@@MrZandark55 Oko is a not a good card. It has one broken ability that didn't get play tested properly and that's it, that's just broken hence its ban. Rest is meh.
@@Midgar88 Well, a 3CMC planeswalker with a +2 is really strong, considering the synergy with the food token created. I agree with you that it's not that overpowered except for the +1, but it's still really strong and not that bad.
@@Midgar88 Well it getting banned in pretty much every format under the sun within months of printing is probably an indication of a fairly brOko card, but what do I know.
Blacklance Paragon is a solid card. Against control, being able to flash it in at the end of the Opp's turn and then cast another spell on your turn really taxes control. Since it is a knight, it'll likely be played in SB.
Love Day9 to pieces but I definitely believe he's wrong about the Paragon. I think it's maindeckable as a tricky card that can serve a number of roles and slots perfectly fine in the two drop slot of the aggressive Black-based knights deck. Getting under control aside (the 3/1 body is especially relevant there for buffing Knight of the Ebon Legion), I think the card is a fantastic bluffing tool. Just having it in the deck makes literally every knight attack you make with two mana up majorly sketchy in a similar way to how Knight of the Ebon Legion's ability makes it so difficult to block--- and the opponent always sees *that* card coming. He mentions why it would make more sense to just run cards like Murder, but with Murderous Rider we sort of have the opportunity to have our cake and eat it, too. I look forward to using him and punishing everyone who underestimates the card's potential.
@@dongatito266 But I don't think creature-less control will be a thing going into the new standard with so many strong and diverse threats lying around. I was barely surviving against Krasis and Nissa before, now with questing beast(among other stuff) I fully expect every control deck will die out right. If you are always trading creatures one for one, the card is not that good. Don't get me wrong, 2 2cmc 3/1 is still good in certain meta and situations.
I think that's a pretty bold prediction; I guess we'll see if it pans out. I personally believe control in some form will continue to exist even with Questing Beast and Friends rampaging the meta. With that said, I'm not even convinced that the Paragon is at its best in creatureless control since its utility is best used in combat-- my point is that 3 points of damage is perfect to pair with a turn 1 Knight. Even if the opponent casts a blocker, one can flash this in on their turn, untap, and then cast a card like Disfigure to clear the way with relative ease. I don't think it's a fantastic card to have against a deck like Rakdos, or against weenie style decks where the one point of toughness could really hurt it (unless you're able to punish double blocks), but it has just enough utility to be more valuable than its body would suggest.
@@dongatito266 Control will be a thing as long as powerful expensive cards still exists, but creature-less control? Not so much. I just don't see enough tools in this set. Back to the Knight, we'll have to see do we still have enough 2cmc slots for it as worthy knight is almost an auto-include.

A wish effect for 4 (3 generic) that can be a 4 toughness flying body for 2 which recurs (at instant speed), and in blue, when blue has so much for card advantage in control and there's a terrifying grixis reanimator set available! Great funny stuff though, honestly, keep up the good work.
Re: Blacklance Paragon. Would you feel the same way if it were instead a 1B instant that said "give target Knight you control Deathtouch and Lifelink until end of turn. Then put a 3/1 human knight into play"?
I love that Charming Prince is a white Bear with charm effects. 2/2 for 2 with modal effects. Fairy Guidemother is actually extremely valuable for UW Flyers because it replaces Loyal Pegasus, which removes a creature that's a weenie version of winmore. Mysterious Pathligher is also at least a 3 because gatherer says a creature entering with 0 gets 1, so it's always upside in an adventure deck. Which GW is pushed towards.
Emry, Lurker of the Loch synergizes really well with Wishing Well. You can sacrifice the well to draw 2 for 4, then play it from the graveyard for 1 to scry 2, and sacrifice it again when you have open mana. Late game, this just provides a ton of card advantage (it's like a Chemister's Insight that costs 1 more and can be replayed without having to discard a card for as long as Emry survives)
I personally like green the most with black/white following behind. Maybe it’s my type of playstyle, but I like how consistent food seems for the color. Good searching, decent ramp, big bodies, and an interesting mechanic with food.
uh, fae of wishes is probably named so after a series of "wish" cards that let you pull stuff from the sb. also, im fairly certain the steep cost of it's return to hand is because you can adventure with it again. though self bounce is so prevalent at the moment that i think that it's unnecessary. but could definitely be very strong with a strong sb toolbox. this set seems a very deliberate attempt to slow the game down, and lower the power curve, with excellent flavor to placate the playerbase.
