Knowing Paul's love for Rock history, I'd guess he and the boys (with Hiram and Steve rather than Sid and Anton) had the most fun with James Brown when he came on in '82 or 3.
This was released in North America as the single after "World Where You Live." I bought the 45 when it appeared in the record stores in November 1987, but I never heard it on the radio, and it deserved better.
I love this deep album cut. They always were so full of joy when they played. Watching Paul Hester play that stand up snare with such gusto breaks my heart knowing he suffered from depression that, eventually, led to suicide. I was lucky enough to see the original lineup twice before then.
I think I only caught them once as the original trio (but I was in the front row and Paul did give me and about 5 others a sloppy, zany, high-five before exiting at the end 🤗 ). Upon finding out his girlfriend was pregnant, Paul left a later tour just 3 days before my college friends and I were scheduled to see them play in Portland, OR. The drummer for Sheryl Crowe (their opening act) had to fill in. I felt so bad when I found out about his suicide, because I never even realized he suffered from depression. Such is often the case, I've learned. 😔 I do remember an MTV interview in which Neil said something about Paul having a lot of "demons" inside him, but it was too cryptic. I wasn't sure what he meant. I was also only 16, so not too savvy about the deep internal struggles so many people grapple with their entire lives. 😥
Paul Shaeffer and his band were simply incredible.., they laid down amazing backup for so many greats acts over the years.., and Crowded House.. damn! what can you say other than amazing!
Wow!! One classic and fun band...Paul Hester at 3:08 is amazing, shows us the natural rhythm and energu he added to this magical element called Crowded House.
Neil Finn is a master composer, lyricist and poet. I have long wondered where the inspiration for melodies and cords which seem as though they were meant to be together come from. Paul Hester is missed.
as an aussie i have to thank dave for being smart and kind enough to give them a go. and their energy just sparks the house band up. a bloody good time had by all, which is what it's really about .

I had a friend working for Capitol/EMI when C.H. released its first album and when the band first played my town (at a small club), they invited the reps (including my friend) to hang out after the show at the hotel. The band was watching Dave's show with much interest and Paul said, "oh we have to go on this show some day! We'll do Stupid Band Tricks!" - anyway, he got half of his wish!
I Vividly remember this! I was living in Tisdale Saskatchewan, 16 years old & miserably Homesick for Alberta, & this album was my Wonderwall... I taped this off Letterman & watched it a Ga-zillion times!

@@mikedeveau7075Don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible. It played ok, more like an electric and sounded small, kind of like one of those travel guitars. Your comment cracked me up though!
James L Roberts Same here. Love them and Split Enz. Wish I saw them live. Small is sort of what imagined with the guitar. They were regrouping pre covid, might get a chance to see a version of them. The original three would have been so cool.
I seriously doubt Dave’s house band ever had this much fun before or ever after….

One of my favorite concerts ever was their Farewell To The World on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. Magical.

Love love love , Crowded house , Split Enz and anything Neil Finn writes
Absolutely! The best performance by anyone on Letterman.
Just saw them last night in NYC. Magical ✨. So many Aussies and NZers there ❤️

A poet and a wonderful song writer.....Paul Hester is missed
Neil Finn - never had the recognition he deserved
He's still alive and gigging!
Wrong, sings with Fleetwood Mac now!
Error....
@@stevejager8088 And their fans constantly bitch that he isn't Lindsey.😉
Not from the American public, no. Other artists and much of Europe recognize his genius in a big way as do, obviously, Australia and New Zealand.
Brilliant performance by a great band. Neil Finn amazes me with his song writing.
Lovely melding of Neil, Nick, and Paul with Paul, Will, Sid, and Anton. Good old days.

Thank you MUCHO MUCHO MUCHO for my fave Crowded House song. Never got to see them live in the 80's. I regret that. This is very valuable to me.
I saw this when it initially aired..genius song...miss you Paul Hester...RIP.

Paul was essential to this band.
always loved Split Enz and equally Love this line-up!!! great version

Great interview
...and a good time was had by one and all!
Great Song, Great fcking performance!
Rip Paul 😔🙏
It never used to be that bad
But neither was it great
Somewhere in the middle then
Content and much too safe
Oh tell me please
Why it takes so long
To realise when there's something wrong
Lay me out with your heart
Now we're getting somewhere
Push me back to the start
Now we're getting somewhere
Take me out let me breathe
Now we're getting somewhere
When I'm with you I don't care
Where it is I'm falling
There's money in the Bible Belt
Hugs for daddy too
Three wishes for eternity
We've got some work to do
Oh tell me please, tell me what went wrong
Cos I believe there is something wrong
When you took me to your room
I swear I said surrender
When you opened up your mouth
I saw the words fall out
Though nothing much has changed
I swear I will surrender
There is pain in me heart
We can choose what we choose to believe
Curt cobain was once asked in an interview how it feels to be the best songwriter in the world. He said 'I dont know - you'll have to ask Neil fin'.
It was actually Paul McCartney

Interesting to see Nick playing rhythm guitar here.
And this is better than the album cut by the way.

What a blast! Looks like they had a heck of a lot of fun. Look at Paul Hester around 3:10. Love it.

I think 'interview' might be a bit of a stretch unfortunately for us.
Even Lettermen didn't want to wade into the New Zealand or Australian? claims, staying on safe ground with "Antipodean"
Fair enough too. A real Anzac lineup.
Antipowhatnow? Crickey, that's a big word for us croc wrestlers & sheep farmers!
Ain't half been some clever bastards
Neil Finn does his best John Lennon here, and Sid McGinnis contributes a ringing guitar solo at 2:55. Sounds like a classic pub sing-along song.
Jeff Daniels on bass ? 😜
Nick is playing rhythm guitar.......? What strange world is this?
where was Tim Fuun?
now i wonder "who's Tommy?"
All the way from where???
Mark Whippy - seriously? I can clarify if you’re serious :-)
Neil and Nick with the two uncoolest guitars of all time. Good version of the song though. It fleshes out the busker like vibe of the original.
Ha! I bought one of those because of Neil Finn. They had one in the Hard Rock Cafe in Honolulu. And right, it was not a great guitar.
What was the main issue with it, as far as playing?
@@mikedeveau7075Don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible. It played ok, more like an electric and sounded small, kind of like one of those travel guitars. Your comment cracked me up though!
