    I’m so sorry bro, 7 yrs ago I had a similar crash & fractured my L1 vertebrae, luckily I didn’t need surgery & it healed to a point. Still have constant pain but am able to ride after 1 yr off the bikes. I now ride cross country type rides & keep my body as strong as possible at 60 yrs old. I hope you recover, praying for you!

      Thank you for the prayers. Chronic pain is a monster. I'm sorry you too understand, but it's great you are finding a way to deal. I’m 57 yrs old and ride all black trails locally as well as downhill in Ga/Tn/NC and if people DONT laugh at me then I feel like I’m not wearing enough. I believe in the saying “You don’t stop riding because you get old, you get old because you stop riding” but I also know I don’t bounce and mend like I used to!

    • @patrickspapens5497
      @patrickspapens5497 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      my man, no amount of safety gear will ever be enough when it comes to preventing injuries. let them laugh, you'll be the last to laugh when others realise they should've used safety gear too

    • @mmiisshhaa
      @mmiisshhaa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yah, if you're a beginning gear is good but once you're good enough at crashing and once you're doing stuff crazy enough, gear doesn't really protect you anymore. It'll stop a couple scratches MAYBE if it stays on, but that's it. I can pretty easily do every trail in whistler, and while I wear the normal helmet, gloves, elbow pads and body armour under a jersey, I think if I really were to have a bad crash it wouldn't really protect me(except for helmet, I find even road biking sketchy without a helmet). But even still, I've never had any broken bones or any serious injuries, so maybe my gear is protecting me.

    • @RiggadonDan
      @RiggadonDan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@mmiisshhaa How can you say that gear doesn't really protect you in a crash when you're good enough? Have you heard of a neck brace, the thing specifically designed to prevent cervical spine injuries? The gear is there to protect you when you DON'T have control, that rare moment when your skills aren't enough to save you. Crashing is definitely a learned skill and can prevent serious injuries, but to say that gear doesn't really protect you when you're good enough is crazy. You even admit to never having had a serious injury from a crash, so count yourself lucky. I used to think the way you do, but you don't truly value your health until you lose it... I had a T12 vertebrae fracture so I'm speaking from experience. Luckily I can still ride, but many others can't say the same. Everyone thinks they're invincible, until they face the consequences of their actions...

    • @mmiisshhaa
      @mmiisshhaa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RiggadonDan I was told by a store owner that neck braces are honestly more likely to break your bone in a crash that wouldn't have injured you, than they are to save your neck in an actually important crash. But I don't know, even though I wear protection, the only ones I really find helpful are chest plate and helmet and gloves. Everything else just kinda slides of in a crash and doesn't protect from scratches. And I don't really see how a relatively thin price of cloth and foam would stop your bone from being broken. I might have above average bone strength though. I weigh more than I probably should for the way I look.

    Wow, this is sobering. You looked like you were having fun too. Hope you're doing much better these days. I've just gotten into the MTB scene. This kind of accident frightens me, but I'm trying my best to stay protected as I take my risks. Full face POC Otocon helmet, POC Air v2 knee pads, gloves, etc. Hoping to get elbow pads and chest armor for downhill riding, but I don't know that any of it would prevent something like this from happening with a similar wreck. I'm just hoping it would, and praying that a serious crash doesn't occur when I ride or push my limit.

      @@skippylegrandgourou2069So true, I’ve been riding MTB’s since the 80’s, yes I’m geriatric yet still ride descent runs 30- 40 miles. Back then there were not as many places to ride, you had to seek them out yourself not knowing if the next turn is a 50’ drop down a canyon. I’d ride the cross country ski trails in the Massachusetts mountains during spring and summer. Often alone,your really hyper-focused when 5 miles up a mountain taking nothing for granted. The peace and quiet the beauty of the trees radiating newly created oxygen to breath in while riding is truly what keeps me riding at nearly 70 yrs old. The bike parks today sometimes cause a lack of focus as everyone is watching everyone else and fail connect w their natural surroundings and beauty. I’m not a geezer I just love the feeling of riding and pushing myself beyond my yearly age whenever possible! When you can get back on your time machine and ride, just for yourself in your own way. Peace brother.

