When I was younger My Dad wanted me to listen to this and as I did he would describe what was happening with the sea bashing up against the cave walls. He made it all worthwhile listening to. Later when my dad died we had this playing at his funeral. So very moving.💙
Sorry to hear about your Dad. I've been listening to this wonderful and powerful piece of music because my Dad has told me he would like it played at his funeral. Fingal's Cave changed his life as a school boy. Having been evacuated during the Second World War he struggled in school, then one day his favourite teacher played this record and it just opened up a whole new world of classical music, which he still loves to this day, now in his 86th year!
57 years old from the Caribbean. My Scottish aunty just sent me this piece of music and all i could say is OMG its is so beautiful. Listening to this is like the music is painting a picture in your thoughts❤❤❤ so full if emotion and excitement. Its for the sole
The Hebrides means very much to me, since that was the piece of music I constanty listened to during the last months before my beloved grandfather died. He was my best friend. I was 18 yrs old when he died. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece!!
This piece of music always pulls me into childhood memories of being out at sea in rough conditions in a small boat, smelling the salty seawater and a mixture of old fish, rust, wet wood and my damp woollen clothes as waves crashed without mercy one then another and another without regard for us been swallowed up by the deep green ocean. Though a God-fearing child, I knew my distress was never heard..
Fingal's Cave is on the uninhabited island of Staffa in Scotland. If you want to go there, take a look at the timetable for The Waverley Paddle Steamer. In good weather, it's a magnificent treat.
I agree totally! This wonderful artist was, among the pianist composers, the most precocious genius, having written at only 15 his Rondo Capriccioso, a piece which is part of any virtuoso repertoire! Not even Mozart produced such a piano piece at such an early age!
Love this the sea is vivid in my mind, was introduced to this by my Mother when I was about 5 years, it was on Radio then , no television that came later, but always see the sea in my minds eye and my Mother , and Fingal's Cave when I listen to this.....wonderful.
wow!! we listened to it at school and it was just like "Yes, i wanna have this!!" it is really impressing, not only the music, but also the pictures i found in the internet...
Really good performance. The faster this piece is played by a good ork with a good conductor, the better. This is among the many classical music pieces played for cues on the Lone Ranger radio show. Like at 2:48 to 3:28. He is yet another great composer who just happens to be of Jewish background. :)
>>The faster this piece is played by a good ork with a good conductor, the better. Bravo! Can't agree more! And can't understand those who love slow interpretations!
going to staffa this weekend and i may sing this loudly to the terror and dismay of my fellow boattrippers as we approach the island. peace and love to you all and i hope im not marooned there.
this is a compostion of utter beauty and poerty, for me the same feelings of musicality are found in GABRIEL FAURE`S PAVANE though of course, the two works couldn`t any more different in structure....
***** the island you're asking about is one of the Inner Hebrides chain, off the coast of Scotland. Fingal's Cave, the inspiration for this overture, is also on an island in the Inner Hebrides. Felix Mendelssohn's visits to Great Britain inspired some of his best work, and he was much more appreciated in Britain than in his native land (owing to growing anti-Semitism) until after his death.
@Soccer1296 good question--but Ithink the cave figured prominently into the composing of the piece--if one reads his letters to his family regarding it, one can see this clearly--the influence. Its not a song, but an overture.
@windstorm1000 correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure that Mendelssohn wrote this from a cave looking out into the majestic New World, America. Although its Fingal's Cave, the cave has no significance in terms of the definition of the song, but rather the landscape Mendelsohhn saw. :)
I only just heard this on a TV programme and I didn't know what it was called XD typed in te mans name (dad told me it was mendelson - misspelled coz I didn't know at the time how to spell it but I do now XD ) and I found something on wikipedia saying orchestral works and stuff, it came up with Fingal's Cave and I thought to myself "Hey that sounds interesting! Might check it out on youtube" :D and low and behold... the same piece tha was on TV!!! XD brilliant how I do things ain't it just? XD
I have to agree with windstorm1000 that the orchestra in this rendition's hurrying through the piece. The tempo needs to be slower so the deep notes and strings can be fuller.
Our world is so fortunate to have Felix Mendelssohn's music still with us. I hope it will be forever.

The most beautiful, atmospheric piece of music. Could listen all day. You can easily visualise the waves crashing in and out of Fingal's Cave.

Sabina Lundahl so sorry for your loss. 😢
One of the most underrated composers of all time.
This is absolutely a masterpiece! One of the best ever composed.
This music is produced naturally from these mountains???
Iconic and sublime at once.
Right on. That's one of the attributes of having an Italian conductor like Toscanini. Italian orks and conductors are known for lively tempos.
I agree totally! This wonderful artist was, among the pianist composers, the most precocious genius, having written at only 15 his Rondo Capriccioso, a piece which is part of any virtuoso repertoire! Not even Mozart produced such a piano piece at such an early age!
Visited the island yesterday. As beautiful as I imagined, and even better with my memories of this gorgeous work playing in my mind :)
Sheer brilliance. The mental images this wonderful composition conjurs up, the atmospheric tones.A masterpiece.

In the middle of the cliff.....it reminds me of a huge "bar-code". What an amazingly weird/cool looking geological formation!
enchante merci beacoup Felix medelssohn
Great video - just come back from a trip to Staffa and it's even more amazing than it looks here. Turquoise seas and the most incredible rocks
Happy 2012. This is so beautiful and defies description. Mendelssohn forever!!
Thank you aharon, great music and great video.
One of my all time favorite pieces i've ever played! it's an amazing piece!

A masterpiece.......
In the Isles of the Hebrides, off the coast of Scotland.
We walked into morning assembly to this at Barrowford School
Sublime...

5:15 my favorite moment
@GrannyTenderstone
I don't blame you, this is indeed a wonderful composition.

WHEN I LISTEN MENDELSSOHN I REMEMBER OF LAMARTINE
the perfect musical inspiration. this version too fast though.
@windstorm1000 haha silly me i was just writing quickly: yes it is an overture. :) and i can understand where you are coming from.
just realized that this plays in L'Age d'Or
Inky and the mynah bird brought me here! 😂

hahaha..you are so right.
Inki and the minah bird brought me here
Ha ha! Me too! Many years ago I watched the cartoon and then listened to this overture on a vinyl record (showing my age! 😂)
Minah bird! :')

You don't know much about classical music. He is very well known. Read up.
someones out of tune
Hahahaha, i think it's an oboe!
Totally agree. It's a pity that he's famous only for this stupid wedding march.
