    Tamko premium was notorious for that. Doesn't look like a gaf to me, but I would know if I saw the back side

      Haha I know, I didn't realize I said that until I watched it back. But I did get the date right at the end.

    You gotta get some rest. Would love to see some Larry Haun style roofing repair and renovation videos! I understand your explanations on a basic water shedding principle but not the nuance you offer on nail placement and tactics and strategies for layout. Appreciate you sharing your expertise.

    GAF is known for the splits.

    Could you give a little background - I’m guessing bad install voided the warranty; so neither manufacturer nor insurance will pay? And secondly, how old is that roof? Out of pocket twice within a few years of initial work?
    Also, since you’re out there giving a quote, I’m guessing the homeowner not using the first roofer...
    Get well soon and God bless. 😊

    I'd be more inclined to think that the installation was done in cold weather and the installer dropped the bundle to separate the stiffness sticking. As soon as fiberglass shingle is dropped it will shatter the fiberglass mat and you won't see the problem for years till the shingles start to dry out.

      Some people do break the shingles when they are frozen with ice, and they try to bend them.
      This roof, no, because the shingle cracks would not lineup perfectly with such random install patterns throughout the roof.

      When it's below 35 degrees all you have to do is drop the bundle on the corner of either side and it will stress shatter the fiberglass mat. In 1981 when the fiberglass shingles first came out I dropped a bundle over the ridge to cut ridge caps and the whole bundle shattered straight through in line with the cut-out 3-tabs and I had 26 one tabs . The other guy's that I was working with couldn't believe it. We were extremely careful after that. I did a roof inspection 8 years ago on a new High School for a Law firm and the first thing I asked was if it was installed in the winter (affirmed February) and the entire area was full of the the same pattern as your damaged corners. I pulled a few of the shingles and the upper opposite corners had the same shatter breaks.

    So this was ownes corning 50 year shingle, not gaf timbertex

    The color pattern as well as the tab pattern does not look right for Gaf, they both look like O.C. those are not Timbertex cap, the Timbertex have double cap thickness, plus a third layer to stack it up, I currently have two clients that have these exact same shingles, with the EXACT same issue. They have left over shingle bundles in wrappers form the original install, both the original owner, both the first roof on the house, both around 15-17 years old. Both are OWENS CORNING 50 year shingles. We have almost no GAF in this area, but quite a few of these ridge caps, it was Owens Corning’s version (though one layer thinner) of Gaf Timbertex.

      You know what, I think you are right! It's been years since i've used that crap. I remember the timber text being super thick, and when you'd fold it over a steep ridge, it would crack.

    So this is a shingle failure? wtf !!

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes it looks to be bad. With that said though, it needs to be the original owner or have transferred the warranty. Shingle manufacturers don't cover much because of things like that. Even when they do it's depreciated out.