    Im so sorry that this happened to you. 3 years ago, I had nasty crash with concussion. I went over the bars and then I woke in bushes some 200 meters bellow the trail. I could die then easily but not one bone was broken. I felt little tingling in my left hand fingers. So about year and a half later my left hand was really weakened, I had pain in my shoulders … mri showed spinal stenosis in neck also. Herniated disc and some protrusions. Now, 2 years later i am relatively good. No pain, strength came back almost completely but I have issues with my neck spine now. I thought i would need surgery but luckily I’m managing ok. I do stretching in the morning, walk a lot … i dont ride as i used to. No enduro or extensive trail riding anymore. I hope that someday, I would be able to shred trails again as I was in love with mtb. Still having my bike 😀. Didn’t have heart to sell it. I ride a little but nothing serious. You dont even need to crash. I have huge knee and lower back problems as soon as I started riding black trails on a downhill rig. The amount of force transferes to the knees can hurt them even without any crash.

    • @wild_trail_flow
      @wild_trail_flow 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carpedownhillem That's not normal, especially if you haven't had any major joint injuries in the past. I was in a similar position as you. In my late twenties I started to develop knee pain and knuckle pain out of nowhere. It got so bad that for around 2 - 3 years I had to completely stop MTBing and dong lower body exercises. My knees would have a constantly inflamed synovial lining. Even walking a few flights of stairs would irritate them. I visited a number of doctors in 3 different countries and didn't get any answers. By educating myself and through self-experimentation I finally figured out that my body has issues with histamine tolerance. These days I'm following a low histamine diet and my joints feel great. I can mountain bike and ride enduro motorcycles for hours in the mountains without any issues. There must be a reason why you are experiencing joint issues - maybe it's something similar to what I had or maybe you simply have joint mobility issues. In any case, it's worth digging deeper and trying to solve the underlying problem.

  • @geekane9462

    Oh my goodness brother. Terrifying to say the least. After trauma the spinal cord has swelling. As that swelling reduces the sensation of deep touch is usually first to return then light touch, followed by motor (muscle) return.
    Spinal stenosis is often progressive as we age. With rapid, high-impact sports like mountain biking and motocross where our bodies are more subject to these forces repeatedly the vertebrae can hit each other. Think of a hammer used over the years hitting a hard surface. Over time that hammer head becomes mushroomed out with spurs. On our vertebrae these spurs project into our spinal canal causing a more narrow space. The impacts can also cause our spinal discs to bulge and herniate. This is spinal stenosis.
    So with a narrow canal there is less space for the spinal cord. Under a sudden jarring impact the spinal cord contacts these vertebral bony spurs thus damaging or shocking the spinal cord.
    I have severe stenosis from 30 years of high-impact mountain biking and riding with a hyper-extended neck (head backward) on steep descents. In this extreme position the vertebral bodies are very close together. Neck hyperextension with rapid impacts on the vertebrae increases the risk of bony spurs. Again the hammer head mushrooming effect.
    To reduce the risk of vertebral impacts stretch your back and spine and improve posture by flexing your whole spine not just your neck, especially on steep descents.
    In your case hopefully you will see sensory and motor returns to normal. We’re praying 🙏 for you brother.

    Wow.. Did you fall down in really bad angle or something? It doesn't look that bad on camera, also the speed doesn't look that high. I'm just wondering how? How come some people crashed in super high speed or from really big jumps but they just walked out from the crash like hey nothing happened and then some people just fall down on small jumps or curbside and break their neck. I mean you never know what could happen it's crazy

    • @RALEIGHthe3RD
      @RALEIGHthe3RD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, was definitely not my "worst" crash at all. I had a preexisting narrowing of my spinal canal which was the root cause. As for the crash, my bike washed out from under me, so it didn't absorb any of the impact, and sent me head first through the air. My forehead hit first, and my feet and knees went above my head, causing hyper extension of my spine (arched backwards really far).

    • @RALEIGHthe3RD
