Hi Robert. Please! for heaven's sake don't think about packing up your channel!! You have helped me on so many things to do with my Volvo V70 Mk1 1998 2.5 Estate. I think you are a very kind, and generous man. Please keep going. Richard South Wales ( UK )
Thanks Robert. I bought and installed the Becker catback. I couldn’t figure out how to disconnect the o2 wire. Started getting really mad about it. They put the second o2 inlet 12-13” to far. Had to splice the sensor wires to compensate for the 12”+. The flanges fit well but the 3 holes I had to drill to 3/8” and the tailpipe rubber supports didn’t fit either. I will make it work. I also got the RIP kit from IPD like you suggested. Installed already. The 99 s70 2.4 should be happy now! But anyway, thanks for all the advice and awesome videos you share. I really appreciate it a lot. You’re the Man. Your friend from Canada.
Hi Robert, Love your channel and thanks for the information you provide! I just replaced a new (cheap) aftermarket o2 sensor for a OEM sensor because of the p0133 code. Problem solved. Use original or OEM sensors else diagnostics will go nowhere. Volvo's are very sensitive in my experience!
But then again, I’m ordering Bosch universal fit. Where you splice the wires Into a small, waterproof spice housing. Those should be an excellent alternative especially with that name behind it.
Thank you sir. This looks to be an easy job but still happy to find your video just to be sure I am not missing something. Glad to see the bit on the connection as that may have fought with me. With your videos I will have cleared all my codes.
It is suggested that both oxygen sensors should always be replaced at the same time, do you think that is un necessary and only the front or upstream one?
Looks like I answered my own question. Only the upstream sensor will effect gas mileage. And the replacing in pairs thing was only for cars that have more than one oxygen sensor on the same bank for instance 2 upstream. I bought the Bosch universal fit where you have to splice the wires. Not a problem for me, that actually saves all the labor on doing the wire harnesses! Typically anything with that brand name should be reliable quality as far as I know… Anyone correct me if I’m wrong!
Well, from my manual, looks like the rear oxygen sensor might affect fuel economy as well. Just to a lesser degree, and it doesn’t fail as often because it’s in a cleaner stream of air I guess? Rear oxygen sensor (HO2S) Certain systems have 2 oxygen sensors (HO2S). The second sensor (8) is then position downstream of the three-way catalytic converter (TWC). The purpose of the rear oxygen sensor (HO2S) is to provide even finer adjustment of the quantity of fuel. Furthermore the control module is able to check the efficiency of the three-way catalytic converter (TWC). This is done by comparing the signals from both the sensors
Not sure what you mean by that?. Anyway, just testing to see if my mileage goes up after installing the upstream. Part of me wants to just replace the downstream anyway. I’m not getting any codes anywhere though. Maybe the one at the bottom wouldn’t matter until the system tests it as bad? The actual Bosch O2 sensor where you splice existing wires was on sale at rock auto for like US$38. That’s the brand of sensor that Volvo uses.
Hi Robert, can you pls do something on P80 catalytic converter problems? Do they throw codes even when there is nothing wrong with them, due to burning oil or a fuel mixture problem? Thanks!
My 850 R gets too much gas, it smells gas when I floor it, and it smokes black, the exhaust tips get all black and dirty, and so does my spark plugs. I dont see any warning lamps, so I can't be sure if I have an error code for either Maf sensor or this o2 sensor. Do you think they could be the source to my problem? The car has a stage1 tune in it also.
How many o2 sensors does a 1998 Volvo 2.5 turbo have? If more than one, which one should I replace? I have no check engine light on but my gas mileage is worthless.
Hey Robert my 02 sensor on my volvo S70 fell off, there no threads at all, kinda weird its just hanging on there. Also if I were to get a new one there is nothing to thread onto because there's just a hole and no threads where the sensor goes.
@RobertDIY I believe it's the front one it's the one under the hood. The well fell off where the sensor threads on. I think I just have to take well off of sensor and re-weld it.
