Rambler 134 'Idleness a miserable and anxious state' Samuel Johnson

The one -hundred and thirty-fourth and among the most celebrated of Samuel Johnson's classic Rambler essays. It deals with the subject of procrastination with immediacy and an insight born of bitter experience: Johnson was a world-class procrastinator and according to his biographer W. J. Bate: 'It is typical that one of the best discussions in English of idleness and procrastination (No. 134) could be “hastily composed,” according to Mrs. Thrale, “in Sir Joshua Reynolds's parlour, while the boy waited to carry it to the press.”'
