The City of dreaming Books and other books of the author Walter Moers made me fall in love with fantasy (: I am german and to see it mentioned on an american channel is great. I actually recommended it to you probably about a year a go because I thought you would love it :)
Moers is so damn good. He brings the fantasy back to the fantasy genre. None of that formulaic bs, just pure unadultered imagination that can still hold a coherent, unpredictable, fun story. More authors should read him and take example. If we got an entire half a century of derivative literature from flogging Tolkien's corpse, then we should be able to get a little bit of Moersian fantasy as well. Y'know. As a treat.
thank you for putting the books in the description - sometimes i miss the name of the book and im like OOOO that sounds interesting what is that and then i have to try and rewind to find it - list is so much easier. It might also be helpful to include timestamps when you start talking about each book
Since you enjoyed City of the dreaming books, I would recommend that you'll check out "The thirteen and a half lives of Captain Bluebear" by Walter Moers
Seconding the recommending for Finnikin of the Rock, especially for people who want to read story themes centered around the the displacement of a whole people and the trauma surrounding that. This is definitely older YA with more mature themes. Each book also has romantic subplots which are petty well done.
Omg I just saw Haily in bookland do this and I was just thinking to myself, “hmm, Regan should do this” and here it is!!!! PS I’ve never been this early!!! Stay inside, stay safe and binge on books😊😊
I just wanted to tell you how much enjoy your channel. You seem to have such a positive attitude about the things you choose to share that it’s always a pleasure to tune it and you do an excellent job of describing and reviewing books. Millie and Clay are adorable too. 🙂
I think the city of dreaming books is a series called Zamonia. Have you read any of the others? I am curious if you have an order to read them in or if they can be read stand alone.
I know I am late but in case you are still curious: Even though the novels takes place in the same fictional world Zamonia they are all standalones which can be read in any order. The only exception is The Labyrinth of Dreaming Books which is a sequel to The City of Dreaming Books but imo it is not nearly as good as the other books.
Now that I have all the time in the world, I could definitely start reading books that most people haven't heard of so then I can sound smart when all this is done.
If you like Kingfountain, read the Muirwood series too (also by Jeff Wheeler). The worlds are all connected. I read these with my kids and we are now reading more of his books which are also connected to KingFountain and Muirwood.
This is the exact video I've been waiting for. I've started reading and recognizing some underrated/unknown books. Regan's recommendation suits my reading taste really well and hope to discover some hidden gems
Omg I love The Emma Normandy Trilogy by Patricia Bracewell. Great series if you’re into historical fiction. There’s currently only two books out, but I think i heard she’s been working on the last book!
Love Midwinterblood! I've read a lot of reviews that drag on the lack of character development, but I would argue that the main focus of the book isn't supposed to be complex, super fleshed out characters. Also, My Swordhand is Singing by Sedgwick is also awesome!
Finnikan of the Rock!!! I loved those books. I read Jellicoe Road, loved it and decided to look up other books by Melina Marchetta and found The Lumatere Chronicles. I devoured that trilogy in less than a week! You are literally the only one who I’ve ever heard mention Finnikan!!! This made me so happy 😊
Yes! Thank you for talking about Finnkin of the Rock! It's nice to see an Australian author/book being highlighted, especially with this series being out for some time now. If you like the Lumatere Chronicles I would highly suggest Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody
I have an underrated book series I think you’ll love- The Engelsfors Trilogy by Strandberg and Elfgren. Modern fantasy set in Switzerland focusing on five teenage girls burdened with the task of saving the world. They’re pretty long but super quick reads! I don’t think I’ve seen you talk about them before. 10/10 would recommend
I second your recommendation on Things in Jars! Such a unique, fascinating story 😊 Also I’m picking up Fireborne, after my current read, for the O.W.L.’s readathon and I’m so excited about it.
Good to see someone passionate about reading less well known books. I've found it harder and harder to find good alternative books. It seems like too many books become a 'thing' and then crowd out everything else. I will always recommend anything written by Charles De Lint for anyone who hasn't discovered him. Also Guy Gavriel Kay, Janny Wurts, The Night Watch series of books by Sergei Lukyanenko, Holly Black, Joseph Delaney's Spook's series of books & Robert Holdstock.
Amanda Hocking’s world of the Trylle. Any of the series would do, and it’s definitely an amazing set of reads. The third series in the world should be released soon! Also, pretty sure you read it already, but Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson!
