Cool video! I was given a PSS-480 like 20 years ago- it's a blast! People see it and think it's a toy, but I have definitely done the deep dive with parameter manipulation on it, I swear nobody I've ever talked to has even heard of these before, so it's great to see it getting some love here.
Wrong Bing! the PSS-480 was my first synth! I used it with a Yamaha QX-21 two track sequencer! Made some banging tracks with it! Stored all my sequences via Cassette interface from the QX-21. The thing was a real musical synth instrument. It had full 16 midi channels 12 note poly! and full Midi in-out-thru. I loved it!
Ha yeah I had a QX sequencer for a while. Storing data on the cassettes was a particular challenge for some reason even though it's tech i grew up with so I'm familiar with the method. I had to track down a specific tape deck to get it to work properly 😄
Awesome model! I'm a big time PortaSound and PortaTone lover. The 80s and 90s models of Yamaha keyboards have so much personality, character and style! (Just like the Korg Workstations of 80s and 90s). Nowadays they mostly just produce digital plastic junk keyboards.
Thank you. Yeah love this era of home keyboard, they were really trying to offer something with some flexibility even if it was just a mini lofi synth.
@@ChrisLodyMusic Yes indeed, they tried hard and succeeded! The newer keyboards are often very boring, they offer nothing interesting! Unlike the 80s & 90s Yamaha & Korg keyboards for example.
I had a pss790 in the early 90s. It was awm not fm, had 5 octaves of mini keys. Full midi in out and thru. An 8 track 8 song sequencer. And a vector joystick for morphing between sounds. I used it with an Atari STFM and an alesis mmt8 for sequencing as it was 16 part multitimbral. And I could also do a sysex dump of the internal sequencer to the Atari. Oh happy days. Also you could use the pitchbend on the drums, and there was a way of reversing the bend so bending up lowered the pitch and vice versa.
I've seen those, they do look like fun so I'll grab one if I manage to find one for reasonable money. Yamaha knew how to make home keyboard equipment that was much more powerful than it needed to be back then 😄

Hello.. You know, in the last ten years, I've gone to great lengths to promote the old PSS/PSR FM Yamaha keyboards. I have lots of videos and modified units, right here in TH-cam. I absolutely learned some things from you today, and I greatly appreciate it! Thank you! Subbed.
SnowMetal No problem, glad I could help. Yeah I’ve been hoovering them up wherever I can find them. Yamaha did some great work cramming some really useable hardware into these tiny boxes back in the day. Shame I didn’t have one when I was growing up
Yay! Great tutorial! Please do more about Yamaha PSS-480. It was my first synth, lost in the past, but few months ago I have found one in thrashes :-) It was damaged, but I fix it (easy, broken power line) and now I'm again trying to learn how to use it...
FWIW, the PSS-580 was just a reissued PSS-480, in a different colour scheme. If you start one up in test mode, they both show 480 on the display - hold down the top/highest two keys, while you turn it on: stereoninjamusic.weebly.com/blog/hidden-test-mode-on-the-yamaha-pss-580-and-psr-48
Badass! Had the 480 when I was 14/15 made a whole album using the 5 part sequencer thingy, even did my performing arts gcse soundtrack on it. Sadly it passed away around 2010. ☹️
yep i found it at a yard sale without box nor alimentation, the keys are pretty yellowed and it makes a nasty static noise when turned on but everything else works properly. did you ever experienced such an issue ? i think it may come from the alimentation i use, even if it works perfectly with my good'ol PSS-270
Gerris Lacustris Do you mean power supply when you say alimentation? If so that could be an issue but they are a little bit noisy anyway, they tend to have a high frequency whistle when being used. But it might be worth trying batteries or another power supply and see if it makes any difference

