I had this fear at the start. Fear of not being able to read back or not hearing correctly and having to ask for a repeat. Feeling a stupid. It was like a barrier. I kept listening to others in frequency to grasp the basic then tried it myself: wrote instructions down, it went all fine and basically I understood I was fearing something I should not fear. There’s nothing wrong in being a student learning. It’s only a matter of experience 😅
That was excellent instruction! You let the student take his time, think through it as many times as he needed to be ready, and he nailed it on the first try as a result. That's how you keep someone excited about flying and not feeling like they're dumb or struggling.
There were two times that my CFIs let me know I was ready to talk to ATC… 1) “How long have you been waiting to make that call?” 2) When I held my hand up to answer before the CFI could prompt me, and he said “the rest is yours”, and just sat back with a smile. That moment it clicks, in each stage of this journey we call aviation, is something we never forget.
This dude will be rewatching this on TH-cam a year from now and all he'll be able to think about is how he was paying for both the engine time and the CFI time as ATIS was looping through... Precious.
When I was learning radio calls, I would listen to your channel and every aviation channel I could find and pause the video, say what I thought was the correct call, then play the video to see if I was right. It was excellent practice because I could get immediate confirmation without being nervous about talking to ATC live
I'm an instrument rated private pilot and I still write out the script for my initial taxi clearance so I don't forget an item. It helps me get into the rhythm of ATC comm's, and getting off to a good start builds confidence for the rest of the flight.
Man, when I started my PPL journey, my instructor forced me to talk to the ATC, I was flying for a week. Next week he really made me feel guilty whenever I'm flying. Then I had enough and changed my instructor from my school. The new one is always teaching, patient, always asks questions and most importantly wants me to do good. After flying with him for 3 weeks I significantly improved my comms. He is so proud of me, I love this dude. If your instructor makes these mistakes, I think you should consider changing to another one. Because you are already paying thousands on your training:)
When I started flying again after a 25 year absence, talking on the radio was the hardest part to “re-learn”….yup, talkoffs, landings, stalls etc all cam back pretty quick…took a while to talk comfortably again on the radio…kudos to patient and positive instruction from Lewdix
I love it... Just remember, it's just another person on the other end of the radio! Just got my B,C,D endorsement so I'm fully aware how nerve racking talking to ATC can be
Ahh I remember those days! Great job Reggie! Like you said Lew, he needs to live, eat, breathe LiveATC until he can say what’s next before the pilot on the radio can. I also did a whole lot of simming with Pilotedge ATC. Those folks are great and let you practice with real people in the comfort of your home. Have a great weekend!
How I wish I got an instructor like you Lewis during the early times of my training! Radio calls were really a struggle for me and you made it look so cool and exciting! KUDOS MEN KEEP IT GOING!
Great topic! I'm only like 6 hours into flight training but I got the chance to talk last lesson and it was kinda' fun, ngl lol. Very simple things to start with so I never felt overwhelmed. And also, learning to fly might cost an arm and a leg, but holy **** is it ever fun! Ground school session tomorrow, then we head to the skies for another practical lesson! Best decision I have made in years.
this was fun to watch as a student struggling with radios too. thanks to the both of you for giving me confidence :) practice practice practice for us students!
I wish I could drop a picture here. My instructor gave me a really helpful sheet for atis/dep and it made all the difference. Love the video and the great atmosphere you provide while instructing keep it up!
I would love to see more Reggie content, he seems to have great situational awareness and your ability to make a student feel comfortable and confident is second to none! Great job Lew!
Great video these are great points. I really love the patients. My first instructor was not so patient. I struggled with my radio communications. My new instructor was amazing though he told me to imagine I am chatting with my buddy/friend and letting them know where I am and what I want to do. They will let you know where to go what what to do. I passed my PPL last month!
Lew. Another Mastertclass. Everything your student went through, I'm going through as well with my fliight training. The ATIS exercise and the noise cancelling headset issue opened my eyes.. You may have qualified this video as entertainment, but I found it wonderfully instructive. Many, many thanks
Thanks for doing this video. Before I went for flight training I would lissen to atc tower /ground at the airport where the flight school was and after awhile you got to know the controller and the airplanes that fly in and out. Very helpful.
Oh man, that's hilarious in the beginning... I was having flashbacks for sure. Go get 'em Reggie, you did awesome! I am doing instrument training right now, and I'm a little spooked about what's to come with IFR coms!!
I loved this video! Good to laugh along because I had my own first call with ATC this month and was equally terrified and confused 😂 Such a great feeling when you conquer it!
Instructors keep discussing the fear of talking to ATC, but no one's addressing the difficulty in understanding ATC because they speed talk well outside the recommended 100WPM.
My first flight, my instructor wanted me to call for clearance. When I went through my cheat sheet, my legs were shaking uncontrollably on the brakes. I couldn't do it. Took me the longest of all things flying to get the hang of
In Germany we have a separate madatory radio licence. And so we practice radio calls for ten hours or so. But nonetheless the first calls to atc are frightening
What is your base airport? I'm in Central Florida and starting to poke around for CFI's or even schools to start my private certificate. Love your vids! edit - just saw the diagram of KORL. Right down the road!
So, a funny thing happened the other day. I decided to re- watch the Agents of SHIELD and it dawned on me that LewDix is the voice of the saucy yet oddly brilliant Fitz. I've been through most of the episodes and Fitz has yet to say the thing. You know, "Remain clear of my propeller!" Damn these media conglomerates and their cancel culture hippie nonsense. I'm done with SHIELD until Fitz says the thing.
I can make out most of the ATIS, but I can't understand for the life of me what she's saying after "visual approach rwy 7 in use". I can't quite hear the bit about NOTAMs either; something something runways and taxiways, use caution for birds something something hold short instructions.
Sunglasses - Flying Eyes (10% off code: LEWDIX) Shirt - England 1992 away shirt Shorts - Under Armour Socks - Puma (Ankle length) Trainers - Adidas (cloud foam technology - very comfortable) Deodorant - Old Spice Wolfthorn Sun cream - Kiehl’s (can never be too careful when it comes to skin protection) Anything else you’d like to know, don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you! It’s about the student, not me. As long as it takes for them to get it is the amount of time we’ll spend working on it together!
Bring your students to the tower to visit. We like having visitors and it helps "humanize" the voices telling them what to do.😊