Here’s a really underrated YA fantasy series- The Black Witch Chronicles by Laurie Forest. Right now two of the books are out and the next one comes out in June. They’re really great books with a high fantasy school setting- so if that sounds like something you’d like, I highly recommend them
There are some good reference that you have made however I think there is at least 3 maybe 4 of them I will check out probably pick up in the next few months... There are 1) Stolen Songbird 2) The Queen Prisoner 3) Finnikin of the rock and 4) the city of dreaming books. Love your videos
Y'all should read Snow Falling on Cedars. I read it a while ago so I don't really think I could do the plot justice if I tried to summarize it, but it's amazing
I love The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay (anything by him is honestly really good, but this one has been my personal favorite so far). Haven't heard much talk about it on booktube!
So glad you spoke up about The Malediction trilogy (stolen songbird)!! I started reading it at the beginning of the year and am currently on the third/final book. Wonderful writing. Great plot twists. Interesting politics. Cool magic. Tasteful romance.👍
Great video! I'm currently reading 'Things in Jars' thanks to you :) I ordered it at the library last time you mentioned it and I just got it. I'm also interested in The library of dreaming books but it is a bit more tricky to find. However, I tried the Lumater chronicles a few years ago (because you recommended it) but I didn't like the first one much...
I love these types of videos so much, especially because I read so many series that aren’t well known, so thank you for bringing the less popular to my knowledge ! 🙌🏼
Oooh I didn't realize Finnikin of the Rock was Melina Marchetta. I loved her Saving Francesca when I was in high school. It was one of my favs (contemporary though) Now I'm curious as to what her fantasy is like
Have you read the Kingkiller chronicles by Patrick Rothuss? Highly recommend it, the magic is rooted in science and it’s so well thought out! I plan I re-read the first 2 before the 3rd one comes out in summer cause there’s so many hidden clues that foreshadow for what comes up next and so many light bulb moments once you connect the dots
Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray is an EXCELLENT trilogy and it breaks my heart that not that many people know about it. It’s a space opera, enemies to lovers sort of story and it’s just so well done. The characters are wonderful. The main guy is definitely book boyfriend material.
Such a great list! If I’d heard of a book in this list it’s only through a previous recommendation from you but most are completely new, so guess I have some new titles to add to my TBR!
I literally bought Midwinterblood for €0,63 on Amazon last year. I had no clue about it whatsoever but just couldn't NOT pick it up for that price. Still, it's been gathering dust on my shelf since then... Now I'm really interested to read it! :D
I think it has been published now or is it still up on wattpad? I started that one but couldn't finish it for some reason. Heard great things about it tho
Does anyone have any tips for getting out of a reading slump? I thought I would be reading up a storm during this quarantine but I haven’t been able to find the motivation to read anything. 😔
Whenever I'm in slump I will just re-read a favorite book of mine! Especially one that I know will suck me into the story and have me hooked. Another thing I do is that if I don't feel like reading -- I just won't! Forcing myself to read will usually make me not want to at all. Hope this helps!
also you might try a graphic novel or two! you can finish them quickly and even if it's not that great they usually put me in the mood to read other books right after
I listed to audiobooks insteat. Especially an old favourite of mine, that is read by one of my favourite narrators will get me all hyped up again for storytelling and a different world to escape to.
Wow I actually haven’t heard about a bunch of these before... when I watched Hailey’s video (love her!) about the same thing, I knew every single book she mentioned lol, but I love both channels! This is just to say that I didn’t expect not to know so many books you’ve mentioned 😅
amazing books/series you probably haven't heard of: *sisters of the winter wood by rena rossner (amazing jewish historical fantasy by an own voices author) *the graceling trilogy by kristin cashore (one of the first YA series that was truly feminist and diverse - and it doesn't do it just to BE feminist and diverse - romance centric) *the faithful and the fallen series by john gwynne (AMAZING epic fantasy series - everything i wanted game of thrones to be) *a hero born by jin yong (translated from chinese focusing on basically a duel between two martial artists - featuring a character growing up under ghengis khan) *the dark ones series by rachel van dyken (alternative romance series centering on creatures called the dark ones) *white stag by kara barbieri (amazing adult fantasy focusing on goblins) *wink, poppy, midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke (creepy fairytale-esque story) *moonlight and whiskey by tricia lynne (amazing plus size new orleans rockstar romance) *strange grace by tessa gratton (polyamorous rep - horror) *empire of sand by tasha suri (Mughal India-inspired fantasy) *a pocketful of crows by joanne m harris (feels like a fairytale but its about revenge) *sea witch by sarah henning (dark little mermaid) *isle of blood and stone by makiia lucier (island centered adventure) *a conspiracy of stars by olivia a cole (amazing POC sci-fi)
Wen you explaned the book fire borne it reminded me of Dragan Duma by Patty van Delft. Exacly the same story if you ask me i have read all the Dragon Duma books.
