Cato Street 1820 | David Benson

A performance of Cato Street 1820 from the original Edinburgh Fringe production of August 2019. Written, researched and performed by David Benson Unfortunately there were technical problems during the performance (as so often is the case when video'ing) so please excuse the disruption to the usual flow of the narrative. Music: Whilst Happy In My Native Land (Oh Give Me Death or Liberty) by Fran...
When Kenny (Everett) Met Frankie (Howerd) Good Afternoon 1980
มุมมอง 196Kปีที่แล้ว
Good Afternoon Plus - Thames TV 28th March 1980 Hosts: Mavis Nicholson and Simon Reed This will make painful viewing for those who, like me, love Frankie Howerd. Though it is not his finest hour, it shows another side of the great comedian, when confronted with his nemesis, a new, young and highly successful comedian. We also see Howerd dealing uncomfortably with retorts from a fellow performer...

Apologies for the poor quality of this transfer. It comes from a VHS recording made from television, sometime in August 1992, is the best and only available version of this broadcast. Directed by Jeremy Weller, the play...

Barry Cryer and David Benson discuss Kenneth Williams on 'Richard & Judy' 13th March 2006
มุมมอง 25K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The first time I met Barry Cryer was on this broadcast. He thereafter became a dear friend. I feel deeply honoured to have known him. We were introduced shortly before we went on air and despite my awe, he immediately disarmed me with his warmth, kindness and of course, ready wit. We were invited on to discuss that night's t.v. premier of Martyn Hesford's play about Kenneth Williams.

Privately, Fred was much more unguarded of his opinions about his dancing partners. He once mentioned Cyd Charisse as his favorite, which naturally got back to Ginger. That's why he had to make special mention to her.

I wonder who KW left his diaries to? Is this something he would want done with them? To me he sounds like he was a complete bi polar. Very cruel man with his tongue, very funny as well of course. I honestly feel he created his own strange little prison which he could control. It was of his making. He was also a complete narcissist. All of those truly dreadful issues before they were ever known of, in those years, his homosexuality, repressed, just shrieked of an early death. All very nice for us the audience but terrible shame fir his own life.

Fred Astaire narrated an amazing Christmas classic. Hearing the man brings nostalgia. Later I learned his dancing and just an amazing man.

Just goes to show how the BBC has changed when near the end Nicholas Parsons is referring merely to Kenneth's parental relationship and suddenly the gay oppression agendas comes stomping in to explain it. What is certain is that Kenneth Williams would have hated what the BBC has become, and would have said so in the dairies.

Thanks so much for uploading the full show, David. I always wanted to see it as was a bit too young to take myself to the theatre back then to see a show under my own initiative. I am very glad to have seen it this evening. Very moving and memorable and I can relate to a great deal of the things you express and explore in the show. A classic piece of theatre. Bravo!

Indeed. It starred Vanessa Regrave as the gang's ring-leader, so it was 'inspired by' the story rather than an attempt to give an accurate account of what allegedly happened.
