      The BBC 5 Live commentator (I think Mike Ingham) uttered the immortal line at the trophy-lift: “And it’s Grecian 2004”

    Thank you so much for posting, I was 13 at the time, I absolutely loved this tournament and still do, no one talks about it.
    Not to mention what Des contributed to English football. I remember him so well, he genuinely made every show he was on better.

    Euro 2004 really does look retro now but World Cup 2006 doesn’t even look that dated

    Still to this day think that last 3 mins against France cost England the tournament!

      Yep, Gerrard's fault. What on earth he was thinking I still don't know.
      And he went on to make the exact same howler another 4 times in his career and some still pretend he was world class lol

      Would we have beaten Greece in the Quarters though? France, Czech Republic and Portugal twice, all lost. They we're very tough to break down Would we have beaten them? Maybe, but maybe we would have drew 0-0 and lost on pens again, which would be seen as embarrassing from our point of view.

    • @cddb5408
      @cddb5408 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JW-zr4ju We wouldn't have drawn 0-0 in that tournament we had the best goals-to-game ratio out of every team in Euro2004 and finished 5th which is the best position a QF "loser" can finish.
      Greece deserved it because they beat the teams you mentioned plus got a good draw vs Spain. Any team winning that 1996 to 2012 format deserved it because it was set up in a way where the winner has to earn it unlike 2016 which was an absolute piss-take of a tournament where Portugal avoided Italy, Spain, Belguim & Germany and played the likes of Iceland, Austria, Hungary, Wales (without Ramsey 1of very few big Wales players) and other nations who weren't as good as the 4 teams previously mentioned and still only managed 1 90min win all tournament against the same nation that England who had a poor Euro2016 beat although Wales's line-up was stronger vs England.
      But Greece were beatable in Euro2004 as Russia beat them and yeah the luck Greece had (as all champions need a bit of luck) was they avoided THE best team in the tournament due to that Gerrard moment of absolute madness.
      But if England weren't winning it, next in line was Greece or CzechRep.
      Portugal I thought had a very unconvincing tournament for an above average host nation. Spent so long in that tournament behind in games (probably more time behind than not) and basically lost half their games whether you see it as they lost to England with SolCampbell's late winner in their 4th game or even including the 2 games they shouldn't have played afterwards as they also lost 50% of those so they lost 3 out of 6 including that England game which I'm sorry but England won it should've been 2 out of 4 losses for Portugal and was but for UrsMeier there was no reason other than sympathy for hosts that SolCampbell has another winning goal for England in a major tournament disallowed through no fault of his own or really any of his teammates Goalkeeper typically for Portugal went down in hope of getting a Free-kick for nothing because he knew he was beaten.
      Portugal weren't the best in anything that tournament. Nowhere near best goals-to-game ratio or most goals scored, didn't have best defence, didn't have most clean sheets, didn't have the biggest margin of win (in fact their biggest win was 2-0 vs Russia who finished bottom of group with 2nd goal in 89th minute) didn't have most wins, didn't have least losses, didn't have a player who came close to getting golden boot etc... they weren't the best in anything and they were the hosts.
      Greece did well to beat them TWICE proving it was no fluke and especially with an inferior team and after having the harder semi-final opponent (Netherlands won 1 out of 5 games, CzechRep won all 4 games before Greece SF) and with 1 day less rest than Portugal for the final Portugal are living in cloud cuckoo land if they think they deserved that trophy more than Greece, England, CzechRep (even Sweden scored same amount of goals in 4 games as Portugal scored in 6 and Sweden didn't actually lose any just lost on pens). France were dodgy in that tournament and used up all their luck in the group stage although they would've beaten Portugal unless the ref intervened like he did when England faced Portugal.

      @@cddb5408 We should have won that quarter final against Portugal, I have a strong feeling that if Wazza didn't break his metatarsal we would have gone through and won the thing even if the Sol Campbell goal was disallowed which it was, also you mentioned Stevie G's howler and that he did it another 4 times, I can remember 2 off the top of my head - Henry in 2006 and Drogba in 2010

      I was baffled listening to that, the Premiership at the time was predominantly won by two teams (Man Utd and Arsenal) cause Liverpool at the time had gone 14 years without a title and Chelsea were still in their long title drought until they finally ended it the following season. So maybe he should have said Big Two rather than Big Three