annddddd... ive added more books to my TBR 😂 so lucky to have a booktuber like you that really gives the recs that arent floating around like they have been 💛
I REALLY recommend In the after by Demetria Lunetta it’s about a girl and she used to have an amazing life but then some new creatures land on their lands and it killed people and she was the only one alive for a long time but then she sees her mother and other ppl and reveals some secrets . You won’t put the book down until u finish it
I started Piers Anthony books when I was 9 and read the Xanth series as it came out but as of a few years ago I just couldn’t do it with the sexism anymore. Stollen Songbird is one of my favourite series. It should be way more popular.
Please read The Universe Versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence! Such an underrated book, haven't heard anyone to talk about it, but it's such a great contemporary, one of my all time favourites!
Finnikin of the Rock is by an Australian fantasy author. In general, I feel that Aussie fantasy writers don’t get the publicity or profile they deserve.
Oo def going to try quite a few of these- thanks!! Hmm - a few books I feel are at least somewhat less hyped is the Relentless series by Karen Lunch (great audiobook in audible my opinion!) And I've recently read (ok listened to in audible!) Alice in Zombieland which I loved and hadn't heard of before!
The Pellinor Series is so underrated and it makes me so mad 😂 it’s an amazing YA series (four books) with incredible world building, a great magic system, and just UGHH it’s so good.
The city of dreaming books is such an unicorn. I can't find it anywhere. There's no e-book on Amazon or scribd. The paperback edition is very expensive...
I need someone else to read Placebo Junkies by JC Carleson (under 1k reviews on Goodreads)! It's about a girl who makes a living by participating in medical trials and research studies and is trying to save up to fund a dream vacation for her and her boyfriend, who just beat cancer. She needs to rake in a lot of money fast, so she decides to do as many trials as possible, navigating the medical scene and scamming the researchers but the drugs begin to mess with her perceptions and things might not be as they seem... (I recommend not reading anything about this book or any reviews, it's also such a quick and entertaining read, very trippy as well.)
I suggest: A Trip to the Stars by Nicholas Christopher, I've noticed not alot of review on Goodreads & I've looked [cause it's the book I'm reading] no booktuber has not reviewed.
Speaking of books that deserve all the recognition and yet not enough poeple are talking about them! Ragen, you should read "Furyborn" by Claire Legrand. Dark adult fantasy. You'd love it.
I agree with Finnikin, think you made me aware of it years ago. Finnikin is a great book. I have Fireborn but havent read it yet. Things in Jars I have been aware of, you liking it puts it higher on my TBR. The city of dreaming books has a beautiful title, will defently check it out. I would recomend : geek girl by holly smale, wells and wong by robin stevens, mythos academy by jennifer estep.
My list of amazing books no one talks about would be: - The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott - Septimus Heap séries and PathFinder series by Angie Sage - Valkyrie trilogy by Kate O’Hearn
Ohhhh I've never read the Valkerie trilogy myself but my favorite books when I was a kid was the Pegasus series by Kate O'Hearn, so many good memories :3
It’s funny how I have all these books at home but I’ve never read any of them (my sister/brother got them). Might give them a try now that I’m stuck here!
Ace of Spades King Of Fools both by Amanda Foody Diamond City by Francesca Flores Shadowscent by P.M. Freestone There Will Come A Darkness by Katy Rose Pool These books are honestly so underrated
I actually read another one of Jeff Wheeler's series before realizing it was a series in his universe. It was The Harbinger series and has great Victorian vibes. Absolutely loved it ♥
hey regan! just an idea, but have you considered making the font of the text in your thumbnails bigger and bolder?? I remember they used to be this way before! just letting you know because sometimes they're a bit hard to read, and making them bolder would also be eye catching!
14:29 It would be really cool if you did a tier ranking of fantasy series you've read!
The City of dreaming Books and other books of the author Walter Moers made me fall in love with fantasy (:
I am german and to see it mentioned on an american channel is great. I actually recommended it to you probably about a year a go because I thought you would love it :)
Nothing can ever beat the idea of the Orm
My favorite writer of all time
Moers is so damn good.
Y'know. As a treat.
