    Hi, I just recently got an offer from Durham, the college hasn’t been decided yet👍 At first I was super excited and then watched loads of videos from people from Durham and got really nervous.... So, with matriculation does everybody need a gown?? Is it expensive? I don’t come from the South and come from a state school so I’m worried that things are going to be expensive and I’m going to need a lot of things... which I really don’t want to get my parents to pay for. On this point, is it true that Durham has a lot people against Northeners?? What do we wear underneath the gown? All the guys have suits so I was wondering a dress?? Also, Durham seems to be quite spaced out so is it easy to get lost?? I’m quite bad with directions so I’m worried that I won’t find my way😣. With furniture and things do they have like a desk provided or do we need to bring/but our own? I’ve seen that all the colleges have bars are you allowed to just wear like normal clothes like jeans?? Sorry, I’m just so so worried about all the teeny things😭😭 I probably have more questions so will comment when I remember them 👍😂 Thanks so much for you content and I love your clothes and you’re so pretty x

      Hi there! Firstly, congratulations for getting an offer from Durham! It is a lovely university and university city. For matriculation, not all the colleges wear a gown, it's just the more traditional ones. I went to St. Mary's and we wore gowns. The gowns can be expensive especially if you buy them brand new, but your college (if they are a gown wearing college for formal events) should have an option to purchase a second hand one and these are about £30 cheaper. For matriculation boys wear a suit and girls tend to wear a nice dress under the gown. You can wear flat shoes as it is very hilly in Durham! Things are a bit spaced out but the city overall is a small one, so you will find your way around in no time. Depending on your college, you may even have your degree faculty virtually next door. (The science site is located close to all of the hill colleges.). People overall are really friendly so don't worry if you've heard anything different! You'll be living in college for your first year so your room will already be furnished so you don't need to bring furniture, as you'll have a desk and a chair, draws etc. You can bring some home furnishings though like fairy lights, a nice lamp, cushions etc! Yes of course, normal clothes like jeans are totally fine when you go to the college bars! Ah thank you so much lovely, that's so kind of you to say! :) x

    Thank you very much for this video! I'm an EU student starting at Collingwood this September :) Would you recommend bringing my own mattress topper, pillows, etc. or is it better to buy them somewhere in Durham? Again thank you very much for the video

    • @BilgiDemirsoz
      @BilgiDemirsoz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're very welcome! I'm glad that you've found it helpful :) Firstly congratulations in getting into Durham! Collingwood is a great college, you'll love it! So college provides basic bedding and if you're travelling over from the EU, it'll be quite a lot of baggage for you to bring lots of soft furnishings, so it's better to get those once you get here. Pillows are provided but it's nice to get your own I think. For things like that, there's a big Tesco which is located in part of Durham called Gilesgate. It's only about 10 minutes on the bus from the city centre and they'll have everything you need. There's also a shop called The Range just over the road from it as well. If you've got plenty of room left in your luggage and you want to bring a pillow or some nice / good quality bedding though then that's absolutely fine. That way you can use it as soon as you get here and you won't have to make a trip to get any, but if there's not enough room, then don't worry about it as you can get some once you're in Durham. At some colleges, I know during the International Freshers' week which is 1 week before all the UK based students arrive, they do a trip to IKEA in Newcastle so everybody can buy room stuff and décor to make it feel more cosy. Hope that this helps :)

    OMG I'm starting Durham this September and I've been allocated St Mary's college!!!
    I'M SUPERRRR NERVOUS and really confused on what to bring and how to decorate my room because I didn't get to attend the offer holder residential day as it got cancelled due to covid and I missed the open day at Durham. So I would be super grateful if you did a video talking about the essentials or more 'catered to durham' university kit list, it would really help a lot x
    Also, I heard Durham has a lot of Formal Dinners/Balls, do you recommend we buy formal dresses (like prom dress) beforehand? if so where would you recommend we get them from and how many should we aim to take??
    Thank you for all the help!

      Hey! Congratulations on getting a place and at Mary's too! You're going to love it :) Please don't be nervous, everyone is in the same boat and will be really keen to get to know each other and make friends, so just be yourself, try to be confident and chatty and it'll all be great :) Decorating your room will be so much fun! (This was something I really enjoyed doing.) I'll film a video about all of the essentials you'll need to bring very soon, including lots of Durham specific things that are good to have with you as well.
      Yes so Durham does have lots of formal dinners and balls each term. At Mary's you'll need a gown for your formals which you can buy directly from the college. I'd definitely bring at least 1 nice dress for the formals and balls. You can't go wrong with a little black dress as it'll suit any occasion and you can obviously style it differently with a variety of shoes and accessories as well. You could also bring a nice occasion wear dress like a prom dress if you already have one but you don't need a really obvious one with tonnes of netting etc. Just something pretty, elegant and of course something which you feel happy and comfortable in and can also dance easily in as balls always have a disco area :) Hope that this helps and the uni essentials guide will be coming soon!

