  • This is Wanda. She's an R-body New Yorker from 1979 - which means she's kinda rare; especially in this shape and with the options she has.
This is not meant to be serious. I'm just trying to have some fun and figure out how to edit audio/video on my Mac.
Bonus pop-culture points to anyone who can name the song, band, and year of release for the background song. No cheating with the Google-nets, either.

I am DROOLING!! My parents had a '79 as well. These cars had more class in one ashtray than every modern car combined. These were works of art.

My dad bought this in 1979. Came with wire wheels and super wide white walls. Was borrowed for weddings quite a few times.

I remember as a kid when these cars were 5 to 10 years old and they were always so rusty in Ontario, Canada. Never was old enough to appreciate a nice car. I always liked the looks and those pluch seats. These cars are now very hard to find....but thankfully yours is in beautiful shape.

I literally grew up in one of these. same color and year as this with original spoke wheels. My father literally kept it till the doors wouldn't close anymore from rust. got rid of in back in 97 and ive missed it ever since. Especially the smell. She had an old car smell like no other. Now we have a mint condition 94 lhs.

Back in the day, my Dad traded cars every year. He had Cordova's until 1980 and he bought a New Yorker Brougham, metallic Black with Ivory leather interior, fully loaded, save for a moon roof. Great sounding stereo with Dolby noise reduction on the cassette and auto reverse. He just LOVED that car, and drove it until it basically fell apart. I remember the day he brought it home. It had, like, 12 miles on it and had that
beautiful "new car smell". I really like your '79, especially since it's a 2 tone paint. Why don't we have 2 tone cars anymore? They were really classy. Great car & great video.

I really love these R-Body cars made by Chrysler. It's a shame that you don't see too many of these anymore. 1979 was the year that Chrysler went almost out of business due to bankruptcy and that's when Lee Iacocca came along and served as President and CEO of Chrysler after being fired from Ford on July 13, 1978 after nearly 32 years of working for Ford.

The ones with the 360 V8 are rarer; that engine was discontinued for 1981, leaving just the Slant Six and the 318 V8.

WOW, very nice and thank you again for that emblem from the trunk. Unfortunately i haven;t finished my New Yorker, it's in the garage now and i hope this year it will be ready to cruise the streets. You're so lucky to be born in the USA, do not forget this even in your hardest moments. Thank you very much for posting this video, i miss my NY-er a lot. I miss the trips in the NY-er, no matter how long the trip was, the longer it was the more i wanted to drive her :)
Enjoy it and god bless you.

I just found and bought a '79..not a Fifth Ave. model but very nice with button tuft leather seats and 360 V-8..I tossed the 2 bbl carb and stock intake and had my mechanic install an Edelbrock 4 bbl and performance intake and duel exhaust with flowmasters..sounds wonderful! This is a car from Ark. and has 64,005 miles on her!The paint (brown) had faded from sitting out side but I know a guy that did a wonderful job of bringing her back inside and out..NO rust on this car ever! Going to be my everyday summer driver!By the way..I named her "Doris"...

If memory serves, this is the Champagne edition based on the two-tone paint scheme. Very nice piece of history here. I remember seeing one of these in a dealership in '79 and it suffered from so much of what almost bankrupted Chrysler - lousy quality. The seat tracks were loose on the driver's side and so many other clear examples of a bunch of assembly line workers who literally had zero interest in giving a darn.
I love these cars, though. Very nice and thank you for sharing. Good job on the video, too!

I saw one of these for the first time exactly the same, sunroof and all in 1979 right after a July 4th fireworks show in Massachusetts. My dad had to drag me away from it, the family was getting in and the lights were coming on, the sunroof was opening, the headlight doors where opening - I've been in love with this bodystyle ever since. A full sized car would be a refreshing change for the tiny little cars shoved on us by the big 3. Congrats on your Beautiful car....AWESOME!!!

