when you realize how close Neil and Paul were, being friends, and Neil helping him get into Split Enz and then the transition to Crowded House, you see how their harmonizing and ultimate back-and-forth with each other, you also realize how beautiful they were together as musicians and friends. i still cannot watch the ARIA awards video of Neil performing "Better Be Home Soon" without crying my eyes out. Neil must have been so heartbroken that night.
this clip & performance is a treasure .the love and respect flowing both ways is very hard won and one of those very rare times that we a fortunate to experience.remember crowded house said good bye to us and said thanks at the opera house and we came to say goodbye and thanks.
what amazes me about this concert (i wasn't there, i own the dvd), is that even though Paul left the band 2 years earlier, Neil still let him in for a last concert tour, and they both seem to get along so well. Neil seemed so devastated by Paul's untimely death (the ARIA awards video of Neil singing "Better Be Home Soon" says it all). I truly believe that Neil and Paul still remained best friends, even after the break up of the band. someday, they will be reunited, and they will play again
1996. It still kills me that I wasn't there for this - their last concert, and free. Paul Hester would have just turned 50 this year. Good stuff lads. :)
I was at this concert, just amazing. 100,00 people to see this concert on the forecourt of Sydney Opera House. Also on the bill Powderfinger. Great bands, Great night. Hester the Jester!!!!
Your post is a real eye-opener that all of the love of a mass of people isn't as powerful as depression. I had a wonderful sister who died from her battle with anoexia which is one of the most insideous forms of depression and truly hard to treat. Depression is a battle within the mind that is clumsily treated often times. I'm still hopeful there might be some amazing breakthroughs for people in situations such as Paul and my sister. She passed away of a heart-attack with no other contributors other than her anorexia. No I'm not saying Paul was anorexic...he just suffered from severe depression which encompases many forms.
Was gonna post "Paul Hester RIP" and have only just read that Paul Jones is gone too! Wow! Sad loss and am now listening to lots of back catalog Crowded House with a heavy heart! "Not the girl you think you are" up next, but with heavy heart.
funny, i can listen to this song in any other way be it from the studio version, to any live one, and i still hear Neil say, "Go Mark!" LOL GO MARK! he is awesome!
Now I know Paul Hester was in the Fruit Salad video with The Wiggles, but I must say his antics on the stage are also very reminiscent of the Wiggly Dancer Ben (Head) Murray......it's like they channel each other in enthusiasm! Must be an Australian thing!
no it's not wrong, it's normal as all get out! from what i've read and talked to people about, he was a friend to his fans, known or not. i never got to meet him, personally (met Neil, Nick, Mark and Matt), but i feel as if he is a part of me nonetheless, and i felt that even after meeting them, there was someone missing. i was the only one to hold up a lighter during "Better Be Home Soon", and i got some looks. Paul was the humour behind CH, and he will always be missed by his true fans.
Seems like Neil and Paul of course knew each other longer. Nick I know said he had wished the band had stayed together but I guess it ended because Paul just didn't want to go on and Neil thought it would change the CH sound without Paul and I think he was right.

I'm bot too proud to say I absolutely balling my eyes out watching it too.
its hard to believe that SM only got to number 66 in australia and 26 in NZ. i think we had been spoilt by so many great songs..
This is still so wholesome! Talk about a band who bloody love each other and let it out in their music! Great video, thanks for sharing!

4th row from the front my first concert!! Absolutely epic, still remember it like yesterday !!
Paul and Neil were so adored by each other, the best of friends and i know that everyone is gonna miss the love they showed to one another :') x
For my money, Italian Plastic is one of the best Crowded House songs - which is really saying something.

That's exactly how I feel. That's why Paul Hester was such a great performer - even though I never knew him, I felt as though I did.
Such a great show and funny band. Lucky public. RIP Paul
Neil was the shot of spirit in that band. Hard.
r.i.p paul and pete ;'(

Weird to see Hessie introducing Peter Jones. RIP both!
@npwd It's only natural. :)