Sean: Says a one mana mill 4 with a 0/4 body is bad Me, a milling intellectual: Pardon sir? But legitimately the Secret keeper is a really solid card for a monoblue mill deck. Adventure turn one, play the mill fueled Gargoyle turn 2, either another Secret Keeper Adventure or a Wall of Lost Thoughts turn 3 and you have a 5/4 Flying attacker. Then you can play a 4 mana draw 4 on turn 4 if you’ve been hitting your land drops. I honestly think aggro mill will be viable in Eldraine Standard
I feel you're forgetting with Blacklance Paragon that you flash it in for knights have first strike. Knights are going to want to go as wide as possible and be aggressive plus there's three good one mana knight drops including fervent champion who already has first strike + venerable knight who buffs on death but you probably just want to keep ebonblade and fervent alive. 2 mana knights it's competing with aren't particularly good. When you remember Embercleave ... I believe there will be a rakdos knights deck that finds it essential.
Also, Paragon has been so sweet for me in the knight decks. It only costs 2 and can be flashed, its pretty much hard removal. Use this on a first striker or menace and you got yourself a great trade.
Oko combos with dreadhorde invasion, allowing you to make free for fours every turn, combining that with the new birds of paradise, you can make four fours every turn starting on turn three, along with the rest of your deck playing as usual, seems pretty good
Having really gotten into MTG during combo winter, seeing those blue cards made me start thinking combo decks. Because a wish card and a Time Spiral effect card means I get to play more Magic than my opponent. I will find an answer, you just have to be patient. There is enough bounce effects that I can take my time. As Day9 was saying, 'oh, piece of blue plastic'. I also want to build some kind of Taxes deck.
Hey Day[9], if it helps, I’ve always referred to “plus one plus counters” as PoPo counters or just PoPo. I hate saying the whole thing too so I feel your pain 😅
I have to say, it is absolutely hilarious watching this years later and remembering the absolute format warping commited by Brazen Borrower, Bonecrusher Giant, and Embercleave, to name a few.
Im actually excited for Blacklance Paragon for my Sultai Flash standard deck that got me to Mythic. Its a flash creature with death touch that are super defensive.
Every time people discuss Torbran, they only focus on direct damage like from instants and sorceries, but it just says "red source," so wouldn't that mean even creatures do +2 damage?
It is a pretty average card, its just got a broken ability that wasn't priced correctly or tested in the meta. That's outright broken, hence the ban, its not a good card.
Mysterious Pathlighter 2W Creature - Faerie 2/2 Flying Each creature you control that has an Adventure enters the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it. (It doesn't need to have gone on the adventure first.) A creature with an Adventure you control that would enter the battlefield with no +1/+1 counters on it enters with one +1/+1 counter on it.
Hmm. Deathless Knight just seems _very_ powerful to me. You can attack and attack and attack as long as you have some form of lifegain. Nothing wrong with the statline, too. The only issue is the cost but it being possile to run in green means you can probably get it out before turn four.
Gotta say i think there are some cards you are seriously undervaluing...or at least not giving full context, for example blacklance paragon, i dont think it is going to be a meta staple but flash as people tend to say...its like psuedo haste. plus you have to consider the full meta of knights, like the 1 mana 1/1 haste first strike that can equip things for cheaper, this makes a disgusting combat trick while putting an extra body on the board. we have several flash speed equipment too meaning you could flash them in on him if you dont need the paragon. Same thing about the Archon that makes everything 3/3, things to consider. if you have any anthem effects or +1/+1 counters, your stuff will always be bigger (nissa land elementals would be 6/6s), 3/3 is right in range for Oko to steal things, 3/3 puts everything your opponents have (without counters) in range of Witch's Veangence/Cry of the Carnarium. It makes the 1/1 princess unblockable and buffs her to a 3/3. it turns off Cavalcade of Calamity (granted you are probably still buffing them overall but if you have them on the ropes with very few creatures left and only a couple health it could save you from the direct damage......but by far the worst example i have laid out) Same thing with the incidental mill cards, that 2 mana UB card to destroy or counter based on cards in enemy graveyard.....OOOOF that card is good, especially if you say......use a 1 mana 1/2 to mill them 2 cards turn 1 setting you up to (on the play of course) counter their turn 2 play no matter what it is........ Just saying there was a lot of evaluating cards in a vacuum and not a lot of evaluating cards in context.
I wasn’t too excited for Once Upon A Time, and then I realized it can grab Adventure creatures. I love playing Golgari, and this can grab Murderous Rider, and that makes me happy.