I went to my 1999 Volvo s70 just to take an initial look for that Oxygen sensor. After raising the hood and looking at the engine, can I see it, or see some of the cable about which area ? Front rigtht, mid rear ? What is it near? If I can see it from the bottom underneath ? Thank You!!!
Hi robert, changed an o2 sensor and it did not helped, the fuse of the sensor are ok, but negative pin ar giving me a 8.** Volts and on other sensor negative pin giving me a 12.**volts with ignition on engine off ,wires are ok, is it possible that ecu went bad?
I am getting code Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1) Oxygen Sensor. Will this work for that? I am not finding any info kn how to fix that code. Thanks Robert.
Yo bro I got a 1998 V70 b5254t and there is 3 holes in total for 02 sensors? is that a fault or am I just dumb? there is one directly after the turbo and 2 in the pipes. and what I saw is you have 3 plugs too? or am I dumb? hope for your answer bro
Hello Robert, on o2 sensor signal wire it should be only the signal from sensor? Because I´ve got 2,9 to 4,7V on the wire even if the engine is off and ignition on. Car is running extremely rich, backfiring, fuel in oil... I have installed air/fuel ratio gauge and its on richest all the time. I cutted of the wire before the connector to sensor and the voltage is not going from sensor, not from gauge it is propably from ECU. Today I will trace the cable and cut it off close to ECU and if it´s going directly from ecu pin propably is ECU faulty and somehow voltage in that circuit finds a way to spoil the o2 signal! Is it possible to repair this? because is felix 5,2 10v volvo 850 and propably I will not find someone who sells that ECU in my location... Never saw any old volvo on a salvageyard in Slovakia!
@@RobertDIY Thank you. Already find out it was that fuel/air ratio gauge I´ve installed. Somehow it is spoiling the o2 signal. Gauge is ,,Depo racing,, brand, if someone finds it helpful. BTW I find out that the voltage on sensor is normal. It is the ECU reference value of voltage, propably the same like on throttle position sensor. Maybe the voltage is there for purpose of fuel trims regulation by ECU.
I have a P013x code with the check engine light on 2000 S70 , these O2 sensors from denso are so expensive usually over 200$ but just got lucky and found a genuine denso 234-9020 sensor on ebay for 108$ or so. I hope this will make the check engine light go away so i can finally get the car smogged and registered. The sensor on my S70 is a 4 wire not a five wire sensor. I just don't understand why the 4 wire sensor is more expensive than the five wire sensor from denso. California is such a pain fir smog tests
Well my good sir... I have a code P0420 on my 2004 XC70 and was told by mechanic to replace both O2 sensors first... will replace in 2 weeks but I did my PCV box and hoses 7 months ago and still getting fumes coming from oil cap and oil dipstick tube
Thanks Robert.... I've decided to change my Volvo specialist and i'll do a compression test and my banjo bolt passage might be blocked... past owner used regular conventional engine oil
If you happen to have a 1997 all-wheel-drive turbo that sensor can only be gotten with about 18 inches worth of extenders to the o2 sensor offset socket and a breaker bar. you have to remove the intake hose that goes from the air box to the turbo to get to it. I even had to remove the airbox cover, and it was still an angle I could just get to. . There’s no way in hell to take a short wrench and break that thing By trying to just reach underneath or in the confined space from the top. Wish I could post a picture of that. You have to disconnect the 3 hoses from the PTC valve and its heater/electric connector, move the brake fluid sensor wire, and the one underneath out-of-the-way, take the EGR valve vacuum hose out of the way, Disconnect the airbox cover and maf sensor and pull out the large intake hose just leave it attached to the airbox end. Then you can reach in and break that thing loose!

Yes, no.

There is only 1 bank so it's the first sensor after the exhaust manifold.

Ouch! The front or rear sensor? The front sensor goes into the cat, the rear in the exhaust. If it's the rear, they can weld another bung in it.
@RobertDIY I believe it's the front one it's the one under the hood. The well fell off where the sensor threads on. I think I just have to take well off of sensor and re-weld it.
On a 98 xc. With the Lambda Sond, dash light on. Is that O2 sensor related?
