume). Love your vids!
I hit 3 deer in cars and that's one of the things that prevented me from riding for 29 years. I won't ride at dusk in the fall and even avoid driving then.
Thank you. Yes, I live in Portland, OR. I can't go three blocks without smelling it coming from someone's car.
Some of the best motorcycling content on TH-cam. Your writing background comes through in every video. Keep up the good work friend. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much!
Thanks Bug, every time I see you riding that Srambler I end up on the Triumph website. Motojitsu seems to have good riding advice for people looking.
I turned 62 last month, I haven't ridden my dirtbike for quite a while now and was feeling a bit bummed out about it. My knees just can't do it anymore. I started talking to a guy at the gas station who was riding an older Honda and he told me about some of the rides him and a few others have been doing. One of the group had a fjr1300 he wasn't riding any more so I bought it for next to nothing. My last road bike was a ZZR1200 so riding this new bike is very similar. I've never really gone on an extended road trip on a bike before but I'm planning out my first one now. Winter is right around the corner here in Utah so I have time to get the bike setup the way i want. I've never been to Mt Rushmore so that's going to be my first trip next summer.
Thanks bug!
So do it and put this planning thing aside . This is just an excuse to delay forever. The only things you need are: 1- a credit card 2- a motorcycle, whatever it may be, and 3- lots of willingness. These were the only things I needed when I made my trip from northeastern Brazil to the USA in 2017 in a Honda CB 500x. 20k miles, 88 days and 13 countries. Now, make that desire a reality, because if not, it will be nothing more than a dream. Here's a tip.
I stopped at 42 and got back on at 60 love it , for the last 4 year its been a blast, bike is in Hibernation not winter riding her to cold and snow and we cannot ride after dec 01 due to snow tire law, but cant wait for spring and getting my ride back out. Yep I live in the city and driving safe is something that I have learn to do again ... but that does not stop me from having adventures.
A little background. I’m 70 and the 1970s were my biking years. Moved to a ski town in 1980 and it was all about mountain biking and skiing. 40 some odd years later the work hard/play hard lifestyle caught up. Left knee replacement, right ankle replacement put a curb on my antics. Picked up a Tiger 900 and tiptoed back in. Here in Idaho there’s far more dirt than pavement so fitted some knobblies and have been scooting around since 22. My insanity from riding in my 20s has been completely tempered and my head swivels always. But you’re absolutely correct. What great therapy!
Loved this one, Bug. Thank you. You nailed it.
Mr Bug, Rode a CB350 while in high school (class of '74!) and sold it for a car to go to college. Not much riding after that bit of time. Then in 2004, after my second divorce, it came down to buying a really nice mower for my 4+ acres back in Michigan, or answer the call of the road. Been a consistent rider for 20 years and four motorcycles. The right decision. Ned in SC
I wholeheartedly endorse this decision!
MCrider - Motorcycle Training is a great resource on YT for learning how to ride, and/or refreshing the basics. I'm one of the content contributors and coaches over there as well. I really love your inspiring content. My wife and I sit down and listen to them on our living room TV. Keep it up!
Aw thanks! Yeah I really like MCrider. Speaks my language.
First, love your stuff. It calms my world. Now, around luggage, I have the 1200 Scrambler - in chrome, the best - and I put an extended luggage rack on the back and strap down Giant Loop luggage. Works great!
I am not much older (now 35 years old) since I sold my last 800cc motorcycle, in 2017. Last August I bought a 125cc Cub and I enjoy it so much. I feel I ride a motorcycle and not a small one. I ride it. I feel it. Much more than the 800cc Tiger I used to ride.
Took my class at 46 my military retirement present to myself. I started with a Sportster, a Softail, and now nine years later a Harley touring bike.
It is far better to regret doing something than regret NOT doing it. Pick up a calendar and put a red circle round a departure day, then depart. Personally, I wouldn`t announce my plan, just give one`s partner plenty of notice of the red circle, and how many weeks you will be gone. (I gave my wife 2 years notice of my 5 week trek in Mongolia)
MC rider comes to mind. Great advice BTW!
Spot on! I am definitely an older rider, but am very glad I also always loved a decently long walk on a regular basis. It really is vital to get plenty of exercise to keep strong in later years.
I started riding when I was 20 y.o., and rode for about 8 years before giving it up. Riding in SoCal was no fun anymore. Too much traffic everywhere. Started riding again 18 years ago after escaping to more rural locations. I’m so glad I came back to riding. Great therapy! Will likely be out riding to celebrate my 74th birthday this week.
Mcrider and Canyon Chasers are excellent
I had a 40 year gap since teens when I had a small bike and bought the big yellow bike you have but I don’t consider I’m ’later in life’ - it’s a mid-life de-crisis
You said motorcycling is more expensive? How? 120 mpg is a lot cheaper than 60mpg.
I think I meant to say motorcycling is still an expensive hobby, not that it's more expensive than it used to be...
Fuel economy is the only saving over a car. Insurance, more maintenance, helmet, gloves, jacket, pants, boots, wet weather gear, security (locks, chains etc), panniers/top box to store all of this... Just as well it's all worth it for the joy of being able ride! Ride safe👍
I'm not older, and I've only not rode for 4ish years. Even when I did, I had only rode for a few years. But one day recently I was sitting out on the deck with my wife and thinking about what would help me be less stressed with daily life. Ive got a lot of hobbies, but none of them are really stress relivers. Then for whatever reason I imagined my old motorcycle sitting on the deck about 10ft away and felt a little rush of excitement and a little relief, as if I was about to hop on and go for a ride. I realized how impactful riding a motorcycle was on me, how alleviating and like meditation makes you forget about everything else and just be in the moment, taking in the view and exploring new places. It's interesting to me because I have a lot of hobbies, but none have the same impact. That being said, I still don't have a bike, but my next will be a 2025 CF Moto 450 Ibex, something cheap, lightweight that I won't be worried about and can take just about anywhere within reason.
What's the ole saying, "You never see a motorcycle parked in front of a psychiatrist's office?" 🙂
Cars are parked.....motorcycles are waiting....
64 year old here started at age 8..Raced amateur MX at 15 Rm 250...Raced superbikes at 18..my advise to young riders is know your bike...dont exceed your rider abilities while enjoying its power and speed (easier said than done) Ive had plenty of broken bones and stitches...but always dress for the slide...not the ride.
Great to get a look at the man behind the very nice voice. I'm not a back to riding person, having consistently ridden over most of the last 30 years, but a whole lot of my experience has been similar to yours. I'm even also a software developer. Keep up the great work. I really like your format.
Thank you!
Love the story. It’s fact filled. Agree. I also agree we can help mitigate some dangers with an LED Brake Free on the back of your helmet. Check them out. All the gear all the time too. You’ll be glad you did. Safe miles of smiles.
I have a note into them to see if they'll let me borrow one for a video I'm doing about safety tips.
@@BugMotoChannel You will love it.