Thanks so much for this Day 9! 4 glorious hours haha. Im new to MTG Arena and came in at M20 which was the last set i think. Ive been collecting those cards which has been fun. Game seems to give you one of each planeswalker or its random RNG lol. Anyways with the new expansion should i keep using gold M20 or would you recommend going for Eldraine cards now? Thanks in advance!
fires of invention is sick in any deck that has minion taps/artifacts/equips say you have 5 lands, you can cast 2 5 mana spells and still have 5 mana left over for all your taps and equips, you can triple the mana per turn you have available with it
I haven't been interested in Magic for a very long time, but I am interested in this set just because of the theme. I'd probably just get some pre-con decks though.
giant oppertunity offers a "giant oppertunity" (huehue) to get the feasting troll king (7/6 trample vigilence) out on turn 3 play any sort of "from your deck to your graveyard" type deck, shuffle troll king into the graveyard, on turn 3 GO for 3 foods, sac the 3 foods and BOOM 7/6 trample+vigilence on the board turn 3 or gilded goose turn 1, tap it turn 2 for a 2nd food, boom turn 3 7/7 and you only used 2 cards
dance of the manse is insane in any enchantment/artifact deck even if you DONT spend the x=6 on it if you do x=3 for example its 5 mana to draw and play 3 enchantments/artifacts from the graveyard that cost 3 or less, thats 5 mana for not only drawn and play 3 cards (which on its own seems great) but those 3 cards can have up to 9 mana worth of value, 5 mana for 9mana of specific chosen value in a single card thats insane, and it only ramps up to absurdity as X gets bigger
Beloved Princess can maybe be decent if you buff it up in a white/green style deck but even so that’s requiring you to invest additional resources to make it remotely good
Hmm.. for non-constructed, I wonder if there's any merit to playing Animating Faerie with a Darksteel Citadel - turn that land into a 4/4 Indestructible
You've always had the best worst card reviews when you went over Hearthstone sets. But I don't know MTG, so that means you're totally right about everything here!
corridor monitor is going to be played in Kiki jiki and splinter twin decks. Also Vantress Gargoyle is amazing. in the early game you're have at least 4 cards in hand so it can still block and then in the mid and late game it's a 5/4 flyer that can't block but who cares it'll be a 5/4 flying attacker so your opponent will have to spend removal on it.
I don't think Sean is understanding "enters with an additional +1/+1" correctly (3:43:12). It seems that he is thinking that the creature needs to come in with a +1/+1 counter to get a benefit from this effect. In truth, it just adds a +1/+1 counter to any creature, regardless of if it already has a +1/+1 counter or not. See "Arlinn, Voice of the Pack" for reference.
@@HighLanderPonyYT I would disagree that it strongly implies that. One could interpret it that way, but the wording used keeps it from being confused for a replacement effect and (in my opinion) makes it clear that it is a "stack-able effect" that can be applied multiple times.
@@HighLanderPonyYT No worries. Just trying to spread of the joy of MTG rules and wordings. From my experience, there is almost always a reason a card is worded in certain ways, though the weirder the wording, the more fringe the reasoning behind that wording tends to be.
Black paragon is awesome; especially in mono black aggro with knight of the ebon legion as a removal spell and mono back has bad 2 drops so this helps bridge the gap. If you want proof you can go and watch reid dukes vod on twitch from 9/24/2019. I love you Sean but you were wrong about this one :)
Turn 4 I play Doom Foretold, opponents upkeep they sac a dude Turn 5 I have no other nonland permanents out, in response to it's trigger, I bounce doom foretold back to my hand so I discard and draw a card, lose 2 gain 2 and I get a knight Problems? :^) Jank for lyfe
Fringe scenario: Player 1 plays doom foretold. Player 2 upkeep, sacs a permanent. Player 1 upkeep, when the trigger is put in the stack, Player 2 destroys Doom foretold (mortify, assassin's trophy, etc.), Player 1 gets hit with negative effects of their own card.
Faeburrow Elder + Gauntlets of Light + Biomancer's Familiar = infinite blue and green mana, that can create the largest Hydroid Krasis ever played, which lets you draw your entire library so you can use the infinite mana to summon Jace and win the game using his +1 ability. All in, it is a turn 4 or 5 win (depends on if you get mana ramp on turn 2) if you manage to get all the cards, and you get serious Jank cred for pulling off that nonsense.
Is he missing with the rant about Paragon not being a removal spell how easy graveyard recursion is for Black. That card looks sweet to me for 3 of them in a deck meaning I have 6 of them, or 9 of them. Way superior to 3 murders.
