Changing a Drag Link on a Peterbilt 379

Today I'll run you through a step by step procedure to changing a drag link on a 379. As far as I know all 379's have the same drag link as long as the truck has a Spicer axle.

    Geez man I hope this your own truck and not customers no offense. You never never never throw any heat at any steering component. You ruined the strength of the steal. If would have wrapped the sides of the pitman arm a few times and then the bolt, it will eventually pop out. Takes time. Secondly you way over torqued the castle nuts and now there’s another dangerous situation you don’t want with 80k behind you. Yes it’s true a 7/8 but takes 300 foot pounds but those castle nuts are to be torqued to a max of 160 foot pounds. It is clear as day in the spicer and meritor manuals. You just sat there with a impact and rapped and rapped and rapped away. I’ll bet they are 3 times over torqued. Hope you take this as constructive criticism

    • @RepairsforOats
      @RepairsforOats 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @shortthrow50 So I'll take it as constructive criticism. I'm curious as to what part of the country you're in because I'm in the northeast where everything is seized from salt and rust. I've always been told to heat those arms if they won't come loose after a couple minutes of sledge hammer work. Matter a fact I've seen a guy bend the arm where the pitman arm hooks into because he didn't use heat. As far as over torquing the castle nut goes I didn't know the torque spec so I'll say thank you for letting me know.

    Hey bro the easiest way ive done those springs is with a brake spring tool #LT895 by lock technologies the ones i have are pretty much similar to those literally takes like seconds for both springs theres different sizes for different springs

    Good video. For the small springs, I use a flat head screwdriver about 1/4-1/2 the diameter of the hole the springs go in to. Catch the bottom hook of the spring with the screwdriver and put the screwdriver in the hole. Slowly guide the spring into the hole using the screwdrivers leverage to stretch the spring. When it gets into the hole, tap it gently with a hammer to seat the spring.. Some may say it's dangerous because occasionally a spring will go flying but it's the same risk with the vice grips.

    I just use a thin screwdriver that can bend a little bit. I place the screwdriver through the hook of the spring and the tip of the screwdriver in the hole where the spring goes then push down and the spring will go into the hole take the screwdriver out and then use vice grips or some pliers to put the spring all the way in it will usually be sticking out a little bit

    There is an actual prybar with a curve and a tab for putting this type of spring on. When you are putting those 2 springs on, always pull out away from brake slightly to get that spring around the pivot point, then push in. Makes it much easier. Great job otherwise!

    I'd like to make a suggestion. Get you a cheap harbor freight long pry bar and cut a decent notch in the middle of the tip. Similar to a claw. When you did this style of brakes, it's easier to put the small springs on first, then use that prybar underneath the s cam to hook and pull in the big return spring to its home, then pry up on the shoes and insert the rollers.. it requires a little practice but it's my preferred method for the Eaton style brakes. Regular Bendix brakes, those springs aren't bad and vice grips can be used. Also.... please use jack stands, I wouldn't trust that chain with my life.

    I didn't see any battery testing, checking s-cams for wear or checking brake throws, clevis pin movement, draining air tanks and for stroke alert etc.. Missed that. And thought that safety checks was part of a routine PM.

    • @RepairsforOats
      @RepairsforOats 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The batteries are brand new and I did a lot of off camera work. As far as air tanks go the air dryer keeps them nice and dry. S-cams are generally only checked when changing brakes and I've only ever found 2 s-cams on our trucks that were bad.