Gerris Lacustris No problem. A bad power supply is most likely then. Batteries are the purest form of power so it'll sound it's least buzzy using them.
Hi very good production you are creating. I have a PSS-580 that is the same as the 480. I am attempting to play arpeggios from another keyboard and attempting to get the 580 to play arpeggios via midi but to no avail. I have midi out from the other keyboard that has arpeggios to midi in on 580. The midi signal is being received as when I play notes there is a response. Do you happen to know how I can have arpeggio play on the 580 from the other keyboard? Thank you.
Yeah that was me 😁 Ds10 was the reason I started my TH-cam channel actually. Nice work finding that 680, plenty of goodness still to be squeezed from them I'd say
Soz mate I may have asked you the question below but can’t remember as I have sent the message to a few folk who have the same type of set up. I’m trying to get my 580 to play the arpeggios from my mini Nova Novation synth that is a stunning synth to.
+bestrickie2 Hi. Yeah the 580 can do that as long as the novation can send the midi notes over midi. I’ve never used a nova so it’s worth checking the manual for that
Just an idea for a nicer (?) acid line. If you slow the 'record tempo' to something like 40bpm you could much easier punch-in almost steptime speed 16th notes; this would be a nicer pattern to then edit imo
Ha yeah I had one of those for a while, fun to use but damn they were a pain to edit things together 😄 Slowing down that much on the Pss is a good idea if it works for you but personally I find if I slow down too much I loose the rhythm completely and struggle to find my place
@@ChrisLodyMusic havent tried but i figured at such a low tempo one doesnt need to feel the tempo just count the 16ths (so count 32note entried for a 2bar loop) ...and hit random notes. Much like I did with the 303 sequencer. :D
Thank you. Yes I’m sure you can. There’s buttons in the auto accompaniment section to turn off various parts. If I remember correctly you can turn of Rhythm here before you record the melody to memory to chord memory and it’ll play without drum, I think!
Getting the 580 for 25€ next week (The person who sells it said in the description, that its a keyboard for children because of the small keys. Little does she/he know... :D). Thought about getting the 480 for 40€, but it that would have been 2 hours of additional time on train. i am happy I waited for a better deal. Are there even any noticable differences between the 480 and the 580? Was not able to find out from a quick look into the manuals. Nice tutorial by the way ;)
darxkai Thanks. The only difference is a cosmetic change of colour and the presets are in a different order. That's it. 25€ is a good deal! Yeah they're often mistaken for toys so good find!
The volume of my unit seems to be stuck on way-to-low. Any chance you might know a way to fix this? I feel like it was louder when I 1st got it, perhaps hit a setting I am not aware of. thank you for your tutorials new subscriber here.
Hi. There shouldn’t be any settings that would lower the sound long term as it will reset itself after a while if it’s not plugged in and switched off. Is it just lower through the speakers or over the headphone socket too?
ChrisLody Thank you for the response, I figured it out, by holding "Melody vol" button and then pushing value + it raised the volume back up. But I was wondering if there was a reset button, so you told me that, and I appreciate it:)
Ah I see it was just the melody volume, glad it’s nothing serious. I’d quite like if it had a reset but unfortunately doesn’t as it’s a seemingly random length of time it takes to reset.
Wow! And I tought that it's not possible to make loops and arpeggios without any external gear. So I made really long sequence by using 3 melody slots for one of my band's song. It was really painful to record it haha 😁
Just uploaded a video where I'm using loops for the first time. There is no patch editing in real time like in your video, but I tried it later today. Maybe I'll make another video using this technique.
What a great tutorial! I have a PSS 580 and I never knew it was capable of doing this sort or arrangement. Are the melody and chord settings you save in the buttons retained when the power is off so that you can use them again i.e do they use non-volatile storage? Are there any other settings that are retained in the same way? I'd be grateful for your advice.
Thanks. Unfortunately the memory is really unpredictable. It will sometimes retain the memory for quite a while after power off but sometimes looses everything immediately. The best thing to do is to back the memory up to a computer using a midi sysex dump and then you can load it back in at any time
If it's the same model as these you can get back to the basic presets by pressing 'Voice' and typing in the number of the preset you want such as 00 for synth brass
So cool. Hi. I just found the PSS-480 in a kind of shed, missing a battery cover and power adapter (asia 220v). I'm not sure it's working coz' it may have been rained on. Is this model a toy by the way? Or is it used by professionals, like Roland. God bless, Proverbs 31
SevenDeMagnus Almost any 12v power supply with a positive centre connection will work as long as the plug fits so see what you can find in your country with those specs. The battery compartment will be almost impossible to find though to be honest. Yo’d have better luck finding one on another keyboard, though it wouldn’t be impossible to make one if you know anyone who’s good at crafting things. I’m not sure about mods and circuit bending it. I’ve done a bit of that myself but I’m happy with this one the way it is so I don’t want to risk breaking it. I wouldn’t say it’s considered to be a pro keyboard no, but it’s much better than a toy. Thanks. They're the rubber button with carbon back type which are usually a bit of a pig to fix, especially if the rubber bit is missing. There's plenty of them around in my experience so it'd be worth finding a fully working one.
Hello, I have a question. I'm considering buying a PSS-680 today, but I have a problem I can't find an answer to, can I use this MIDI-enabled keyboard in programs like "FL Studio", "Mixcraft" - to play instruments in the program?
You can yes. But you will need a way to connect the large round DIN midi sockets into your computer, which will either be via a midi to usb cable or an audio interface that has midi sockets on it
thank you very much ☺️ I think this cable will work www.trendyol.com/alfais/4590-usb-midi-org-kablosu-cevirici-donusturucu-adaptor-p-41122985?boutiqueId=61&merchantId=111727&storefrontId=1&countryCode=TR&language=tr&gads=true&tytyty:electronics_y:consumer-electronics_z:bilgisayar-tablet_t:pla_performance_max_test&gclid=CjwKCAjwqJSaBhBUEiwAg5W9p_yJZky90qasLJuSwqboiGmW3IzSRCAJ9TU1t67ZEFYbJy-gy2I9zhoC3TQQAvD_BwE
Yes sadly the memory on these machines is extremely unpredictable. Sometimes they will remember and sometimes not. Always best to make something and record it straight away, preferably with the keyboard plugged into the mains supply
@@ChrisLodyMusic Hey.. thanks so much the reply.. I'm kinda imaging the possibility of this toward more ambient production.. plus though the possibility to generate a loop, to then tweak all the sound change parameters, hands free.. no need to keep jabbing notes the keyboard.
GilMoreno The instructions would be basically the same with buttons in different positions but I suppose it'd be worth doing for clarity. I'll add it to the list of things to record.
Clarence G I’m not sure to be honest. I don’t have one to try it on but I know it doesn’t have a very deep sequencer so that’s a bit of an obstacle. If real-time tweaks work though at least that would be fun
I’ve not tried this but I think you could probably just switch off the Rhythm button (on the left on the 480 and 580) and this will mute the drums. I think this is correct, mine is in the attic at the moment while we try to sell our house
Oh that’s odd. Maybe there is a midi method. There’s quite a deep midi implementation section in the back of the manual that you can download from Yamaha direct. I’ll have a look in a bit too
It depends what the inputs on your mixer are but a guitar lead will do it if it fits, by which I mean a 1\4" to 1\4" mono cable. The output is mono apart from the drums so if you're just looking to connect it for synth that will do.

