very wrong take about Robert and Erin. Robert didn't seem to really try to hook up with her, and literally told her he was a ride she would not survive.
Can’t hate a guy who declares himself a “Lizard King”. That being said there’s sort of a missed opportunity with R. California. He’s incompetent, but he’s also rich and successful? If that was all true it be fascinating to see how that worked exactly.
I mean he obviously had some way with words that allowed him to talk people into doing what he wants. He talked Jo Bennett out of her own job and David Wallace into giving him a million dollars for him to "support" "college-aged" female gymnasts in developing countries. He's just got his speech level maxed out and is intelligent enough to fill the role/job he's conned himself into.
Would've been fun if the writers could have brought in subtle references to other James Spader roles to add to the intrigue. Somehow references "Wallstreet" "Stargate" or the "Blacklist" like Robert California was there as some strangley veiled witness protection program or something...but never actually come out and say it while dropping subtle clues.
I love Robert California because it's just Spader. He has the same cadence in moslty everything he does. That's why I rewatch age of Ultron and have watched the blacklist 3 times over.
but to be serious, he was great, because he was so secretive, so intense, so different. both Michael and Robert were not the best bosses, but both were incredibly entertaining, just in completely different ways. Way better than the guy that will Ferrell played, I don't even know his name anymore.
Robert California is a bit like Creed. Give them a little and they’ll run a mile. Give them too much and they’ll crumble. Robert California was just way too intense to be used so much. It didn’t help that Andy was a shell of a character through the seasons so Robert overpowered everyone every time he was onscreen which, again, was too much.
Except Creed was funny because you never really saw the people he hurt, and his goofiness didn't seem malicious. Robert California just seemed to serve no purpose whatsoever.
@@wvu05 I liked him at times because he gave a bit of an edge to a show where everything started to all feel a bit too happy and perfect. Without him in Season 9 they tried to replace that feeling by splitting Jim and Pam up.
Robert wasn't replacing Michael he was the next person in the Jan/Ryan/Charles/David/Jo role. And he crushed it. He was not Michaels replacement. Andy was a fine replacement until they torched his character. I'm convinced the Office creatives were tired of working on the show and torched it on purpose the show became really mean spirited in that final season.
Love the vid - Make a how Rich is Robert California video! Like you touched on, it feels like California was never written to be ‘human’. He was more of a device to bounce some new comedy (dark/weirdness) off the characters we came to love over the years.
i absolutely loved the shit out of robert california, his opening bit about sex, plus his apparent secret degenerate behavior i just can't help but love the idea of him lol
I should preface this with I am a huge fan of James Spader and I can confidentially say he's probably my favorite actor.. So I'm a tad bit bias :P Robert California is one of my favorite characters in the show. In my experience, people really only hate him in the context of Michael Scott's replacement. One of the biggest crimes is never having a scene between Michael and Robert. While James Spader isn't a very comedic actor I think his performance on the office is still incredible. While he will never be Michael Scott, he's still a great character, and I can only dream of what ONE scene between the two of them would be like. Imagine if Michael never left, but Robert still became CEO of Sabre. ROBERT: "Michael, I hear rumblings that you were once in an intense sexual relationship with your former boss, Jan?" MICHAEL: "Yes.. But I ended things" ROBERT: "Is it true though that you got back together with her after her latin-american breast augmentation?" MICHAEL: "I wouldn't exactly say-" ROBERT: Since the dawn of mankind, women have used their breasts to manipulate, weaponize and exploit the sexual desires of men. Wars have been waged, fought, won and lost over the female breast, Michael Scott. Do you understand what I'm telling you? I thought so. So is this potential weakness of yours something I may have to worry about in your performance as my regional manager?" It would be kind of like how Michael tried his usual nonsense with Charles, but instead of Charles' hard shell, it would've been with Robert's either brilliance or psychosis and at times, downright perversion. Potentially the most uncomfortable cringe comedy in the series. That's just my opinion, though :) Great video!
I love Robert California and most people I've talked to do too. I think this is a good character breakdown but it seems to be less about people not liking Robert and more how he compares to Michael. Two entirely different people (as you explain) but Michael being a more honest, real person doesn't mean Robert is a bad character in comparison. Certainly not hated either.
He's an interesting character, but nothing about him felt genuine. How am I supposed to feel invested in a character that manipulates everyone, he comes in contact with? lol
