Growing up in Leicestershire (we moved up there for my Dad's job), the GCR has always had a special place in my heart. My best friend at the time had a section of former GCR embankment as part of his expansive back garden.

Another great array of train videos. I have never been to the Great Central Railway on a gala day. Might have to visit one for the day.

It's the closest my generation and below will get to how it was, with steam trains passing on the mainline.

Fantastic little film! I have always liked the Great Central Railway, and because of that, in 2006, I joined the railway as a volunteer in the Permanent Way department, and I have never looked back. Actually, one thing the Permanent Way Department really really needs is more volunteers because the railway hasn't been actively trying to recruit any in the last few years and make the public aware that they can try and join our team on a volunteer basis.

I grew up in Thurcaston and It was great growing up next to the railway, I'm only 22 so Im lucky to have always seen it as a heritage railway, my dad however also grew up there and he remembers playing on the line in the 60s when it was abandoned! side note he also used to farm those fields you were standing in

Great video! I think I was there when you where at Charnwood Water. It's always good to have a deep dive into a Great Central timetable to mark off anything facing the wrong way. This means you can move locations when trains are facing the wrong way so you don't miss the ones facing the right way. For this years gala the two 'Standard 2s', the 'Standard 5' and the two guests are all facing south whilst the '9F' is facing north. But the '8F' could be either way!

Nice to see an 8F out and about, I love the way they look, and on a proper coal train too. I am always on the lookout for updates on the GCR 8K (63061, LNER O4) on her restoration, last I saw the boiler was out of the frames.

Super video Lawrie. Some fab shots. I do enjoy seeing it when they get the goods wagons out. Gives you a great feel of what it would have been like back then. Really enjoyed the passing goods and passenger train shot.

Do love the rakes they put together at the GCR. Still not seen the full van rake in action though. Unfortunately I was on nights during the steam gala so couldn't go.

Really enjoyable video, some great locations. The locos and stock just need a little weathering though 😂

To make it easier to run round and return in the other direction.
If you only had one it would have to be taken to the back of the train for each run

Lovely video as always, but could I make a suggestion please? Could you leave the background music off when showing tracking shots of trains please? I'd much prefer to hear all the hissing, puffing, clanking and clickety-clacking 😁

    • @lmm

If you read the video description it'll explain why the music is there - you wouldn't hear the sounds you wanted regardless sadly
