A Sunday in Hell (1976)

  • The film follows the French Paris-Roubaix spring classic, notorious for the hellish paves or cobbled roads of the north "which are no longer used for traffic but only for transporting cattle - and for cycle races". We are there from the dawn preparations and rituals on the outskirts of Paris and through the rigours of the race with special focus on a number of prominent cyclists to the final outcome on the Roubaix cycle track - followed by the filthy riders taking their showers. There is also an eye for life among the spectators and the media event as such. The film alternates among different kinds of shot with a view to establishing the most suitable view of the narrative: shots from motorcycles, which are able to convey the motion of the race and provide close ups of the riders in the style of television cycle race reporting; fixed cameras stationed at strategically important points along the route, where viewers can watch riders passing in real time and thus gain a clear overview of the distance between the leaders and the main field: and the Olympian eye of the helicopter shots.

From the most passionate cykling fan and journalist of all time, the unforgettably Jørgen leth, which later became one of the most famous commentator of cykling. At least, he is a legende in DK, and far beyond. He has a way to think and see a race, like no others.
He kind of tells it as it plays out, in a very delight and passionated way, like reading up from a great novel or poem.
He´s just like that in real life too. No compromises, and a deep love for the beauty of races.
    Peace and love from Denmark

This film was created by the famous Danish cycling enthusiast, writer and film maker Jørgen Leth. He is an extraordinary person and film maker. Notably two of his films are for cycling fans (or film fans in general). A Sunday In Hell and Stars And Water Carriers. Both films are true gems. Btw Jørgen Leth is now 86 years old. He lives in Copenhagen and is doing well.

A Wagnerian choir singing L'enfer du Nord - how cool is that!! Great film - it totally captures the epic, biblical atmosphere of the race. I had a taste of this stuff in 1977 when I spent the spring and early summer racing in Flanders. I stayed at Mrs Deene's place in Zomergem - my room mate had a box of needles, glass ampules and pills. I managed to keep my hands out of the pharmaceutical cookie jar and got my ass kicked in most of the races. Apart from that I had a wonderful time!!...L'enfer du Nord!! Thanks for the download Fixie!!

Question: In the late 70s up to the late 80s did most riders use 32 or 36 spokes? Straight gauge or double butted? 2x or 3x spoke pattern? I would like to know!

Those were the Days...Most heroic cycling race in the world... All our heroes in this great, epic movie... I was 6 in 1976 but i still honour those Heroes... As a Belgian it was easy...We could pick them out. Eddy Merckx, Roger De Vlaeminck, Freddy Maertens, Walter Godefroot... And Marc Demeyere, the underdog, who wins at the velodrome in Roubaix in 1976... What a great documentary ! That makes Paris-Roubaix o so special and heroic... We all hope that another Belgian will win on Sunday. Wout van Aert would fit as a modest Flemish Paris-Roubaix-winner... But an underdog is also ok...Long live cycling !

By the time this film was released I had ridden all through Europe and traversed the Moroccan Sahara on 1960s Cinelli racing frame. Nigelnightmare - not so much. Merckx was in a very serious accident earlier in his career with a motorbike. If I remember correctly he injured his spine. He has stated often that upon returning, despite being very successful, he was never comfortable on the bike, never pain free. He was always fastidious, but post accident it was a search for something that didn’t exist for him anymore.

Wiggo should have rode this edition, the hair and sideburns are very appropriate for this era!

if only we could have seen this so readilly back in the day apart from a
snippet of continental races when i as a mad keen amateur ,the odd
ten or 15 minutes on world of sport was relished, i would have been
left goggle eyed by this amazing spectacle,

Most of that dust and dirt on the cyclists probably came of the vehicles! It must be dreadful with all the diesel fumes. Yuck!!!
    Overall, great documentary!

The build up and detail is great... Samson team discussed majority of tactics in front of camera. Maybe Netflix could learn a thing or too today? Steak and rice for breakfast, non of your sports nutrition going on here. Merckx bike, that has to be a 140mm stem and probably a 56mm or longer top tube, flat back and super aero. 🤔