Matt Butler basically how card games work since deck slots are a thing. It’s either playable or it’s not. It either deserves a slot or it doesn’t. it makes no sense to say a card is not playable, but somehow a 3.
Revenge of Ravens is ABSOLUTELY busted and will be common in Grixis and Esper. If you manage to get two or three out, your opponents will simply be locked out of the game in some cases, while, in others it will simply let you focus your removal on larger threats. Additionally, it completely shuts down Field of the Dead if you manage to stack two of them.

Or just "one, one counter" and "minus one, minus one counter"
Ah yes, I forgot about MoMo lol 👍🏽👍🏽
With specters Shriek, you can exile your own adventure from your hand and you'd still be able to play it as a creature!
15:13 does this need to be in a knight deck?
Every time people discuss Torbran, they only focus on direct damage like from instants and sorceries, but it just says "red source," so wouldn't that mean even creatures do +2 damage?
"This (Oko) is terrible, it gets a 1!" Hindsight can be fascinating ^_^;
It is a pretty average card, its just got a broken ability that wasn't priced correctly or tested in the meta. That's outright broken, hence the ban, its not a good card.
Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but the Oko evaluation is probably the most off the mark in the history of Magic. :P
Mysterious Pathlighter

Creature - Faerie
2/2
Flying
Each creature you control that has an Adventure enters the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it. (It doesn't need to have gone on the adventure first.)
A creature with an Adventure you control that would enter the battlefield with no +1/+1 counters on it enters with one +1/+1 counter on it.
3:50:47 Oko 1 rated :D
Hmm. Deathless Knight just seems _very_ powerful to me. You can attack and attack and attack as long as you have some form of lifegain. Nothing wrong with the statline, too. The only issue is the cost but it being possile to run in green means you can probably get it out before turn four.
1. all that gliters combo with karn and artifact creatures summoning? ( combineswith cow also or casted on beloved princess )
It makes the 1/1 princess unblockable and buffs her to a 3/3. it turns off Cavalcade of Calamity (granted you are probably still buffing them overall but if you have them on the ropes with very few creatures left and only a couple health it could save you from the direct damage......but by far the worst example i have laid out)
Same thing with the incidental mill cards, that 2 mana UB card to destroy or counter based on cards in enemy graveyard.....OOOOF that card is good, especially if you say......use a 1 mana 1/2 to mill them 2 cards turn 1 setting you up to (on the play of course) counter their turn 2 play no matter what it is........
Just saying there was a lot of evaluating cards in a vacuum and not a lot of evaluating cards in context.
Wait, did Gingerbrute’s rating go down when he found out it was food in addition to being a creature?
"If you're looking for clips to throw at me in the future, this is the video for you"
i wonder how much times he received the "Oko Sucks" clip
Oko Sucks, embercleave é too tough to cast, you never will use the 2 damage from Bonecrusher. Man, he was very lost in the review. poor day9
I love the initial reaction to piper of the swarm
I wasn’t too excited for Once Upon A Time, and then I realized it can grab Adventure creatures. I love playing Golgari, and this can grab Murderous Rider, and that makes me happy.
I had someone use merfolk secretkeeper in a mill deck against me recently, kinda sucked but it pushed me to make a better deck than what I was using.
Day9, your attitude is an inspiration!
Yay its Day[9] plus MTG
Thanks so much for this Day 9! 4 glorious hours haha. Im new to MTG Arena and came in at M20 which was the last set i think. Ive been collecting those cards which has been fun. Game seems to give you one of each planeswalker or its random RNG lol. Anyways with the new expansion should i keep using gold M20 or would you recommend going for Eldraine cards now? Thanks in advance!
fires of invention is sick in any deck that has minion taps/artifacts/equips
say you have 5 lands, you can cast 2 5 mana spells and still have 5 mana left over for all your taps and equips, you can triple the mana per turn you have available with it
I'm super excited to run it with Vivien's Arkbow
pls someone for what the deck make day 9 a knight deck with 4 blacklance in it
I haven't been interested in Magic for a very long time, but I am interested in this set just because of the theme. I'd probably just get some pre-con decks though.
