    Not only is your content entertaining, it is also instructional. You won’t get all of the procedures, but you can certainly pickup nuggets of information that you can use in your own training. I’m a student pilot with less than a month till my check ride and I hear your voice saying control your airspeed when I’m in the pattern. It’s helped my landings tremendously. Your hard work in editing this content is paying off. Keep up the great work!

      I didn’t see you utilizing trim in the video. Once your on final and your stabilized use the trim to establish 65 and adjust the power to establish your decent rate. For the record I’m not a CFI but just a tip from a fellow aviator! Good flying sir👍

      ya know what I notice? lewdix doesn't ever tense up or reach for the yoke/rudder. that says something about how he gauged your skills. and lul both of you in a cessna, neither of you are cessna bois.
      11:15 nice save.
      16:10 it's hard to get the sight picture on those super-wide runways.

    Mike, one thing that I use to do with my students when I was instructing them and they had trouble with airspeed control, pitch and power would be to get them out into the practice area and have them set up with different airspeeds and or configurations up to slow flight. Then I would have them climb, descend, and turn while at the slow speeds so they really get true understanding and feel of the aircraft. (We are talking 15 to 30 minutes just punching through space at very slow speeds.) As the attitude of the A/C changes, as you have different configurations and speeds, you truly will understand the effect on the A/C. Then after that I would have them fly a pattern with correct speeds and configurations at altitude and they usually did a much better job at controlling the A/C speeds.
    Best of luck on your training ...

      This is what my instructor would do with me.... slow flight, maintain altitude, clean, 1st notch and 2nd notch flaps, and trim. Trim for SPEED, Throttle for Altitude. Trim the plane for the speed you want to maintain at a given throttle setting, so the controls are neutral. That will make landings a lot easier

    I always like how you say 1700 RPM abeam of the numbers and then trim for 80kt first notch flaps, then base 75kt second notch of flaps, then final 65kt third notch. Descent rate and airspeed then just comes naturally and your on the right profile. Then just a matter of slight trim for airspeed and throttle for altitude. Then it’s easier to concentrate on nailing the landing knowing your configured correctly. Keep up the great videos, learning so much.

    Thanks again for another excellent video. I got my LAPL two years ago but the last year has been frustrating with two long lockdowns here in the UK and as they say, flying is a perishable skill. What you give us is a great combination of entertainment (British sense of humour :-) and really useful hands on demos on the key aspects of flying - 'warts and all' (which really helps). This particular video was superb and I found myself watching the airspeed and threshold constantly during the landings as if I was in the plane.

    A big tip here that I got from my CFI was pitch for airspeed power for altitude when in landing configuration. Pitch for landing speed which is usually 65kt power setting usually about 2100 RPM adjust accordingly using the first rule to stay in glide path..

    As mentioned before, these are great because they show learning from where the student is at, not where the instructor is at. Watching a CFI do perfect landings doesn't show the how to get from bad landings to good landings part. "Entertainment purposes only" = Keeping opportunistic student pilots safe from opportunistic trial lawyers.

    Michael, not an amazing CFI like Lew but what helped me with airspeed management was power off approach’s. It really helps you understand the particular plane’s characteristics as you transition to other aircraft. Remember, you can always slip to lose altitude as well.

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff, Lew... he's at 40 hours, not sure if he's solo'd yet but doing 30 to 45 minutes of pattern work, 3 or 4 times after he solo's, should tighten up his throttle control and airspeed. Every day, every airport is different.... you keep on learning with every new experience, even after you get your PPL. 62 hours, in my RV-12, getting close to my check ride.

    I agree with Mike. I take away something from every video. In this case it is speed. If I am not at 80kts and flaps 10 on the downwind I am going to then try and correct it on base but now I am suppose to be 75kts flaps 20 but I am too fast. Then I turn to final and I am trying to get to 65kts full flaps the whole time trying to slow because I didn’t have it right on downwind. My best landings came with the speeds correct in the pattern

      I had a discovery flight yesterday and afterwards went for some breakfast. As I reached into my pocket I realized I had an extra set of airplane keys. The CFI was shocked but we had a good chuckle when I went back an hour after my flight dangling the keys into the office. I expect he heard about that one and I admit I thought for a moment I should have remembered the key code to the airfield. 😎

Also...I know this isn't 'Standard' but I used to land using the 'short runway' procedure just to prove to myself I could touchdown smoothly, at like 55 knots. Lots of power and nose up and you land like a helicopter. Maybe his next visit to Florida will be on his 'Long Cross Country'...it's just under 200 miles as the Warrior flies.
