"The aim of these videos is to see what you can create using sounds from ageing home keyboards together with current production tools." Well, to say you reached that aim an understatement, Alfonse 👍
The beauty of those old machines, yes they were dry on their own, but with a DSP unit, they really come to life. I still have my old 680. I use it as a controller.
Amazing again! And you are playing, so brilliantly I must say, my favourite all time PSS keyboard,. I love the sounds and rhythms on this little beauty and even though I do have its bigger brother, the 680, I just somehow prefer the sound of this keyboard and it’s compact design. Another brilliant composition sir, you really know how to make theses fab little keyboards shine.
My first ever keyboard. Wonderful to hear it brought to multi-timbral life now. I actually run it ok from a QY10 sequencer. I am now bidding on a 680 - gotta have those dope pads! :=P
Wow, you're really making this little kid-keyboard shine here! Love the metallic FM synth sounds! People always complain they sound like garbage as many early DOS-Adlib games did but if you know how to properly program these babies they can sound really sick! Love my DX27 as well, just like all my other YM synths (like my OPM, OPL(&2 &3) and OPLL). They all have their very own personality in terms of sound. This PSS-580 was my first synth and though I gravitated more towards analog synths I still own it and I love it. Thumbs up for your excellent videos!
Hmmm... over 1000 subscribe and over 5000 views, nearly 200 likes and not a single dislike (there's *always* at least one idiot who lies to be a contrarian)... not too bad for an off-mainstream independent artist if you ask me :)
YAMAHA! The power of music in your hands! I have the PSS480 which just has a few less drum sounds, but same everything else. A true power house of a little keyboard!
Mint tune honestly all from this Just got a rarity the PSR 6300 and a PSS 140 so thinking i can make some killer Japanese style house stuff with those two, Your tempting me to get this thing to and the ones you can actually program
Nice, that 6300 is a cool find. Yes, the PSSs with modifiable synth parameters are well worth getting hold of, to tweak the sounds to your own prescription.
Not even the master of 80s keyboard demos was able to scrape the cheese off these early digital Casio beats. As much as I love their earlier analog percussion, this lifeless, wooden, knocking snare and the cheap hi-hat always puts me off. Kudos to still make an enjoyable song out of it :)
Wow it sounds just great! I was thinking about getting this keyboard as i am starting to learn music. Is it a nice keyboard for a beginner? Also, is there a way you can connect it with a computer?
It was a nice keyboard for a beginner back in the 80s - you might have more fun now with the PSS a50 which Yamaha brought out a year or so ago. That connects to a computer via USB so you can easily use it as a midi controller. With the 580 you would have to use midi cables and you'd need an audio interface with midi ports linked to your computer.
This sounds amazing, thank you for posting. Just picked up a nice one of these, on ebay. In order to link it up to my laptop, is there a specific interface and cables required?
You can use old school midi cables with an audio interface that has midi ports, or buy either a midi interface (eg subzero 4x4) or a midi to usb cable. For the audio, I used a stereo splitter cable from the headphone out on the keyboard to inputs 1 and 2 on my audio interface.
I'm not sure if I've understood your question correctly, but the PSS-580 only remembers your custom sounds etc when it is hooked up to a power source - if you unplug the cable or take out the batteries for a while, the memory will return to the original factory settings.
Thanks. :) It only has a headphone out, so I plug the single stereo end of a Y splitter cable into the headphone socket of the keyboard and the other two ends into mono inputs on my audio interface.

Awesome !! Hello All ..... Good wishes from India ! Request if anyone can help me procure one PSS 480/580 and be imported to India INDIA . PLEASE !!!!!!
Hi there - it has midi in and out ports, so you need old-school midi cables to plug into those ports. If your audio interface doesn't have midi ports, you can buy cables like the Roland UM-ONE that are midi at one end and USB at the other.
I just got lucky with this, I think. Was fairly noise free. I sometimes use Izotope RX noise reduction to clean up recordings, but I don't think I needed it on this one
I sampled the drums and then messed with the samples a bit to get a less lo-fi sound, so it's not authentic, but it still comes from the 580. I was doing a bit more post-processing on this early batch of videos than on later ones.
Not fake, just polished up using EQ, compression and reverb. I also sampled and modified the drum sounds a little to fit the track better, so those aren't sounding very authentic, but still everything originated from the keyboard.

