Recipe Synopsis Peel and slice 4 large sweet potatoes. Boil potatoes for 15 - 20 minutes until partially tender. Drain water from potatoes, except for about 1 cup. Add 3 cups sugar, 1-1/2 sticks of butter, and 2 T vanilla extract. Place pot back on heat until boiling. Lower heat, cover pot, and cook for about 20 minutes. This allows sugar to dissolve and liquid to thicken. Uncover pot. Allow potatoes to cook for about 10-12 more minutes. (WATCH POTATOES CAREFULLY TO ENSURE THAT THEY DO NOT BURN ON THE BOTTOM OF POT!) Liquid evaporates and becomes syrupy which results into candied yams. Potatoes should have a glaze on them. Transfer potatoes to serving dish. Pour any syrupy liquid over potatoes. Enjoy. Really??? Lol. I loved the way they were talking together and the things he was sayin to the camera. (Us). It was so funny, and really cute. And now I want candy Yams!
I love this. Three things especially 1. She says "Nutmeg" like my dear Mother, RIP she says "Nutneg." 2. If you didn't hear that water running when she got that lid, you wouldn't know our Culture. Our stuff can be as clean as a whistle, but we rinsing it out.🤣🤣❤❤❤❤ I love my People. 3. She tells him to "move back" she doesn't want to burn her son with the hot liquid as transfers the Candied Yams... a Mother's love❤❤❤, priceless.

D'Aundre Ryan OMG! I thought I was the only one who acknowledged that! I’m used to watching cooking videos where the cook talks directly to their audience! She’s gonna lose a lot o viewers if she doesn’t get him to be quiet!! I’m one of them. I can’t take his voice because it’s louder than hers! And he slows her up when he’s yapping and tripping her up on what she’s trying to say!! As if she needs him to help her talk! Just record please!
I have been cooking the yams just like she said those ppl cook them at the restaurant...now she has shown me the right way to cook them....thank you so much....never to old to learn something...
This recipe was EVERYTHING!!!!!! Grandma knew just what she was talking about. EVERYONE LOVED my yams for thanksgiving! Now I’m going to subscribe and use more of her recipes. 🥰 thank you!!!!
Today, while prepping to cook candy yams, I scanned thru TH-cam for candy yams recipes (just to view the different varieties & maybe try something new)=I noticed the kimono dress Grandma Gloria has on (my mom bought one just like it many years ago and I've had the pleasure of wearing it a few times when I stayed unexpectedly overnight with her*I couldn't find one to buy for myself); after reminiscing about the fond memories of dress, I watched Grandma Gloria's candy yams video = I mainly admired seeing her cook the yams to a roaring boil in the sugary liquid - which, thru trial & error, I had recently learned was a MUST do to establish a perfect candy glaze on the yams; like many others, first off I was annoyed by her son-in-law's constant banter*yet I realized it was his way of assisting her with much love & support😍; I greatly appreciate their time and efforts to share her recipe & cooking techniques🤩God Bless'em😇
OMG... I started with her sweet potato pie video and have been binge watching her since. I love how she explains why certain techniques are important for success.
He is helping her remember she has gotten older and she may forget so he is prompting her with cues. So his part is very intricate with him selling her, reminding her. Hes doing fine, listen to him, its called stand in prompting. Happens all the time like when people are acting, the other actir can say a word to get the person speaking to complete their line. Cause the audience becomes lost and she speaks with a southern black draw slang, but he helps her correct it... Im going to use these recipes this 2020. Thanks for cooking.
Exactly. He is helping her remember and explain step by step so that people are not wondering how many potatoes did she use, how much putter did she use, how long do you cook the potatoes for. She's older. If his commentary wasn't there, it would a cute video with some good looking food that people want to try to make but we would get stuck because key pieces are missing. Keep doing what you doing Bro. Have fun with Grandma. Wish I would have done this with my grandmother.
That is exactly what I thought he was doing. I ask questions to myself as this video was playing but with some of his repeats of what she was saying answered my questions. Some stuff he said was a little annoying at times but he got the point across.
My Mom passed and I never paid attention to her cooking sweet potatoes, but last year (2020) Grandma Gloria helped me make um JUST LIKE MAMA , or in my son's words "they taste just like Granny's"🙏🏽 Bless you, and thank you

I made em'! Thank you for sharing this recipe, they were a hit at Thanksgiving today. I cooked them last night, and they reheated beautifully. I had five small peeled sweet potatoes, butter, sugar, salt, water, vanilla and time. They were absolutely wonderful! Also I'm glad you mentioned how to cut them. I've been mashing my yams with brown sugar way too long. Again thanks.
I have just discovered Grandma Gloria and she is a TREASURE!! I love the careful instruction, wisdom and the banter between Mom and son. Her son is like one of mine!…. Very funny and informative!😃
OMG!! I haven't even finished watching the whole video yet but i had to stop and say I LOVE HER!! She reminds me so much of my mom who passed away in 2018. Thank you for this video ❤️
Grandma Gloria, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this recipe. It was delicious!!! And when grandma says 3 cups, you listen. I used about 2 cups and it wasn’t sweet at all. My house smelled so good and it went well with roast turkey. Love you grandma 😘