Yea man. It’s good to look back on how far you’ve come. From knowing nothing to being well versed. He’ll come back and see his start here… Priceless
That’s what I was thinking 🤣

Aha! I thought I am the only one who does that :) LiveATC also helped me a lot.

Mic fright is definitely a real thing. Great job !
Definitely!

Lewis, you are one hell of an instructor! Great job! Thanks for sharing!👏👏👏✈️
Thank you sir!

Thanks man!
Man, you are such a good example for current & aspiring CFI’s to follow. Well done!
I very much appreciate you saying that! Thank you!

Talking to ATC is literally my favorite part of lying
Don't lie when you're talking to ATC. Could be unsafe and definitely not nice.

Ah thank you so much mate! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
It's great to see Reggie is back after his discovery flight. Good job Reggie! Good job Lewis!
He’s loving training so far 🙌🏻

I like his energy and awareness. Good to see in a student pilot
that was awesome! Great job Reggie, keep on pushin!
What a great instructor! And a lucky student to have you
Thank you so much 🙌🏻
Ensuring headset clarity can make a world of difference! Excellent confidence building as always, Lewis 😎
Thank you, guys!
fantastic. it's all so new, and sometimes CFIs don't realize how foreign of a concept it is!
Instructors keep discussing the fear of talking to ATC, but no one's addressing the difficulty in understanding ATC because they speed talk well outside the recommended 100WPM.
LOL , i couldn't agree more!
Honestly watching all of your videos has helped me so much with radios!!
That’s great to hear!
@@LewDixAviation yes sir, and its paid off. I just got my PPL last week!
My first flight, my instructor wanted me to call for clearance. When I went through my cheat sheet, my legs were shaking uncontrollably on the brakes. I couldn't do it. Took me the longest of all things flying to get the hang of
It’s certainly intimidating at first!
Practice, practice, practice. Find one of those Live ATC channels to listen to. Like Teterboro ATC!
Looking forward to the next video. U make something intimidating less so. Thanks for showing this in a funny and entertaining way. 👍👌🙏
I try my best to make aviation less intimidating and more open. Glad you enjoy it!
Legend @LewDix Aviation. I still want a lesson when I come to Florida in March if able haha!!
Working at my local fbo and hearing the commas I’ve always wondered why pilots speak so fast. Slow down remember who, where, what, who
In Germany we have a separate madatory radio licence. And so we practice radio calls for ten hours or so. But nonetheless the first calls to atc are frightening
a fear I now have I didn't know I was going to worry about lol.
Great video 🇬🇧
I remember watching your vlogs when you upgraded to capt. I wanted to rewatch them but I cannot find them unfortunately 😢
I wish you were my instructor when i started flying!
🙌🏻
Great video.
Did you happen to delete a previous podcast video per chance Lew?
Crazy to think how long I've been watching you and you just so happen to operate out of the same airport I'm doing my ppl training at
Haha nice! Aviation is a small world.
Great job !!!
GREAT VIDEOS!
Thanks!
Excellent!
Valuable stuff!
🙌🏻
Thanks!
Thank you man!

edit - just saw the diagram of KORL. Right down the road!
Bring them up to the tower. Some of us enjoy giving tours and showing that we are just human. I'm at ocf.
I'd love to!
Yeah radio work is a problem when you have a stutter and you're doing it in a foreign language. So if I could do it - so can you :)
So, a funny thing happened the other day. I decided to re- watch the Agents of SHIELD and it dawned on me that LewDix is the voice of the saucy yet oddly brilliant Fitz. I've been through most of the episodes and Fitz has yet to say the thing. You know, "Remain clear of my propeller!"

I’ll see if I can get the script changed
Boy - do I have this problem - landing a plane is easy compared to ATC ( for me at least )
Boy am I glad I wasn’t the one who cut the ATIS that day 😂
😂 a lot of air time on that one
This may as well be learning to talk on a radio from a golf cart lol
Maybe you two can practice it without having to use engine time to save him money. He will get it though!
I'm scared of small planes like Cessna's ok in big jumbo jets, can you a video on overcoming fears of flying in small planes like Cessna's?
I can make out most of the ATIS, but I can't understand for the life of me what she's saying after "visual approach rwy 7 in use". I can't quite hear the bit about NOTAMs either; something something runways and taxiways, use caution for birds something something hold short instructions.
Cool sunglasses, what are they
happy window
Soon enough he will learn to speak conteoller 😂😅😂
Greetings tower,