キーボードの性能を紹介したいのか、オリジナル曲を聴いてほしいのか、よく分からない動画です。
こういうタイプの作品は1回聴いただけで満足し、繰り返し聴きたいとは思わないんだよなぁ
This was way better than I imagined it would be when I clicked on the video. Wanted a snippet but stayed for the whole jam. What a vibe

A good musician will play any instrument with a good idea.
I can play a little too:

Nice. Yeah, the 680 is well worth it for the pads - synth toms...!
You are talented dude. I wasn’t expecting to experience so much from a keyboard video. You made a whole song!
Love it. I just bought a 480 and a 580
YOU ARE GREAT, BOSS OF KEYS, MASTER AND GUIDE OF POORS MANS, PRETTY AND FINE WORK
Thanks Leo - I'll have to add Boss of Keys to my biography...!

Cool, it was my first synth as well. Thanks for listening :)
Mate, this is ace, cannot understand why you don't have more views. Retro kit channels are really popular so just don't get it.
Agreed. Impeccable composition skills. I have a PSS480 and I could never do anything like this. Mental.

Wow. Top job. You have used effects so well on these sounds. Very impressed.
Thanks Niels. A nice reverb on those FM pluck / bell type sounds is always a winner.
Really inspiring. This keyboard was my first ever synthesizer and I got it as a kid for Christmas. I still own one to this day.
Same here...
me too, as an aspiring guitarist I used it to make backing tracks to play along to and record. Back in 1989.
Very nice job! Those Yamaha Portasound keyboards just rock and it shows that they are NOT just toy keyboards! :)
Very true - it's all about getting a sound that inspires, never mind if it's from a cheap keyboard.
@@alfonsemusic Exactly!
I have the 460 model. Nowhere near as nice as this model. Now I want this!
They each have their own sound. Both is an option...! :D
❤❤❤❤❤wow❤❤❤❤
When i saw this video I ran for brush up my Pss580!you are a really master!now I'm going to download the instruction of it
Cool! Glad it's inspired you to get involved. :)

Beautiful! I've got a 480 and I wouldn't part with it for anything!
Cool. I've had this one for many years. You never know when it may be needed...
I love PSS series... I love your videos... I love your PSS videos... THNX!
🙏🏻
È incredibile come riesci ad avere suoni e ritmi così belli da uno strumento non professionale di tanti anni fa. Sei bravissimo!
Grazie! :)
Too much the creativity!
Whicked tune , would like to use this as a intro to some of my TH-cam vids , cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
Sounds like I'm shopping at "The Gap"...

Oh wow!! I used to have this keyboard but you have made it sound so cool!!
Thanks :) I've had this one since I was a teenager...
Great show!
Very nice job .can i by this 570 ..580 keyboard please
Just bought one of these. Thought I learned guitar so naturally need to learn another instrument
Good place to start - this was actually my second keyboard when I started learning, back in the day...
So good
Thanks!

Well, the challenge I set myself was to just work with whatever's there - sometimes I do long for a nice Rhythm Composer, though...
F. D. The FM sounds are very solid though
Me encantó, y me lo acabo de comprar! Gracias!
You're welcome :)
foo!amazing!genius!
Thanks :)

I have a question I started to try many sounds on my piano and I was not sure how I do to put it back to traditional

hello alfonse nice video! i have the same synth, how do u do to record the audio in a daw?? which cable do i need? thankss!
Thanks. :) It only has a headphone out, so I plug the single stereo end of a Y splitter cable into the headphone socket of the keyboard and the other two ends into mono inputs on my audio interface.
I just bought this old keyboard too but i'm confused.. could you tell me how to record directly from keyboard to DAW?

A Focusrite soundcard and Logic Pro.

how do u manage to get the sound so clean? my pss480 is pretty noisy :(
I just got lucky with this, I think. Was fairly noise free. I sometimes use Izotope RX noise reduction to clean up recordings, but I don't think I needed it on this one
What power supply do you use for these?
A 9v adapter with a centre positive pin. I've been using a universal power supply that works well.
did you modify the output?
No, just plugged a stereo splitter cable into the headphone out
That's not the 580 drums? 🤔

Can I ask what types of processing you applied to the drums? They sound great