All That Glitters + Smothering Tithe won me a few games in the brawl event a couple weeks ago.
giant oppertunity offers a "giant oppertunity" (huehue) to get the feasting troll king (7/6 trample vigilence) out on turn 3
play any sort of "from your deck to your graveyard" type deck, shuffle troll king into the graveyard, on turn 3 GO for 3 foods, sac the 3 foods and BOOM 7/6 trample+vigilence on the board turn 3
or gilded goose turn 1, tap it turn 2 for a 2nd food, boom turn 3 7/7 and you only used 2 cards
dance of the manse is insane in any enchantment/artifact deck even if you DONT spend the x=6 on it
if you do x=3 for example its 5 mana to draw and play 3 enchantments/artifacts from the graveyard that cost 3 or less, thats 5 mana for not only drawn and play 3 cards (which on its own seems great) but those 3 cards can have up to 9 mana worth of value, 5 mana for 9mana of specific chosen value in a single card
thats insane, and it only ramps up to absurdity as X gets bigger
1:18 it's a 3 power beater on turn two or a kill spell in the late game
OPTIONS, DAYNINE, OPTIONS
can you please make a Feast vs Famine what the deck where one of you has to run a buffet deck full of food.
Beloved Princess can maybe be decent if you buff it up in a white/green style deck but even so that’s requiring you to invest additional resources to make it remotely good
Are you going to be doing card reviews for all mtg sets from now on? Cause that would be incredible
Hmm.. for non-constructed, I wonder if there's any merit to playing Animating Faerie with a Darksteel Citadel - turn that land into a 4/4 Indestructible
The flavor for Cauldron Familiar is that when you shake the box of treats the cat comes out from hiding under the couch.
You've always had the best worst card reviews when you went over Hearthstone sets.
But I don't know MTG, so that means you're totally right about everything here!
No it's the same way. He basically did what everyone did secret homie.
42:32
did day9 just say "removal smell'?
corridor monitor is going to be played in Kiki jiki and splinter twin decks.
Also Vantress Gargoyle is amazing. in the early game you're have at least 4 cards in hand so it can still block and then in the mid and late game it's a 5/4 flyer that can't block but who cares it'll be a 5/4 flying attacker so your opponent will have to spend removal on it.
I've been watching Sean at x2 for so long that he sounds weird at normal speed now.
Popo counter. Literally works like popo on dbz..

POPO COUNTER
Black paragon is awesome; especially in mono black aggro with knight of the ebon legion as a removal spell and mono back has bad 2 drops so this helps bridge the gap. If you want proof you can go and watch reid dukes vod on twitch from 9/24/2019. I love you Sean but you were wrong about this one :)
Ok I got 10 hours to be at work let's knock out 5 of them with this
Turn 4 I play Doom Foretold, opponents upkeep they sac a dude
Turn 5 I have no other nonland permanents out, in response to it's trigger, I bounce doom foretold back to my hand so I discard and draw a card, lose 2 gain 2 and I get a knight
Problems? :^)
Jank for lyfe
Fringe scenario: Player 1 plays doom foretold. Player 2 upkeep, sacs a permanent. Player 1 upkeep, when the trigger is put in the stack, Player 2 destroys Doom foretold (mortify, assassin's trophy, etc.), Player 1 gets hit with negative effects of their own card.
Lmao
Fires of invention=2
Embercleave=3
Torbran=3
Love struck beast=2
Once upon a time=2
Oko=1
Magic mirror and Jace gonna be a happy combo.
Is he missing with the rant about Paragon not being a removal spell how easy graveyard recursion is for Black. That card looks sweet to me for 3 of them in a deck meaning I have 6 of them, or 9 of them. Way superior to 3 murders.
Love how Sean's rating system is 1,2 or 5.
Matt Butler basically how card games work since deck slots are a thing. It’s either playable or it’s not. It either deserves a slot or it doesn’t. it makes no sense to say a card is not playable, but somehow a 3.
@@MrTaylork1 That's kind of reductive. You can have a specific but good removal card and run 1 or 2. Doesn't mean you want 4 of it
Revenge of Ravens is ABSOLUTELY busted and will be common in Grixis and Esper. If you manage to get two or three out, your opponents will simply be locked out of the game in some cases, while, in others it will simply let you focus your removal on larger threats. Additionally, it completely shuts down Field of the Dead if you manage to stack two of them.
8:51 "constructed value in life" cause mtg is a construct without material value so we must assign our own. mainly through friendship and the playing of game :) (but sometimes bomb rares/mythics that hit $80 in the first week after a new set drops $$$$$$)
So the back ground art makes it look like you have a sword !
I hope we get a highlights reel of this
I'm gonna make a Happily Never After, with curses and delirium and life drain effects, the evil insane win condition.
i love the thematic fairy tale style rhyming

Day9's entire card review summarized
Man you gotta do reviews like this for everything in life.
Love your channel
Was nice to hear you talk starcraft again 😢
