This video is just what I needed to start my Revell kit; I misplaced the instruction sheet several years ago, and was just on the verge of buying another new kit just to get the instructions. Thank you Sundborg, MJ
the smokestacks the whistle the big boy just looks amazing when it painted it looked so real it looked like a mini big boy 4000 the smokestacks and whistle looks realistic real
I also have a Revell Big Boy, but your's looks more neater than mine. For mine, paint is all over the place, and I didn't know how to get the stickers on, so I made my own stickers typed on the computer and printed out.
I'm not sure if you have figured this out, but to apply the decals, you can 'bubble cut' them out of the page, and fully submerge the decal in water for 5 seconds then take it out and put it on a paper towel. Wait about 30 seconds before taking the backing off and apply the decal. Hope this helps!
Does the model come in matte? I built one of these years ago and the plastic was very smooth and reflective. I'd prefer the matte if it came like that.
Out the box the parts are semi-gloss. I sprayed the spurs with a matt black primer (not in the video) before assembling the model. You can also add matt varnish afterwards.
Just watched another Video of this and He built it and ...ummm..that was it !! Now you take modeling seriously ! beautiful weathering !! Really turned out nice ! Good job bro!
Yeah, well it’s a display model. That’s why I generally prefer working model trains. It’s so satisfying to watch the wheels turn and the loco go to work. Have you checked out my models run on the Roco smartRail? th-cam.com/video/MoOoROmTdxg/w-d-xo.html
Hi Sundborg , I will check them out . I did a lot of work for DAPOL , an English company , who still produce the old AIRFIX models , from 50s and 60s -used to come in a little plastic bag with the instructions stapled to the top - If you look on their website all the plastic kits are built and painted by me-and a lot of the moulds are a bit tired ! Greetings from Wales .
Hello Wales. That is very cool! I wasn't familiar with DAPOL but it's very interesting. Built a lot of Airfix models as a kid. I like your weathering style.
I take it ya might have had an issue with the front hand railings fitting?. The front bottom pegs that bend foward a tiny bit, fit behind that front platform facing, not rest on top of the platform.
Gracias! Tu vídeo me sirvió de ayuda para un proyecto de Big boy casero, me costaba trabajo entender el mecanismo de los trucks, pero veo que es muy simple . Saludos
Well, the wheels turn until you glue on the coupling rods. It will, unfortunately, take quite a lot of adaption and kit-bashing to make the model run even if towed by another engine. It is essentially a static model :-/
did you spray it black or did you leave the black parts as they came from the box? Bought one for myself too, but still waiting for the time to put it together :P also is there any tutorial what exactly did you use for the "dirt and aging" effect?
Yes, I sprayed it mat black with a can of Rustolium from Ace Hardware. It’s not in the video because I didn’t know how to operate the camera and the spray can at the same time 😞The “dirt and aging” was done with weathering powders. You can find those in any model shop. I have done quite a few videos on how to weather train models after Big Boy so please explore my channel. Best of luck with your build - it is a very enjoyable model to put together 🚂
@@SundborgModelRailway thank you. I was looking at the revell black matt spray can. I was thinking about that option, and then doing all the coloring with the brush & revell colors. About the weathering, the problem is that where i live, there is no model shops :P just alone for the revell colors i had problem finding them
You can make the powders yourself from artist’s chalk - the dry type you can find in most paper stores. Black, white and burnt sienna goes a long way. You just scrape the chalk into powder with a knife or sandpaper. You will have to fixate it afterwards using a mat varnish.
The undercarriage is divide into different sections and some of the wheel-sets can actually move a little from side to side. That’s how the real engine can drive through track curves. In the video, you can see how the undercarriage is flexible before I mount the superstructure on it. This particular model can’t flex after it has been assemble however, it is only for display on a straight piece of track.
@@SundborgModelRailway I was just wondering cause I'll be getting my own bigboy kit a few days after my birthday so I was just curious if you need glue or not
I bought the paint in several different stores over several years. Depending on where you live buying the paint on line may be the best option. Try entering any of products or the serial number in Amazon and it will take you directly to the paint you need.
Thank you for your question. I have now added a list of the materials used in this video to the show notes. The list is: • Humbrol AA0120 11 Silver • Humbrol AA0415 38 Lime Green Gloss • Humbrol AA0610 56 Aluminium Metallic • Noch 61145 Weathering Powder Set • Rustoleum spray paint, 2X Paint + Primer, Flat Black • Vallejo 70.926 Red • Vallejo 70.950 Black (diluted to make a wash)
Project sounds even better now! The Revell case is less detailed than you would see with most running models but maybe you can transfer some of the details from the damaged model?
My daughter and son-in-law got me this exact model for father’s day, so now I’ve got some good info when I do the build.
Happy Farther’s Day! Hope you’ll enjoy the build.
@James Ross I'm getting a drb class 41 maybe
Given one of these sets for a Xmas gift , aged 68 with tremors in left hand. This promises to be fun
That’s a great gift! The assembling is not too tricky so it should be a good holiday project 🚂

Glad the video was of help to you. It’s a fun build - you’ll enjoy it.
I like how everything just snaps together an models like these it avoids the stress of using glue
Yes, major parts snap together but I think it is still a good idea to secure small details with a drop of glue.