    Hey! Great video. Hopefully I’ll be going to Durham this year. I just wanted to ask about packing 😅. I’m not very sure about what to pack and the essentials for Durham. As well as how much to take. I’m afraid I’ll end up taking my whole room with me 😂

    • @BilgiDemirsoz
      @BilgiDemirsoz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey! Thank you :) So packing wise, you'll need all of the basics like clothes (a couple of dresses for formals & balls, & jumpers / hat / scarf / gloves / warm hooded coat as it gets cold in winter), flat shoes (the hills are real in Durham!) and for your halls room definitely bring some cosy room décor pieces as it'll really help to make the room have a nice vibe. I had fairy lights, bunting, an old fashioned map and I made a tree silhouette for the wall! During Freshers' Week there's a fair where you can buy posters and house plants etc too. There's a kettle in the kitchens so you won't need kitchen appliances and if you're catered, then lots of pots and pans won't be necessary but definitely bring a couple of mugs as tea is an essential haha! Hope this helps! :)

    • @BilgiDemirsoz
      @BilgiDemirsoz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! That's great, you'll love it at Van Mildert College :) So if you have a keyboard attached to it, then that'll be fine for doing your work. Macbooks are super expensive so you don't need to get one of those. If you do decide you'd like a bigger screen, I think a basic laptop works great! Also, there are computers in college as well as the Bill Bryson Library, so you could always use those too if you need to. Van Mildert is a catered college so no you don't need to bring cooking tools over, as meals are prepared by college for you. Just bring a couple of mugs so that you can make tea when you want it (kettles are in the shared kitchens too). :) Hope this helps!

    Hey, I’m hopefully starting in September but am from a good city and love a night out! What do you think of the nightlife in Durham?? And also do people go to Newcastle often too?

    • @BilgiDemirsoz
      @BilgiDemirsoz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey :) Firstly congratulations, that's great news! So I'd say that the nightlife In Durham is good but it's not as big as cities like Newcastle, but during freshers' week your college will likely organise one night out in Newcastle. Sometimes once everyone's established their friendship groups they choose to head to Newcastle for a night out - you'd have to get a train and return at around 6am or get the night bus back (eek!). Durham's clubs close by 2am at the latest too. However, because there are fewer clubs than in big cities (there're about 5 or 6) they do tend to be busy so a night out does still feel really lively, especially the sports night out which was every Wednesday after the matches / games etc. Durham also is renowned for its college bar crawls where people head to as many of the college bars as they can or they go to all the ones on the Bailey or all of the hill college's bars for example which is super fun! Each college bar also has its own specific famous college drink (at Mary's ours was called the Purple Haze as our college colour was purple! I believe it was some kind of red and blue alco-pop 'fusion'!) Hope this helps! I'm going to do a video specifically about the Durham nightlife too :)

    • @ajwills6039
      @ajwills6039 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bilgi Thank you so so so much for the detailed reply- it means a lot! It also makes me feel better about choosing Durham! Looking forward to your nightlife video!!! Also, I’m at Collingwood and was wondering if there will be people like me who want to go out/venture to Newcastle often- do you know much about the college? Lastly, o just wanted to ask if you think Durham still has the same student life of other unis as a lot of people say freshers/general nightlife won’t be the same at ‘Dulham’- thank you so much again 😊

    • @ajwills6039
      @ajwills6039 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bilgi also sorry one last thing on sports nights, do people who don’t play sports go out too?

    • @BilgiDemirsoz
      @BilgiDemirsoz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ajwills6039 You're very welcome! Ah I'm so glad it's helped you feel better about selecting Durham too, you'll love it here! Collingwood is a great college as it's really big so there'll be loads of people that you'll meet and there will definitely be others who want to go to Newcastle for nights out too. As a college, Collingwood is known for being quite sporty and it's also one of the more modern colleges so you'll get to experience all the best bits of being at Durham without it feeling really old fashioned. They've got lots of their own societies too, so if you join some of those, it'll definitely give you loads more going out opportunities as societies organise their own nights out and socials too. That way you won't have to rely upon one group of friends to go out. Definitely a good idea to have lots of different people to choose from I'd say! Student life at Durham I think could be considered a lot better than at some other universities. The collegiate system allows you to really get to know a lot of people, especially if you're at a big college like Collingwood, and being catered means you'll always be around other people at breakfast / lunch / dinner so it's more sociable than self-catered unis can be. The vibe at Durham is kind of magical, which you'll definitely feel once you settle in :) It's a beautiful city and it has a lot of potential to really be an amazing experience.
