Yeah, I noticed that too. Apprehended or not, the guy murdered his wife EVEN in the good ending! I'm not aware of a Silent Hill protagonist who's that bad regardless of the player's in-game decisions.

Does it matter what the protagonist did? I mean we are playing a game we're not affected by the characters storyline and life besides the events unfolding through but still a character is a character and not every one of them needs to be a hero to enjoy it's narrative

That's exactly where my mind went. Even in the good ending where he did it because he couldn't stand to watch her suffering, there are bits and pieces of the game that don't exactly make him out to be 100% a nice guy either (a lot of objectification of women going on in his mind there, don'tcha think?).

It was then delayed for almost a year to add a single player story mode and some new things, while still having a small budget because of the project.
In no ways does survive really hint on the future of the serie and can be judged like a main game (would be like comparing metal gear acid to mgs3 back then) , the game actually had a pretty good supports from the dev (even if some things were never implemented in the game brcause they probably knew the game wasn't going to be popular.)
In the end, survive is just a small spin off and that's it. It's not a main game and didn't "killed the serie".

Tomm Hulett's kind of a tragic figure. Matt talked about this somewhat, but basically, he jumped into Silent Hill because he was a massive fan of the first three games, and he stayed because he wanted there to be SOMEBODY on these projects who understood the appeal of the franchise, but it seems his lasting impact was to have the franchise die a slow and lingering death instead of just crashing into the ground like Final Fight or other once-famous IPs that vanished. He was barely able to talk Konami out of having a big DBZ-style energy duel between Alessa Gillespie and Joshua Shepherd in Silent Hill Homecoming, to give an example of how bad it was.
And because he was the self-appointed face of most of the post-Team-Silent games, fans sent all the hatred and harrassment his way, blaming the guy for everything that went wrong in the series. Guy had to quit because it was all too much.

Tomm was dealt a really bad hand and could only play it for so long. The combination of tomm being the front man for the silent Hill franchise and the fact that Konami is a crap company made for a really bad mix. Luckily for Tomm, he would go on to another studio and make some really good games from what I have heard.
Although if Tomm's silent Hill games weren't just copies of the plot of silent Hill 2 every time. Both homecoming and downpour are more or less just silent Hill 2 with different characters. Apparently, Tomm and his friends had an obsession with silent Hill 2. Silent Hill 2 is my personal least favorite of the first 3 games, so I might be a bit biased against it.

@@NisseDood Indeed Capcom has turned things around, but still has some questionable logic. DMC 5 being the most succesful and widely praised in the series after only a few months, but not worth getting DLC for example. Despite completely exceeding Capcoms own unrealistic expectations. The one time Capcom refuses to make DLC is the one time people are demanding it.
Maybe all these collections mean Konami is trying to pull a Capcom and see what properties and gameplay styles are worth bringing back. Or maybe they are just trying to piggyback on the Bloodstained hype with the Castlevania ports.

Yeah, i enjoyed Downpour a lot more than Homecoming overall. It definitely had some major issues though, like all of the Otherworld chase sequences, should have made more of an effort to personalise it to Murph's situation. Same as the monster designs being lazy. Atleast they didn't just go back to sexy nurses so that's a bonus i think. They missed a trick by not being with sexy demon policewomen instead though haha. Would have been cool though if Downpour's otherworld was more prison like.
I also feel the story had major issues because of the entire branching paths thing, while all Silent Hill games have loads of different endings in general the characters and storyline follow one path and then a few select choices nearer the end decide what ending you get, or depending on what optional side things you did. While in Downpour it felt like they couldn;t tell a proper story or develop a strong lead character because they had to always a account for all of these choices you made.

I don't think you're giving evil within 2 enough credit, it's such a tightly woven package. Downpour has a lot of flaws that can't easily be fixed even if it feels close to being a good game. The story is the biggest disappointment for me and I doubt that would've changed. It was a neat idea having the part change depending on your actions but it makes for a story that's so much weaker and less focused, not to mention the morale decisions are really lame.

My pitch for better monster themes:
Bug based, particularly centipedes and ticks (think of the tick-covered snakes in Bloodborne.) Murphy’s son was lost while camping. Bugs are also grabby and invade your personal space, which ties into, yknow (google what exactly happened to Murphy’s son.)
Grabby hands and fingers, self explanatory. Bugs made of hands. Drooling mouths.
Leeches. His son drowned and the man who did it is a parasite.
    Water spewing monsters, self explanatory.
Monsters that cry and scream like children. Again, self explanatory.
Basically focus on the horror of losing one’s child in such a horrible way. That’s way scarier than going to prison. Drop the whole prison thing entirely cause it’s stupid. Send Murphy to Silent Hill just over his guilt and depression over not being able to protect his son. He doesn’t deserve it, cause it’s not his fault, but that doesn’t matter to Silent Hill. All that matters is you think you deserve the punishment.
The boogy man, instead of being someone’s Pyro loadout, should be an ever-changing thing that you never get a good look at. Maybe it has a blurry face. It represents how Murphy views the man who killed his son, who in this version, was never caught. Murphy has no closure on this issue.

    • @CrazyPangolinLady
      @CrazyPangolinLady 5 ปีที่แล้ว +37

The prison theme could work if they made Murphy more of a hardened life-long criminal, and a bit of an asshole. And the story could be completely reworked into how he became that way. As it is in the actual game, Murphy basically chose to go to prison, and was more or less a regular guy before that. Which holds no weight.
For it to work, it’d have to have commentary on how and why people become criminals. Murphy could still be sympathetic this way, but having truly terrible things. Themes could include poverty, abuse, desperation, all things that contribute to a person likely growing up to become a criminal.

