Good video. For the small springs, I use a flat head screwdriver about 1/4-1/2 the diameter of the hole the springs go in to. Catch the bottom hook of the spring with the screwdriver and put the screwdriver in the hole. Slowly guide the spring into the hole using the screwdrivers leverage to stretch the spring. When it gets into the hole, tap it gently with a hammer to seat the spring.. Some may say it's dangerous because occasionally a spring will go flying but it's the same risk with the vice grips.

Repairs for Oats.. Nice job. Looks like it could be a pain but didn't look that bad. Just search TH-cam, I'm sure there are a lot videos of different ways of doing it.. Thanks for sharing.

I just use a thin screwdriver that can bend a little bit. I place the screwdriver through the hook of the spring and the tip of the screwdriver in the hole where the spring goes then push down and the spring will go into the hole take the screwdriver out and then use vice grips or some pliers to put the spring all the way in it will usually be sticking out a little bit

I'd like to make a suggestion. Get you a cheap harbor freight long pry bar and cut a decent notch in the middle of the tip. Similar to a claw. When you did this style of brakes, it's easier to put the small springs on first, then use that prybar underneath the s cam to hook and pull in the big return spring to its home, then pry up on the shoes and insert the rollers.. it requires a little practice but it's my preferred method for the Eaton style brakes. Regular Bendix brakes, those springs aren't bad and vice grips can be used. Also.... please use jack stands, I wouldn't trust that chain with my life.

I do it the way you are talking about amd it does sound odd at the description but it makes more sense once you see some one do it

Hey bro the easiest way ive done those springs is with a brake spring tool #LT895 by lock technologies the ones i have are pretty much similar to those literally takes like seconds for both springs theres different sizes for different springs

I work on a fleet of logtrucks and these people that say snapon isn't worth the money have no idea of the rust and dirt factor and jobs like this will eat cheap tools I've broken matco rachets but the snapon rachet was just wore out when it broke now I work on cars to and you can get by with cheap tools but I'm sure in the rust belt cheap tools won't last

There is an actual prybar with a curve and a tab for putting this type of spring on. When you are putting those 2 springs on, always pull out away from brake slightly to get that spring around the pivot point, then push in. Makes it much easier. Great job otherwise!

I'll definitely look into getting one. Do you know what it's official name is?
