    Yamaha Portasound PSS-780 and PSS-580 MusicStation FM keyboards (1989)
    The PSS-780 and PSS-580 were a cosmetic update to the PSS-680 and PSS-480 which had come out the previous year - the 780 also added a few new rhythm patterns and a pointless re-numbering of all the voices, but they all have the same sounds.
    This series of keyboards has a 2 operator FM synth on board, which can be edited via the limited Digital Synthesizer parameters on the front panel. More than that, it also has Midi In and Out (as well as Midi Thru on the 680 and 780) which gives you the capability to link keyboards to each other and to other gear, as well as access even more parameters via MIDI SysEx messages; editing software exists to modify and build your own patches.
    All synth sounds you hear in this track come from the 580 and 780 and custom patches were made using Martin Tarenskeen's excellent PSS panels for Ctrlr. ctrlr.martintar...
    All the patches from this track and my other keyboard demos featuring the 580, 680 and 780 can be downloaded free from my website, www.alfonsemus...

    It is wonderful. Some people often look down on using automatic accompaniment, but since the auto-base chord function is a proud feature of PSS, I think you can use it to some extent even if it is original.

      @@alfonsemusic I bit the bullet and bought my own PSS-780. It arrived in less than stellar condition (I've got a twitter thread going with some very graphic horror, perfect for October), but it's 100% functional and that's what matters. Much appreciated for enabling my addiction mate. This is sure to become a key part of my production loadout :D

    I admit I do sorta miss my PSS-780, despite now having a Motif 6, MODX6+ and a Sequential Pro 3 SE. Since selling it back in the mid 90s, I wish a kept it and circuit bent it. Also nice to have something with batteries and speakers to mess with anywhere. Although, Novation Launchkey mini and laptop with Ableton Live and V Collection isn't bad.

      Layered up in a DAW, but each part was played on both keyboards simultaneously (except the RX11 drums, obvs...), either using MIDI connections or one keyboard per hand.

    If the PSS-780 has a drum programming function, then why involve the RX-11?

    • @alfonsemusic
      @alfonsemusic  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just for variety. The kick and snare sounds are way better than the 780's kick and snare and I'd already done videos for the PSS-680, PSS-580 and the 780 on its own.

  • @jaytee200

    Really great video and tune, and really shows how fantastic and powerful those FM keyboards were, considering they were more of a toy than a synth. I had a 780 as a teenager and sold it and got a 790 shortly after they came out. That went too when I upgraded to a proper synth once I started earning money. Amazingly, I managed to find a 780 in brilliant condition and great price a few months back. I was searching for one because I came across some of my old Amiga discs which had tunes I had sequenced on Dr Ts for the 780 and the 790 and I wanted to hear what they sounded like played on the proper keyboard. Only yesterday I managed to pick up a 790 also in amazing condition for just £40. It’s been great messing about with both of them. Takes me right back 😊

    • @alfonsemusic
      @alfonsemusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! I had a (actually this exact) 580 back in the day, but was gutted my parents didn't buy me the 780... That's a great time capsule that you still have sequenced tracks for them in the archive.

    • @alfonsemusic
      @alfonsemusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very nice price! I liked it, myself - some unusual FM presets and the drum pads are a good addition. There are plenty of far less interesting or useful keyboards of that size.

      Hi Frank. I think Keen On Keys has you covered with his 3rd video on the PSS480 - he shows how to use Ctrlr there and the panel is essentially the same as for the 780. Skip to about 3:20 and hopefully you'll find what you need. th-cam.com/video/2TfpcAmaPGg/w-d-xo.html