Oooo...I love The City of Dreaming Books!
Regan works so hard and produces SO MUCH high quality content! Loving all these great recs😄
thank you for putting the books in the description - sometimes i miss the name of the book and im like OOOO that sounds interesting what is that and then i have to try and rewind to find it - list is so much easier. It might also be helpful to include timestamps when you start talking about each book
Y'all NEED to check out these underrated gems:
- Daughter of No Worlds
- The Oremere Chronicles
- Wolf by Wolf
- Fortuna Sworn
Nihal Fatima I love Wolf by Wolf and I feel like nobody’s heard of it
The Wolf by Wolf duology was really good. But also heartbreaking.
STOLEN SONGBIRD IS SO UNDERRATED! I LOVE THE TRILOGY SO MUCH 🥰
“The trolls can’t leave” wow I never thought I would relate to trolls but yet here we are 😂
Omg I just saw Haily in bookland do this and I was just thinking to myself, “hmm, Regan should do this” and here it is!!!!
PS I’ve never been this early!!!
Stay inside, stay safe and binge on books😊😊
Love Hailey and was very inspired by her!
I just wanted to tell you how much enjoy your channel. You seem to have such a positive attitude about the things you choose to share that it’s always a pleasure to tune it and you do an excellent job of describing and reviewing books. Millie and Clay are adorable too. 🙂
I love Melina Marchetta's Looking For Alibrandi - now I feel SO inclined to pick up Finnikin of the Rock! Thank you!!
Listen to you talk about The Lumatere Chronicles makes me so HAPPY!
I think the city of dreaming books is a series called Zamonia. Have you read any of the others? I am curious if you have an order to read them in or if they can be read stand alone.

City of the dreaming books is simply the best book i‘ve ever read
Now that I have all the time in the world, I could definitely start reading books that most people haven't heard of so then I can sound smart when all this is done.
I literally only recognise 2 titles - I ordered City of Dreaming Books after you first read it and loved it! Great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I LOVED the “among the hidden” series when I was younger and I’ve never heard anyone talk about it
That was one of my favorite series!
If you like Kingfountain, read the Muirwood series too (also by Jeff Wheeler). The worlds are all connected. I read these with my kids and we are now reading more of his books which are also connected to KingFountain and Muirwood.
This channel is helping me stay positive! Thank you!❤️
I have wanted to read The City Of Dreaming Books for ages now and can't find it anywhere in Canada 😩
Great video, thank you ! The city of dreaming books is such a great book. I really want to reread it soon. Things in jar sounds very interesting too !
When it says "Posted 6 seconds ago" and you just have to click it
Love Midwinterblood!
Yes! Stolen Songbird - and the Malediction Trilogy as a whole - is so so good! I definitely recommend to anyone who loves fantasy^^
The Engelfors trilogy is from Sweden, not Switzerland :)
Maria Olsson Brain fart, sorry!
I checked out finnikin rock from the library before quarantine and now I’m so excited to read it!
it is PERFECT. Book #2 is even better
I second your recommendation on Things in Jars! Such a unique, fascinating story 😊
Also I’m picking up Fireborne, after my current read, for the O.W.L.’s readathon and I’m so excited about it.
I love Kingfountain! Muirwood is great too.
Congrats you made one of these where I actually haven't heard of the books! Normally when I see these I've heard about all the books already!
I read Midwinterblood after you recommended it a couple of years ago and I LOVED it. It was so unusual!
Amanda Hocking’s world of the Trylle. Any of the series would do, and it’s definitely an amazing set of reads. The third series in the world should be released soon! Also, pretty sure you read it already, but Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson!
Great list! Two books I really enjoyed that I never hear about on booktube are "Strange Sweet song" and "mistress of nothing".
The City of Dreaming Books sounds like a better version of The Starless Sea.
Totally agree with 'Finnikin of the Rock'. One of my favourite series of all the time! I loved the whole trilogy.
Great video! I'm currently reading 'Things in Jars' thanks to you :)
I ordered it at the library last time you mentioned it and I just got it.
You can find all kind of books here
My favorite underrated trilogy is May Bird by Jodi Lynn Anderson! It's a middle grade trilogy that came out in 2006 and I love it so much!
Oooh I didn't realize Finnikin of the Rock was Melina Marchetta. I loved her Saving Francesca when I was in high school. It was one of my favs (contemporary though) Now I'm curious as to what her fantasy is like
I just finished Finnikin of the Rock based on your review and I LOVED IT!!! So good!