I owned a 79 New Yorker in the same color. A real beauty! Dealer begged me to buy it so he could get allocated more small cars to unload (Sapporo?), due to the gas crisis. I think the deal from the factory was “sell a New Yorker and get 3 more Sapporos” allocated. Unfortunately, the car I had was an absolute lemon. I replaced the transmission at 11,500 miles and again at 48,500. It was a very comfortable, prestigious car. Sorry I could not keep it, but the roof leaked too.

I had a 80 5th ave loaded, it was a great car, it went 230,000 miles on it before I gave up. It didn't die, just wasn't worth spending any money on it any more. it need brakes, all new exhaust, an new windshield, the air didn't work. etc. it was 15 years old. lived it's life in Wisconsin (think salt), amazingly it wasn't all that rusted out. but the rust was on it's way. 360 with small port 318 intake and 2bbl carb, 2.45 gears. Top speed? you would be surprised waht it would do on a cool morni

Funny you should mention that. Since I filmed this, I ditched the ESC and added an orange-box electronic ignition system. The car came from the factory with a Thermoquad carb - so there's no need to go bigger. I also got rid of the smog pump and all the smog gear/wiring. That, along with the dual exhaust, means this car breathes like a champ and runs great. :)

The 1979 energy crisis and the recession that followed the next year were a big factor. Sales of these were also not very hot due to lingering memories over the previous C-bodies, which came out in the wake of the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, so we know very well those weren't hot sellers because they were so darned large.

@TheCLPVideos I'm one of those Chrysler faithful! That IS one gorgeous Automobile!! My neighbor bought one, only his was a 1980, but it was almost identical to this one. My chin dropped when I saw him get out of his. Two days after he bought his New Yorker, he gave it to his wife because she kept after him. So he went out and bought a 1980 Imperial Frank Sinatra edition. They were the two nicest cars on the block. I loved and still do love Chrysler... and i get a lot of flack about it. but hey

There was an 81 version of the New Yorker Fifth Ave in tu-tone Mahogany that was stunning. Too bad they weren't better built and better sellers.

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

IstvanN1961 Yes I in know that color combination. In 1981 there were 3 tu-tone color choices and 1 solid color for the Fifth Ave. The rarest is actually the one solid color, Midnight blue metallic. But my favorite was the tu-tone mahogany color treatment as well. In 1979 if you u ordered the New Yorker Fifth Ave you only had this tu-tone color treatment of cream over beige. Interior color was champagne. I should know I owned one.

ya, they use salt by the massive amounts In Wisconsin, esp back in the 70's and 80's. it's posible that they cut down on salt now. I didn't know that LaCrosse used cinder.
    note I owned a 79 dodge St Regis (360 2bbl) and 79 Newport (318) also.
The 360 in the 79 Dodge had the big port intake and the Bigger 2 BBl carb.
My 80 Chrysler also had different heat riser valve on the exhaust Manifold, it was vacum controled.

    Hi,
Get rid of the lean burn spark control computer and small carb
Mopar electronic ignition conversion comes with new wire /distributer,or go to the junk yard and find an old van/truck/car with no smog from the factory,or one converted already and change ecu/distributer,carb with a non smog 2bbl (or 4bbl if a 4bbl car) and the car will run smoother, start easier ,better mpg and the fun part this car will fly ! The engine will sound different under full excelleration and it will be powerful !

Not much, truthfully. It's the best - and worst - thing about these cars. If you find one in AMAZING condition (a 2+, or 1-) it'll be worth, at most, $5K. Maybe $6K if it's super low miles. And prices just go down from there.

attkrlufy The two rarest options are the power sunroof and the steel wheels. They had a more expensive aluminum wheel option with trim rings your car doesnt have but you do have an optional wheel. Pretty much everything else on the Fifth Ave that year was standard. Cant tell in the video whether you have the optional 4 bbl carb on the 360. Another rare option.

Comparable to a cadillac of the day. I see Chrysler kept that awful ugly slanted 70s dash on into the K cars & later acclaim/spirit. I guess they finally did a real redesign when they made the breeze-stratus 20+ yrs later! Shame on em.