I think this video is based on a faulty premise. I've yet to meet a single person who's watched the entirety of The Office that actually doesn't like Robert California. IMO the point of his character is that he is like a more successful version of Michael. Like Michael, he is eccentric and lacks social awareness, but has an insane ability to sell to people. The difference, though, is that Robert was able to work his own strengths in a way that Michael was not able to. And that's why he was so successful.
One big problem early...I mean wasn't it Erin that stated that it was Robert California that shut down the idea of sex? So he was clearly not trying to take advantage.
I feel like Robert was a really interesting character but he just got boring after a few episodes, I wish it turned out he was actually really poor or something and that's why he's so confident to try and pretend he has a better life than he does, but he's actually really rich?? Its just a really lazy route for the character :/
I feel like I’m gonna be the one commenter who’s gonna agree with not liking the Lizard King. He was okay at the beginning of the season, his vibe was different and overall the mystery behind him was entertaining. But as Season 8 went on, California just derailed into a really creepy and hyperactively sexual character. California just didn’t have the heart or the right comedy to replace Michael.
I somewhat agree, although I am glad I watched season 8 and 9 even if I didn’t like them (especially 9) but the last few times I’ve rewatched the show, I watch the first 7 seasons, then skip ahead to the final 3 episodes, I did think those were really well done, especially A.A.R.M and the finale. Unpopular opinion, but I honestly didn’t hate the Will Ferrell episodes. I understand why people do because of how Deangelo changed his entire character each episode, but I think maybe that was the whole point of his character? I don’t know
I can understand why people hate Robert or Nellie, but despite hating them as people, they are absolutly hilarious and add alot to the comedic possibilities of the show. I would never want to know either of them tho lol!
My issue with Robert California isn't that he's unlikeable or different from Michael. It's that I don't find any of his storylines or interactions with the other characters funny or interesting. A lot of his scenes consist of other characters staring at him confused and bewildered. In my opinion he doesn't have a strong dynamic with any of the other characters, despite appearing in a lot (way too many if you ask me) of season 8 episodes. As a result whenever he's on screen I wish I was watching someone else instead. So I guess my dislike doesn't necessarily stem from Robert California himself, but from the way he's integrated into the show. I think some of the hate Nellie gets has a similar origin. The show asks us to go along with Nellies evolution from villain-ish to office regular, but it doesn't accomplish this by having her character grow or redeem herself. We just sort of learn more stuff about her, and while the additional information about her backstory adds dimension, it doesn't constitute a character arc. I don't dislike Nellie anywhere near as much as Robert California, but they're in the same boat of characters whose inclusion should've been thought out better by the writers.
The main reason i didnt watch thenoffice was because of steve. I dont think hes funny at all. Him or will Farrell. Hate them. But if robert california was the main, oh yes, id watch it.
@@10KProductions idc. No one will convince me will Farrel is funny. Steve has good rolls, but his type of comedy is very...basic for my tastes. I don't like posh humor, if they can all it humor, but farther jokes and yelling loudly just doesn't do it for me. Idk why, but James Spaders character was just so intense and absurd, yet we all know some rich people like that, so its sadly accurate. But amazing to see. Idk. I liked Steve in that crazy stupid love movie, or whatever the name was. A few others, but the office, even English version just never did it for me.
What a stupid commentary The show didn’t have hard time replacing Michael the producers decided to go that route on having multiple scenarios who was gonna succeed Michael. Secondly Michael Scott was obnoxious insubordinate attention seeker narcissist character he literally was everything we hate in the real world. Thirdly Robert California had cool swag wit intelectual character traits something most men would love to have and be.
I really resent those comments disparaging Robert California and putting Michael in a pedestal, you got them wrong I really like for you to delete your video.

I'd love a video on theoretical economics of the Pokeverse, either that or an in-depth analysis of Fram.

Talk about the mess that is Superjail’s finances and how broke The Warden is.
A great character doesn't have to be a good character. Love me some Lizard King.
James Spader brought such a bizarre vibe and energy to Robert California that made him interesting to watch.😂

Robert California's character is expanded greatly in The Blacklist, where he is actually revealed to have been a crime boss all along

The most import part is simply: Michael saw himself as part of the office, as opposed to Robert seeing himself as above.