Oh Regan please do a tier ranked recommendations video!!!
A lot of booktubers have been doing it lately and I want yours so bad!
Have you read other books by Walter Moers? You should definetely try Rumo if you haven't ;)
Underrated books- A french girl in New York series by Anna Adams, The unexpected gift by Ajay K Pandey
Hey Regan! Please do a tier ranking! It would be so much fun! :) love your videos!
Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray is an EXCELLENT trilogy and it breaks my heart that not that many people know about it. It’s a space opera, enemies to lovers sort of story and it’s just so well done. The characters are wonderful. The main guy is definitely book boyfriend material.
Your really cranking out these videos--not that I'm complaining!
i just started the queen's poisoner after seeing you read it in one of your reading vlogs!! it's sooooo good I'm flying through it as well
Such a great list!
I‘d love it if you did some tier ranking videos!! So much fun ♥️
You guys should check out " Storm and Silence". It has the most unique characters and it is an extremely funny book in general.
Sarah reread something you loved, and read something easy I prefer reading romance right now because it’s easier to follow and very cute!
Thanks for all the tips everyone! I really appreciate them 😊
I love Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte is her debut novel and is really good.
Wow I actually haven’t heard about a bunch of these before... when I watched Hailey’s video (love her!) about the same thing, I knew every single book she mentioned lol, but I love both channels! This is just to say that I didn’t expect not to know so many books you’ve mentioned 😅

These books sound so interesting!!! I'll definitely will be picking some of them up! Thanks for the recs!!
I didn't hear about these titles. Thanks for the recs. I will be checking out couple of them.
You won’t put the book down until u finish it
I love this black top! And also the book recs!
Reminded me I need to buy hardbacks of marcus sedgwick’s books! Midwinter was haunting!
I started Piers Anthony books when I was 9 and read the Xanth series as it came out but as of a few years ago I just couldn’t do it with the sexism anymore. Stollen Songbird is one of my favourite series. It should be way more popular.
You should do an updated bookshelf tour!!
Surprised that you didn’t mention the Iskari series (first book is The Last Namsara)! So good!
Forgot to mention:
If you like the Iskari series, you’d like “I am Dragon”
I’m halfway through the Queen’s Poisoner (free with prime reading FYI) and it’s so great!!!’ Gosh so many great sounding books. Thank you!!!!
Please read The Universe Versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence! Such an underrated book, haven't heard anyone to talk about it, but it's such a great contemporary, one of my all time favourites!
Marcus Sedgwick was one of my favourite authors when I was younger! I’ve never heard anyone talk about him!
Wow! I haven't heard anyone talk about Piers Anthony in years. His Xanth series is a lot of fun too.
That sucks :(
Here in Germany it's in every bookstore (the author is German) and it's not that expensive.
I've heard of The Stolen Songbird and Finnikin of the Rock
Bought Fireborne because of your recommendation, hope to get to it soon 😊 also have Stolen Songbird, need to get to all of these books!
Read dragonfly by lelia mechan. It also has spies and the most beautiful cover
Speaking of books that deserve all the recognition and yet not enough poeple are talking about them! Ragen, you should read "Furyborn" by Claire Legrand. Dark adult fantasy. You'd love it.
I never heard anyone talking about "The Only Girl in the Room" by Marie Benedict and it is such a good book
The Unseen World and the Queen's Prisoner seem super interesting! I really haven't heard about pretty much any of these.
I love Queen’s Poisoner! You should definitely check it out
@@veronicapombo6235 I will have to look for it and pick it up
I agree with Finnikin, think you made me aware of it years ago.
My list of amazing books no one talks about would be:
- The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott
- Septimus Heap séries and PathFinder series by Angie Sage
- Valkyrie trilogy by Kate O’Hearn
Ohhhh I've never read the Valkerie trilogy myself but my favorite books when I was a kid was the Pegasus series by Kate O'Hearn, so many good memories :3
I also read the Septimus Heap serie as a teenager. I loved it and it's true that you don't hear much about it. I feel like re-reading it now... 😍
It’s funny how I have all these books at home but I’ve never read any of them (my sister/brother got them). Might give them a try now that I’m stuck here!
Ace of Spades
King Of Fools
both by Amanda Foody
Diamond City by Francesca Flores Shadowscent by P.M. Freestone
There Will Come A Darkness
by Katy Rose Pool
These books are honestly so underrated
On A Pale Horse Yay! Great series. Loved it.
Yessss! I want more underrated books videos!