He was a really nice guy, had an interesting approach to how he went about creating sounds for the music he wrote (most prominently featured more in his work on Dexter but as he pointed out, his experimentations on it did carry over into other projects when he felt the inspiration) and he absolutely knew when he got contacted about Downpour that fans were going to be breathing down his neck because "Yamaoka senpai"/etc. and he mentioned then that he wanted to try to blend a bit of what fans of the series were accustomed to hearing with his own style and I think he succeeded fairly well in that regard. He was a pretty good composer in general and it's a shame he's no longer around.

Going back to this, I couldn't help but think that Downpour's idea of using a convict in which player choices, during gameplay, defined their past. Stuff like this scenario and whether they are a killer, or maybe even innocent of the suspected crime, came from Midway's "The Suffering", released 8 years before this game. For a new horror series, it worked out pretty well, as it was establishing as that series' specific identity.
The more this video described the idea behind the game, the more like "The Suffering" it sounded like.

He felt so much more deep and emotional then most of the protagonists, except maybe for James. Although most of the protagonists were intentionally a bit bland so as to let the player better identify with them, Murphy felt like he wasn’t as bland and he also had much better writing then Alex did (although that wouldn’t be hard).

But all it did was make things worse. These brands were already established so fans were then alienated and no one from outside the fanbase really even care about the game. @@thepickles8833 I partially agree with you that it was odd for Murphy Pendleton to encounter the Doll enemies, despite their symbolism being heavily linked to Anne Cunningham... However, let it not be forgotten that protagonists in the past have encountered similar/relative creatures or monsters linked to someone else's psyche... This can be said about James Sunderland battling Angela Orosco's Abstract Daddy, the multiple iterations of the Nurse through almost every entry as well as creatures tied to the Red Pyramid and it's other appearances in Arcade and Sinner's Reward, namely the Butcher from Origins and both Bogeyman entities from Homecoming and Downpour, etc.
Sure, many of these creature appearances can be chalked up to the creature design teams being lazy... But it's been a common occurrence even when Team Silent worked on the franchise....
I'd be lying though if I didn't say the monster design had definitely felt lacking, if the design team behind Origins or even Homecoming had come back to work on Downpours monsters, I feel that they'd been better received.
And as for the technical side of Murphy fighting Anne's creatures: the game had originally been envisioned as a co-op multiplayer game, where Murphy and Anne would've worked together to escape Silent Hill... Obviously, the ambitious nature of this game for Vattra was killing them, and it'd been scrapped early on, opting for the scrapped DLC mentioned in the video.

Especially considering this is not the only time vocals have been used. Even with Yamaoka at the helm, vocal tracks appeared even during the game. Besides, it's a good song and fits the narrative. It's on the official soundtrack to Downpour and I suggest everyone give it another listen.

Ya know, I actually really liked Downpour. It was a step up from Homecoming in my opinion and it was a decent story. Gameplay was different from most of the series but I was immediately hooked with its dark and yet beautiful story

I have to admit I actually quite liked Downpour.
For the standards we expect from a Silent Hill game, yeah it wasn't up to expectations, but considering this was the first (and only) big game the development team ever worked on, it had an interesting story, some good concepts, and felt the most 'Silent Hill-y' of the post SH4 Silent Hill games.
Although that being said I do think Shattered Memories was the better game overall.

I live in France and the game was supposed to release in february there. I remember back in the day I went to my local video game store when the day came and the guy said that he didn't received any game and it was still planned for this day and that he had no news about anything. Several days later we both learned that the game was pushed back to the end of march (in Europe at least) without any sort of official and clear communication. And when I got back there he received the game this time but everything was already sold since he got only TWO f*****ing copies of it. It's totally crazy how KONAMI fucked up everything about this game's marketting...

You should do something on "Empire of the Deep", which was supposed to be the Chinese response to "Avatar", filmed in 2010 and despite a budget that ranges between 150-300 million, has yet to be released... but the leaked trailer looked glorious in its own way. It had like 4 directors throughout filming, lots of horror stories amongst the cast and crew and is a fascinating subject.

as sad as it is, atleast they created some masterpieces , even P.T. left a huge mark on the horror genre . The town is still here forever

I thought a Nu Metal take on Silent Hill's music was an interesting and possiblly good idea but I think the issue was it just didn't have that silent hill je ne sais quoi to it. More wailing guitars and having a pianist would've punched it up a fair bit

Silent Hill Downpour was one of those games that a longtime fan like me really tried and wanted to love. It's too bad that it didn't work out. Regardless of the mistakes that were made in development, I have no doubt that a lot of people involved worked very hard and cared deeply about creating a title worthy of the Silent Hill brand. I think our first instinct should be to empathize with them as opposed to criticize and I think Matt did a good job of both with this review.

this game didnt need to be a silent hill, couldve been titled something else.
But at the same time, the evil within 2 and the medium couldve easily been titled Silent Hill (whatever) and it wouldve fit in with all the other non-numbered SH's.
Also, I liked downpour, played and beat it at least twice. Homecoming can piss off! thanks for the content!

Is a good game, but as Konami ordered VAtra on so much things, that much of the game they had literally to beg to be put on, that Matt for some reason didn't wanted to say. wasn't so that well executed