I have that model sitting on a shelf in my workshop. Put it together 30 years ago.
That's longevity for you! It is an interesting model :-)
Thank you for this video. It will help me to build my favorite locomotive : Big Boy.
Glad I could help
Very nice work. Really nice Big Boy. I'm also finishing this model so I'm looking for all the available information and so I found your video 😎👍
Glad you liked the video and found it useful for your project. 👍🚂
So beautiful
Thank you! 😃🚂
@@SundborgModelRailway you’re welcome
I just purchased this for my 12 year old brother, who is quite the model train enthusiasts. Hopefully it is not terribly difficult. Thanks for sharing
It’s not hard - a 12 year old can absolutely do it. It is mostly snap together.
@@SundborgModelRailway thank you for the feedback. I will definitely refer him to your video for help if need be.
Nice big boy you have there
Thanks! It was a fun project 🚂
I have alwayse dreamed of having the HO scale big boy... and I still am

Nice! I hope to do something like this in the near future.
Great job on the paint work

Nice build! I'm here because I just ordered that same kit
Have fun! Send me a picture of your finnished model :-)

How hard is the big boy to build as never build n e that scale before n looks interesting to build??
It’s not hard. Pieces mostly snaps together and there are very few small parts. Enjoy!
I need the liquid "Micro Set" - microsolution for decals, used in this video. Can anyone help me find it? Thanks!
Yes you do :-) This was actually the first time I used it and I was surprised how well it worked.
Great job like the video the Big boy is my favorite train
Big Boy is awesome!
Did you use glue? I have it!
Yes, I used glue. Hope you will enjoy the building process. It's a fun model :-)
Just like building 2 locos ! Pity the wheels turn but the rods don't ! Like my Hudson . Nice as static model, or even as scenery . Wales UK.

there is a Revell BR01 kit
I know! I would very much like to check it out. Have you build it?
i’m thinking about buying this for the boy scout railroading merit badge!

Hi. Very good video and lokomotiv.

Did you use any kind of glue while you were putting the locomotive together
I used a little plastic glue, but the kit can actually be assembled without any glue.
@@SundborgModelRailway I was just wondering cause I'll be getting my own bigboy kit a few days after my birthday so I was just curious if you need glue or not
is it possible to make the rods move with the wheels cause i don't think they do
The model is static. It will take a substantial rebuild to make the rods move.
I kitbashed one into a DM&IR 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone in 1984.
That sounds like a fun project. Any pictures?
Where did you get the paints for the model that are listed in the description
I bought the paint in several different stores over several years. Depending on where you live buying the paint on line may be the best option. Try entering any of products or the serial number in Amazon and it will take you directly to the paint you need.
Super fin modelkit. ser godt ud din weathering.
Tak for rosen :-)
Very nice!
Thanks!
what music you use
The music in this video is a standard iMovie tune, but I usually use music from this fantastic site: www.youtube.com/@FreesoundMusic
wait, is it recommended to paint to edges of the wheels, since most big boy locomotives appear to lack that feature?
You can if you want a more glossy look. Museum engines like 4006 Big Boy have white lining on them so it won't really make a difference if you do.
great job
Thanks. Glad you liked it 🚂
1/87 scale i believe?
Exactly! 🚂
what humbrol colors should i use?
Hey! What paint You use (chrome looking) ?
It is aluminum no. 56 from Humbrol. I used a silver colour for the wheel rims and the steering, but I think the aluminum works better.
@@SundborgModelRailway thanks for Your reply. Awesome work!

Thank you for your question. I have now added a list of the materials used in this video to the show notes. The list is:

Do the wheels move?
No, the wheels don’t move when the model is finished ☹️
Amazing!
Thx!
Shouldn't you weather the drive train?Should be almost black with grease
Good point. The drive train is probably the most greasy part of a steam engine.
Should compare this to a RTR one.
The model is quite simple and will not stand up to real working models from well-known manufactures. But it is much cheaper and a fun build.
А можно его модель купить в Россию?. Я фанатка этого паровоза😊❤
I don't know if you can buy the model in Russia theses days, but it is readily available on eBay and similar sites. It is a fantastic locomotive!!!

FUN! ❤️❤️Big Boy
It was a lot of fun to build!
Sunborg MJ
Question, it says its 1:87 scale or H0 scale, but will it work on H0 scale track?
Just curious.
Yes, the model fits H0 scale tracks. However, it’s a stationary model so all it can do it look good on the layout :-)
How would it cope if pushed by another loco on the layout?
How long did this take to build?
Sorry, can’t remember. The build itself was quick, painting and weathering took longer. You can probably do in an evening.
Very cool!
Thank you!
Congratulations, it's hard to building that
Thanks. Actually, the set is not that complicated to build. Give it a try! 🚂

@@SundborgModelRailway alright i am making it with snowy. Do you have instagram i am gonna post it there

It is actually for most parts ‘snap-together’, but I would definitely recommend gluing some of the minor parts too like the hand rails.
I like the trains! !!!!
So do I :-D
I own a big boi revell to. It has no paint. I had to watch a few other videos until I found a vid that shows how to do a decal