How do you change the instrument??
If you just want to select one of the presets, press 'Voice' below the display then type in the number from the voice list. Hope that helps.
have a pss 780 but cannot get melody to loop for some reason when i play back chord there,s no melody
That's odd, it should work as shown as I tried it on my 680. Though the buttons will be in different places
loop stops when melody ends then starts again
After doing this, when I turned off the PSS-580, all the settings were initialized.
Yes sadly the memory on these machines is extremely unpredictable. Sometimes they will remember and sometimes not. Always best to make something and record it straight away, preferably with the keyboard plugged into the mains supply
I subscribed unsubscribed then subscribed again. Because I can.

JaBig * Really poor 😂
ChrisLody xD
Is it not possible to mute the drums in any way..?
You can yes. If you press the Rhythm button in the Auto Accompliment section so the LED turns off the drums won't play

Hey.. thanks so much the reply..
I'm kinda imaging the possibility of this toward more ambient production.. plus though the possibility to generate a loop, to then tweak all the sound change parameters, hands free.. no need to keep jabbing notes the keyboard.
C'mon Yamaha, re-release keyboards like this!
I cant do it with the PSS-680, you know why?
It should work with a 680 too. I have one and it works on mine anyway. The button positions are a bit different though
@@ChrisLodyMusic Are the same steps as with the 480?
Yes that's right, it works just the same way
@@ChrisLodyMusic Ok, i will keep trying then 😂, u have ig account?
I do yes. I'm ChrisLodyMusic on Instagram
Please make this in a pss 680
GilMoreno The instructions would be basically the same with buttons in different positions but I suppose it'd be worth doing for clarity. I'll add it to the list of things to record.
will it work with my PSS 790?
I’m not sure to be honest as I don’t own one. It would be nice to know if it does
the PSS-790 isn't an FM synth keyboard, it's PCM sample-based.
What year was this keyboard built?
Leon Vanderschaaf 1989 I believe. The 480 came out in 1988 which has the same architecture but different colours
Can i do that with the 470?? Thanks!
Clarence G I’m not sure to be honest. I don’t have one to try it on but I know it doesn’t have a very deep sequencer so that’s a bit of an obstacle. If real-time tweaks work though at least that would be fun
sold mine :|
Southend Busker Damn shame 🙁
Do you know how to send MIDI without the drums? I figured out how to play the chords memory via MIDI but the rhythm plays too.
I’ve not tried this but I think you could probably just switch off the Rhythm button (on the left on the 480 and 580) and this will mute the drums. I think this is correct, mine is in the attic at the moment while we try to sell our house
No prob. Thanks for the info. You can actually manually press the Rhythm button to shut off the drums but you have to press it every bar.
Oh that’s odd. Maybe there is a midi method. There’s quite a deep midi implementation section in the back of the manual that you can download from Yamaha direct. I’ll have a look in a bit too
Pissing acid, have you seen a doctor?
😂 Must get round to that, costs a fortune in underwear tbh
Blaaaa blaaaaa blaaa you must play i will se what style and other🤦

hello mate could you please tell me what cable i need to get aux/phones into a mixer please
It depends what the inputs on your mixer are but a guitar lead will do it if it fits, by which I mean a 1\4" to 1\4" mono cable. The output is mono apart from the drums so if you're just looking to connect it for synth that will do.
