When Manute came into the Hockey Arena area of the old Boston Garden he was walking on a 6" platform that I couldn't see. That placed him at over 8' relative to me. I reacted just like this woman, my jaw just dropped. It was like a man on a ladder nearly 2 full feet taller than me. Even after he stepped off the platform I was roughly about chest height next to him. I mean 7'7" he was a full head taller than Robert Parish (7') and Bill Walton (6'11"). It was then that I decided it was time to hit the books and that a career in professional basketball was going to be just a touch out of reach for me.
I stood next to the guy when he was playing for the Austin Spurs G-League team. I was 5-10 at the time and had to break my neck to look up. At least now he's only a foot taller than me.
