    Love the student’s attitude. He’s honest, admits when he’s afraid. He’s nervous, which means he knows the seriousness of flying, and he expressed trust in his CFI. All of that is a great declaration of the wonderful work of the CFI. It was a wonderful video because it highlights what lessons are all about. The CFI actually sharing the joy of the student’s learning. The whole thing reeks of the joy and passion, and challenge of aviation. Bravo, Well done!

      I’m an Aussie in the States, I want to transfer my FAA stuff to CASA so I can fly back home. Just need to figure out if it’s best to wait until I reach a certain milestone (like instrument, commercial etc) so I don’t need to do it all again. I would imagine using Moorabbin and Lilydale.

      @@alexs3187 I'd say get your CPL in the states, saves you doing 7 exams here for CASA, I think you'll just need to do a HF and conversion exam. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think you can log command time whilst doing instrument training here in Aus, and from what I've heard it's also cheaper in the states so might be best to get that box ticked over there too. I could be wrong about all that though. Also look forward to some of the hilarity that ensues at YMMB. Been more than one occasion where I've had to turn the engine off sitting in a traffic jam trying to get out.

    One thing I admire about you as an instructor is your students all seem to be having fun while also having a great deal of respect for you. Hopefully, when I'm instructing, I'll be able to build a similar dynamic with my students.

      I’m glad you recognize that. There’s a healthy balance that I like to keep of doing what we need to do to progress, but having fun while doing it! I really enjoy my instruction flights

      @Reganomics Lamborghini Time to find a new CFI. My first CFI liked to yell on final. I did eventually solo, but quit flying for a year, largely because I was too nervous on final. When I went back with a new CFI it made a world of difference.

    I didn't start to nail the landings until 11 hours in. Moving the eyes down the runway helped me big time. Props to all the CFI's that share their methods on TH-cam.

    I’m a CFI and still get a little airsick, have him try sea-bands. Works like a charm.

    Learning to land a plane is interesting. There are so many factors and forces to account for and adjust to. For most of us, I guess, it all initially made no sense whatsoever. Then after the magic number, which seems different for everyone, suddenly it all comes together - for most of the time :-) Like my favorite aviation saying goes: Flying is the second greatest thrill known. LANDING is the first!

    Love this. Your encouragement and enthusiasm really go a long way to make him feel more and more comfortable and confident. Also, I used to get terrible headaches when I first started flying. I used to come home drained and felt terrible after each lesson. The more and more I went up, the less and less it kept effecting me. So, yes, definitely keep at it. Learning to fly has been one of the most rewarding a challenging things I've ever done in life!

    Lew, i know this is OLD but thanks for this, i like the wind BUG as this is something i struggle with as i taxi, I'm always looking for the dam windsock. and my instructor is always asking where is the wind.. LOL so thanks! trying this friday

    I passed my instrument check ride two weeks ago and I still find myself watching instructional videos to keep myself in touch even though I’m not in a plane all the time. I love your videos and I go to Riddle so it would be so cool if I could come out and fly with you one day!!

    I got air sick when I first started training to, you get through it. I just did my spin flight a couple days ago for CFI initial and it was so much fun and I never imagine not getting sick

    My flight lesson before last I got air sickness. Did some research after I got home and the last flight lesson I took a ginger root capsule 1 hour before my lesson. Felt great the entire time.

    Today was my first time signing off a student to solo and man I was shitting myself but it went great! I definitely have a healthy and fun relationship with my students and that has come from what I’ve seen with you. We make great progress but also have fun and make fun of eachother.     Love these videos man. Nice to see someone else is dealing with some airsickness. I was suppose to have my check ride on the 19th but I have had some random episodes of airsickness about an hour into the check ride prep. I am thinking its my nerves and anxiety cause it has never occurred during any of my solos. Did your student try anything specific other than flying? Just curious. Thanks!

      One time I was holding short of the runway getting a takeoff clearance, I got these really long instructions and had to ask for the controller to repeat. Again, I was nervous and I didn't really pick it up. I asked my instructor if he had heard it right. He looked at me and smiled while saying "I'm not sure." The controller was not happy. He made sure to say it again REALLY SLOW. I got it right the third time lol. After that, I was on top of the radio.

    So I started flight training on Monday. I'm 5'2 so I need some sort of booster thing so I can see over the horizon. I'm keen to keep learning though. I feel like if your interested in one thing, your going to learn things quicker than you would with something your not so interested in.

      You don’t say what your flying but if it’s a 172 try a 152 or Cherokee. The later Cherokee also had a height adjustable seat. I am 5’5 and could never get comfortable in a 172. Also, they float....

    I’m not sure why but I find take offs harder then landing, because as you get faster you need to put less pressure on the pedals and the plane I’m training with is really sensitive so I go all over the place, I fly in a grob 115, pretty sure the England airforce uses it.

      Cool man. Landings are the most difficult part of what we do. They are not optional. Eventually you have to get the thing on the ground so learning landings can tough to grasp. Glad you’re getting it

    2:41 - "Roll some trim down". I haven't been flying in a while, but this one has always bugged me in hindsight. Are you rolling the trim wheel towards you or away from you while aircraft is descending for landing?
    If your hand was touching the wheel, and you moved it down, that would be towards you. I would think that pitches the nose up.
    Help me out!!

      Roll trim wheel toward the front of the plane forcing nose down on landing. Applying flaps kicks nose up so trim for speed. I have trim full forward on landings in PA28-181, hardly have to touch the yolk and holds 65 knots at about 1700 rpm full flaps with good decent rate.

    Hi Lewis, great videos and pertinent to what I am trying to achieve, i.e smoother landings. Can I ask if you use Carb Heat in your lessons, because my instructors are always using it when rpm goes below 2000rpm. Thanks.

      Thank you! It depends on what your aircraft POH says. In this PA28, carb heat is only used when you suspect carb icing. No need to use it for normal landings.

      @@LewDixAviation Thanks for your reply Lewis, and I see from reading comments on your other videos that I am not alone in wondering about Carb Heat. I am training in a C152 and perhaps carb icing is more likely in gravity fed fuel input than pump fed, as in low wing planes. Or maybe it’s just the design of the aircraft engine.
      Anyways, I wish I lived in Florida so I could come for some flight training at your school,especially the landings!

    Lew, I'm a student pilot in a Cherokee 140. Was surprised to see three notches of flaps with a crosswind like that. If you only used 2, would you have raised your speed higher than 65 kts on final?

      Hey Gipper! It’s the gusts that you would want to reduce flaps for, not a crosswind. I’m very gust my days I come in with 2 notches

      I had that problem too when I started! I never wanted to fly pitch down that close to the ground... didn't feel natural lol! Once I flew the proper pitch til just off the ground - things got better!

      @@AAVIATOR481 I have been the same. I flare too high! My Instructor eventually told me he won't let me slam us into the ground so "not yet" means keep descending and we'll be fine! 🤣😅😅🙂

      You have to use unpolarized sunglasses, that way you can see the screens properly. 👍
